TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY CROSSROADS ARTS INCUBATOR SHUT DOWN OVER SAFETY ISSUES!!!

Just got a quick note from AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS regarding The Arts Incubator . . . "Heard it has been shut down for improper permitting/fire codes . . ."

Called the number . . . Check the message:

"The Arts Incubator of Kansas City is closed until June 23rd and staff is currently on furlough. Following an inspection and structural engineers report The Kansas City Fire Marshall has decreed that no assembly events shall be allowed to take place in the structure at 115 w. 18th St which is the building that the Arts Incubator of KC leases for its nonprofit organization. To insure the safety of all resident artists, staff and visitors to the building, the arts incubator will close for two weeks.

During this time The Arts incubator and the building owner are working diligently to address safety issues. The Arts Incubator anticipates reopening when these building concerns have been corrected. Thank you."

To wit . . .

COUNT THIS AS ANOTHER SERIOUS FAIL FOR THE KANSAS CITY'S ART SCENE!!!

Sadly, most local artists are more skilled at causal drug use than staying on top of business . . . While the Arts Incubator was one of the more impressive local organizations . . . It's hard to rise above so much local arts mediocrity.

Here's hoping they get their old and busted building together quickly for the benefit of so many d-bags stuck in a small market.

DEVELOPING . . .

  2. Oh yes, it was awesome receiving the email about this today, considering my wedding was scheduled to take place in this building.

Seeking out a new facility on extremely short notice is going to be so much fun.

Can I has my money back now?

  3. <While the Arts Incubator was one of the more impressive local organizations<

Yeah, impressive in turning a profit via a non profit Arts organization.

I'm curious how running a for profit event space fits in with their mission statement.

The building is owned by Ehinger anyway.

  4. Why don't they move their studios across the street and set them up on the sidewalk in front of YJs?

  6. TKC, blogger and anonymous commenters as pointlessly mean-spirited as ever.

  7. They need to huff and whine and stomp their feet that the rules should not apply to them as they are far too important and make way too large an economic, social and aesthetic impact and bring too much positive press to KC to have to follow some silly rules designed to benefit or protect the public interests.

Shouldn't all artists be free to appropriate private space (or for that matter public space) however they want?

And to act and do whatever they see fit in the name of artistic expression?

After all, they are the creative class, you know.

Not corporate schmucks, government mules or working stiffs, like you and me.

  8. Fat Boy, has anyone said any of these things?

I'm not an artist myself, but I don't really understand the resentment of artists on this blog. How does it affect you?

We don't even know the specifics of this yet. From the statement, it sounds like they are going address any safety issues and move on.

  9. "I don't really understand the resentment of artists on this blog."

Then you obviously have never dealt with artists.

  10. So the artists are annoying?

There are annoying business people, bureaucrats, etc. I don't think artists have a monopoly on being irritating.

  11. April, I suggest you read the Facebook comments of the Save the YJs crowd to get a little insight.

  12. Somebody has some time to kill, so I read that post and the comments. I don't know anything about that situation other than what's on the post. Sounds like they were unhappy about having to comply with regulations, which is probably just too bad for them. I don't think anyone can have a 1-5am sidewalk license, so they probably shouldn't have one. There are also occupancy limits. So too bad. I think Grinder's is regulated differently because it's a venue and is so much larger. I could be wrong about that, though.

Doesn't seem to be the same case here with the Arts Incubator, at least so far.

I worked in the Crossroads for several years. It's been interesting how for so long the city did not care whatsoever went on down there, especially when it came to crime. I remember once waiting 20 minutes for police to arrive when we called 911 about a man threatening our employees in a side parking lot with a knife (he obviously was mentally ill). Now that the neighborhood is changing and becoming safer and more hip, suddenly these regulations matter and it's easier to get the city to notice when something's not quite up to someone's liking. For people that have been there since you needed bars on all of your windows, that's quite a change.

The hipsters you all dislike so much will head down to the West Bottoms, those that haven't already. You will be safe.

  13. This happened the same night (First Friday) as the farce with YJ's. Your tipsters aren't exactly on top of their game, Tee!

  14. The Star should get around to it next month.

  15. April, good to see you got the point.

And you're right, the Arts Incubator folks aren't complaining like the whiners at YJ's.

    Which is the point.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't think I understand. So everyone at YJ's is a whiny artist and the point is the Arts Incubator people aren't whining?

  21. A competitor from oh, about 10th and Broadway, called the fire marshalls on Arts Incubator. He may be under additional scrutiny soon, hisself.

  22. Regardless of who tipped the fire marshal, the Arts Incubator handled the situation poorly and unprofessionally. I had reserved the Event Loft for my wedding on June 5th. I was called on Friday, June 3rd at 5 PM and notified that they were closed by the fire marshal. They gave a list of a few places for us to call to see if (in less than 2 days) there was availability. They provided no information on how they would pay us back the money we had put down to reserve the space. We were left at 5 PM on a Friday to try and find a new location for our ceremony and reception. Luckily, we found a space even better than the Event Loft and the new space was very accommodating and willing to help us out, given our unfortunate situation. We have still not received our money back from Arts Incubator. I absolutely do not recommend them as an event space or as a non-profit organization. Their business practice is shoddy and unprofessional.

  23. The person running the organization and the Board is at fault. Artists were paying renters and working hard to further their skills and careers, and were not decision makers at the Incubator. The Event Space was in control by the E.D and the Board, not the artists. Its too bad because the artists and their causes are now lumped into the effects from poor business management by the leaders of the Organization.

  24. So I know that the management operated other properties in the crossroads district that also operated the inc. and they would not permit fundraisers on those properties, they called them parties, and supressed any kind of options to raise funding, and now learn the the very same property mgr. did not have proper permits or safty issues break his own rules what goes around comes around and the artist suffer
