NBC Action News: "Volunteers are knocking on doors all over the Kansas City, Missouri School District as part of Opportunity Knocks. The group should complete the canvass by the end of August."
There are a couple of Mayoral Candidates participating in the effort which is a nice PR gesture but not at all effective as concentrating on what's going on in the classroom.

Hokey. To think some six figure promotion director thought that one up!
ReplyDeleteThe # 1 focus should be to the the disruptors out of the classroom and let the damn teachers teach.... this goes for cranky students and the $100.000 a year administrators who want to micro manage...this knocking on doors is just a make work job for someone who has been handed a political school appointment...
ReplyDeleteRadioman, a group of volunteers dreamed this up and a group of volunteers are leading it. The district is a partner because we didn't think it'd be appropriate to do something of this magnitude without administration's approval. But sadly, none of the organizers make six figures -- and I know the district's not paying me to do this.
ReplyDeleteSteve, research (and basic intuition) suggests that our scholars who have access to mentors, tutors and caring adults fair better in school than do their peers that do not have the same level of access. The basic ask is simple: in whatever ways fits your gifts, get personally invested in the lives of our scholars (preferably as mentors and tutors). Opportunity Knocks is simply a strategy (one of many and one that costs the KCMSD zero dollars) to recruit the mentors, tutors and caring adults that our scholars require.
There are many things that need to happen to transform the KCMSD. The administration is working on most of them. The board is working on a few. But this is something that people in the community can do.
Radioman/Steve, will you join us?
Stop West!!! You want to run for a K. C. City Council seat and trying to fake a name for yourself. Go to college and get a degree. Resign from the KCMSD and understand who you are. You are not impressing anyone.
