Raytown's "Teen" Problem

WDAF: Residents Say Teens Taking Over Raytown Neighborhood . . . Sadly, The Greater Kansas City Area gets more clever in devising language to identify (and often discriminate) against African-American youth every day. TKC Note: Yes, I'm noting the racial element of the story but only because I'm familiar with white people complaining in Raytown and the visual cues provided by the report don't offer any real description.

Comments

  1. You missed the story and the TV station failed to tape some footage that night of the punks, in their rush to get a half baked story on the air before it was done.

The story is about teens wilding in a neighborhood and the police apparently letting them. Where are the parents? What color are they is the wrong question, Tony. Did you see the comments in 4's webstory? Clearly a problem.

And not a racial problem. If the problem kids are mostly black, well that's a social issue in the culture of the black parents in that area. And that, then, would be the story.

Wonder if the story below, (on HIP HOP) has something to do with black teenagers misbehaving? I suppose its racist to suggest there might be a correlation?

  6. Quite the normal from radioman, a mess of words meandering from thought to thought without a concept of reality beyond the limited life lived in suburbia.

Trying to become a critic of the type of journalism practised today with outmoded and a voice of god attitude that is lost on those who refer to many sources for news and information.

Oh yeah this is a joke blog......

  7. Has anyone seen a parallel with wilding kids late at night on the Plaza except that when it's Raytown, no one can say its about upscale white people's businesses.

Most kids in TV news today don't know much about journalism. They have TV/Film production degrees. Very little hands on. The problem though isn't so much a failure in knowing what journalism is, its the stations not wanting to invest in enough reporters so stories that CAN be held for polishing aren't... because they need the filled minutes.

This was an issue story but TV didn't bite. Didn't even bother to go to the cop shop for an interview. Fast News like Fast Food, half cooked and served with a smile.

If you don't know about such things, maybe you should just look at Tony's pictures.

  9. Fletchall will Lose6/3/10, 1:42 PM

The Democrats even have an airheaded and jobless teen running for State Representative in Raytown. Mark my words, that kid Gavin Fletchall will not win because he is not too bright and way too young and too closely allied with a rodent named Richard Tush.

The Governor and the HDCC simply would not listen and get the loser out of the race.

  10. People today feel no need to pay their dues... and voters today don't know enough about the candidates to see who HAS and who HASN'T.

We don't like to decide elections by 30 second commercials and yard signs. But our media in KC has too many jurisdictions to cover, so they cover NONE OF THEM, except on a fast moving crawl of vote numbers on election night.

The media we expect to help us be informed good citizens isn't interested in informing us as the public service they're supposed to be at newstime. They're interested in selling commercials!

We need neighborhood media, neighborhood 'papers' (websites) to cover these things... and a mechanism to get their journalism before those in these various districts.

The internet is a wonderous thing, but we haven't quite yet figured out how to use it effectively.

It would be good if KansasCity dot com, would set up relationships with neighborhood 'papers'/ websites and link to them for better news. Like Drudge Does but not so partisan!

Expanding the Star's service to the entire city.

This is thinking out of the box. Write me if you want to pay me for good, solid, common sense consulting on expanding your media reach. I don't charge that much but if you want to pay more, I'll let you. We consultant types know we get more customers if we charge more. The common perception is that expensiveness equates to quality. Which it doesn't.

  11. Yes there is a racial issue but not what Tony raised. The real racial issue is why is it only news when whites in white neighborhoods complain about these thugs? I think they should complain but the stable black residents (the ones that work, pay taxes, buy homes or at least pay their rent on time) in predominantly black neighborhoods call in complaints all the time. I know the media portrays this area as complicit in the crime but they are not. The problem is that the cops are out numbered, possibly out gunned and afraid. They do nothing but show up after the shooting but not to quell the situation you report leading up to it (the loitering, the "wilding" the loud music).

When they arrive they chid the citizen for having a bit of an annoyed attitude because this is taking place. "Calm down. Nothing we can do unless we see it."

So people stop reporting. They either lock themselves in or move and leave their house to be sold to a slumlord who will rent to another group of thugs. Sorry to say that's the route I took but I got tired of being a marter.

  12. This isn't the inner city and yes the neighborhood is in transition, but this is still a middle class neighborhood we are talking about, I know because I grew up there and my parents still live there.

What we have is a bunch of middle class teenage thugs that think they are hot for beating on defenseless people. This was the second news story about the same group of kids in the last week.

What will Tony say when they pick on someone in the neighborhood who isn't as defenseless as they look and someone ends up dead..
