Bannister Mall Site Still A Bust

Soccer and new jobs from Cerner bailed on South Kansas City . . . All that's left is vague luncheon talk and pre-election promises regarding another spot in Kansas City that looks like the lunar landing landscape.

  1. Owen Buckley made a bad investment and now he wants the City to pay for his bailout.

The City already paid for the demolition of the buildings and gave him every tax break possible.

  2. Why is John Sharp trying to bring liquor stores to Blue Ridge Blvd? The perception and reality of the Bannister area as a low-class, crime plagued slum can only get worse.

  3. Why doesn't John Sharp try to spend some time actually doing some public policy work on city services instead of making believe he's a developer and constantly get his butt handed to him at the taxpayers' expense?
    What a buffoon!!

  4. Owen Buckley thinks this is a public/private partnership. I'm not sure the community agrees with him. He needs to get the eyesore cleaned up before the community turns on him.

  5. I cannot believe John Sharp thinks more liquor is the key to economic development. How many times have we heard about the perception of the area around Bannister Mall? Now he wants it to be easier for more businesses to sell liquor. This is a prime example of just how provincial his thinking is.

  6. Owen Buckley is a Flim Flam Man, who only people as stupid as our current City Council would even give the time of day to. This project will never happen, and all of OB's efforts will be focused on getting the City to bail him out. The Wizards are gone!!!!!

  7. If, as John Sharp claims, it is truly "Our Turn" in the Sixth District then lets get something more positive for our beleaguered neighborhoods than booze. If you want retail development we first have to have the kind of neighborhood demographics that retail tenants want. Taxpayer funded marginal development is already taking its toll in the Power and Light District. What Bannister needs is a vibrant school district, city services and infrastructure improvements that will attract families with disposable income. Its time to put our neighborhoods first!

  8. If anyone from the sixth district is reading this, please elect Terrence Nash!! He is the only person who will truly stay focused on the sixth district, which is what the in district council person is supposed to do!!

  9. The story is wrong, the Wizards announced their decision just a year ago. Not Three!

Apparently Terrance Nash is a retail real estate specialist now. What an idiot!

The problem is the community wants this redevelopment to fix every problem they have i.e. schools, crime, crappy parents, etc. It won't!

They should be thankful for Buckley, because no one else would consistently pander to them. Large retail businesses will come to the area because of him, but all neighborhood activists want to do is form coalitions and have meetings to raise hell that result in nothing instead of turn the focus towards themselves.

  10. Nash correctly pointed out that we have 4 Oak Park malls' worth of vacant retail, quoting Kevin Collison of the KC Star.

Lou Austin, chair of the Three Trails CID, even 5 years ago found out that the Bannister Mall area could only support a tiny fraction of the retail space which existed there.

So, who's the idiot? Maybe it's the people who keep voting for John Sharp thinking that THIS time he won't screw us over like he did in his previous three terms on the council.
