Shame on The Star for only giving passing mention to what was a WORLD CLASS SMACKDOWN OF MAYOR FUNKY in the last City Council Legislative Session.
Seriously, I invite readers to check out City Hall's website to watch streaming video of the take down on 100479.
Because it's so important and BECAUSE IT CONTRADICTS WHAT WAS INITIALLY REPORTED IN THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WITHOUT ANY FACT CHECKING . . . I'm including the remarks of Council Dude Johnson in their entirety.
Seriously, this is ground breaking stuff because: Face to Face Councilman Johnson says the points Mayor Funky argued were straight up lies.
The emphasis added is mine but reflects the pattern of speech. Check it:
"Thank you Mr. Mayor. I see that a number of our young leaders have returned to join us to perhaps learn more about the role of City Government. Well, class is in session. And part of being a leader involves a key word: Integrity.
"So here is the lesson for today.
"When someone says to you . . . Let me back up a step.
"This ordinance that we have in front of us deals with allocating money out of a restaurant tax. Approved by the voters of Kansas City. That restaurant tax is earmarked by law. It can only be spent on certain things. And the things it can be spent on is (are) stuff. Hard, physical stuff. Land, buildings.
"It cannot be spent on . . . And it's got to be related to the Convention Center . . .
"It can't be spent on neighborhoods.
"It cannot be spent on marketing.
"So, when someone says to you that this tax money we're appropriating today could be spent on neighborhoods THEY ARE LYING.
"When someone says to you that this tax money that we're appropriating today could be spent on marketing hotels. THEY ARE LYING.
"The Emperor Has No Clothes.
"And I will say it right here today.
"And for those in the Communication Industry that have appointed themselves at the outlet for those lies. You are acting reckless and irresponsible. And the results we achieve are buyer's remorse.
"Since I have been on Council, we have spent more on lawyers and settling lawsuits out of the Mayor's office than we have on this hotel project.
"I ask the Council to move forward with positive things and let the naysayers dwell in isolation."
Councilman Johnson finished his last remarked by gesturing using a "brush off" motion in Mayor Funky's direction.

Following the vote, Johnson went after sweet, old KC Star City Hall reporter Lynn Horsley.

The science thrown down by Council Dude Johnson was amazing. Sadly, because he smacked down mainstream media . . . The comments didn't get much play but the aftermath of the Mayor being completely taken apart by the Councilman and then retreating out of the chamber is being widely noted among this town's political elite.
Don't want a downtown hotel. Don't want Funk. What are my options?

Funk deserves a smackdown but with his sm tendencies, he probably enjoyed it and had to clean himself afterwards.

The backlash against funk'd started with the "regular folks" The business and civic community kept nattering on about "respect for the office" Thankfully, they have given up that ghost while funk'd squanders our city's reputation, time and money.

Let's see yesterday Russ was a tool of Kim Carlos. Today he is a hero because attacks the Mayor since he understands that the only reason the hotel scam continues is so the city council can collect campaign contributions. NO 1,000 room hotel. Russ is a bobble-head.

ReplyDeleteI work at a hotel near the country club plaza, and notice that business is struggling as it is to fill rooms. Hours are getting cut for our employees. It is a big concern to think that a 1,000 room hotel would take up our tax dollars and jobs while the inner city schools are SHUTTING DOWN. please spend money on education and don't waste our money on such a big gamble at this time, unless funding is comeing from private investments. It will deepen the gap of rich and poor.
I can't begin to tell you about all of the similar stories that go on in Kansas City, Missouri. I sat in on most of the Economic Development Council Meetings when the Power and Light District was in the corresponding phases of development. The city hired a consultant to assess the potential success of this project. Their own consultant, who was paid about $70,000.00 told them "no" in a cleverly worded report. I called her on my own, to make sure I understood what was being said. The entire project was approved by the EDC, Parks & Recreation, and City Council without any mention of this report. Somebody should have either discredited or qualified the report in some way, but it was completely ignored. It will be nice to see how this all turns out. This is only one example of their questionable projects.
First of all, the City needs to get their priorities straight: 1. Addressing getting the crime under control here in Kansas City, and all the homicides. 2. Working on more jobs being implemented and available for the people of the city. 3. Getting more activities to do around the Kansas City area for familys and our youth, not just downtown. 4. Fix these sidewalks and potholes all in our streets messing up our cars. Then work on making things for productive downtown and in other areas of the Kansas City area. Downtown is not the only place to have an event, spread your wings and think of other parts of town that can use a face lift. If these things get addressed and fixed then work on this. What point would it make to have tourist come to our city when we can barely feel safe due to all the crime issues. They seem to find money for what they want to find money for, but when it comes to helping the citizens then it is always an issue.

Nobody wants this downtown hotel but nobody wants a Mayor who is either to disingenuous or incompetent to understand how taxpayer funds are distributed.
Johnson could smack down Funk and still be doing the work of Kim Carlos. I fully expect that Kim coached Johnson on everything he said.

Johnson is a puppet for Carlos to make dance around. He was wrong too in the big picture.
Kim Carlos doesn't have anything to do with Russ's campaign, and if you know Russ, you know he isn't anyone's "puppet". And he wasn't wrong; it took guts to call Funk out on his bulls**t. Way to go, Russ!
