Thankfully, The Insipid Sporting KC/Ochocinco Publicity Stunt Is Nearly Complete!!!

For better or worse, a great many people working within the ranks of Kansas City professional sports are taking their cues from Dancing With The Stars.

To be fair, I wouldn't know how to begin the attempt to get people interested in soccer. Still, the latest publicity stunt is almost over:

Sporting KC Nears Decision On Ochocinco

Why was this stunt dangerous? Sure, there was a great deal of TV time for the team and for a pro-athlete who likes flaunting his ignorance. Still . . .

THE WORST THING ABOUT THE SPORTING KC/OCHOCINCO PR MOVE IS THAT IT REVEALS THAT A GREAT DEAL OF THE NEWS IS MOSTLY FAKE!!!

The "tryout" was calculated, staged and now it's almost over . . . Thing is, an aspect of sports reporting that only a few dedicated newsies like Jake Harry even try to tackle is the vast amounts of money that municipalities invest into these games. In a stagnant global economy, maybe the people of KCK should have been told that their economic fortunes are dependent on a sideshow. That didn't happen. Instead, local media celebrated a co-marketing campaign that included a lot of smiles and more interest from reporters than fans.

  1. The news isn't fake, Tee. It's just PR, advertising, and persnoalities tricking lazy journalists and fake journalists like bloggers to feed their stuff to the public for free.
Kind of like KCPD dog-and-pony shows or political campaigns.
The problem is, more people all the time really can't tell the difference between reality and what's produced out of thin air.
That's why the e-tax will win.

  2. You're starting to sound like Funky, Tee.

Next thing you know you'll be dissin' the annual $2M stadium contribution from KCMO.

  3. Sports are entertainment. There's nothing wrong with what is being done.
