Right now in Kansas City's midtown area speculation is running rampant over a the legal fate of a public figure and high profile local property owner.
TKC IS HERE TO BLOG SOME FACTS!!!
Brent Lambi owns a lot of property in Midtown. He is an active participant in MainCor and the list of buildings he owns is truly impressive. He is often quoted by the local press and has been an active supporter of urban renewal projects like the developments in Ivanhoe and many others. Lambi is also a major political campaign contributor in Kansas City.
That's why it's interesting to me that mainstream media didn't bother reporting the fact that the Kansas City high profile denizen has been named in a civil lawsuit involving exposure to HIV.
I actually had to do some research on this post which consisted of discovering some real research done by another reporter behind one of those finicky pay walls.
Actually, The Daily Record in Kansas City and Missouri Lawyers Media did all of the real reporting of this local story.
Still, in order to stop the spread of rumors I think it's important to reveal the facts of the case as they were brilliantly chronicled by reporter Alyson Raletz but unfortunately hidden away from the eyes of the public.
Fact: In a story originally reported on 12/08/2009, there are details of a lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court against Brent Lambi, of Kansas City, for negligence, concealment, negligent infliction of emotional distress and battery.
According To The Story: "Upon information and belief, defendant knew or in the exercise of reasonable care should have known that he was HIV-positive and/or that he had not been tested HIV-negative at the time of his contrary representation to plaintiff in or around September 2008," the suit stated."
Important: "Lambi hasn't been charged with the equivalent criminal statute of knowingly infecting another with HIV, according to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's office."
Damages: "The plaintiff is seeking actual, nominal and punitive damages, including past and future medical treatment and expenses, decreased life expectancy, lost future wages and earning capacity, future pain and suffering, emotional pain, suffering, anguish and distress."
This is a civil case . . . Another lawyer in the story noted that "that civil litigation carries less of a burden of proof than proving the comparable criminal allegations but warned that they're still difficult cases."
While criminal cases regarding HIV infection are becoming more common, trying this kind of case in civil court is far more infrequent. According to Missouri Court Records the case is currently scheduled to be heard by Judge Peggy Stevens McGraw at 9:30 A.M. on June 1st of this year.
The real question in this case is why local media has stayed quiet in what is a noteworthy local legal case. The implications for development on Main and in local civic circles are widespread. The faces of local minorities and po'folk involved in petty theft and assault are blasted all over the media while the rich and powerful escape the same kind of scrutiny. Still, highlighting disparity in Kansas City wasn't my motive in creating a post on this subject.
In fact, it was numerous rumors in the local LGBT community that sparked by concern. All court records available show that Lambi has kept current in dealing with this case. The Service Information on the case is up to date and the trail seems to be progressing normally. This blog post is really an effort to put down speculation about the subject and reveal the facts reported by The Daily Record in Kansas City and Missouri Lawyers Media rather than rely on gossip or rumor.
There is a lot more to learn about this story. However, as of now it is simply one more tale of Kansas City legal drama that should remind folks in this town to be careful about what they do and what they accept as fact.

ReplyDeleteThe rumors are that he left the country for months in order to lay low until this case blows over. The problem is he laid so low his lawyer bailed on him, meanwhile his property empire goes untended.
Despite occasional largess, usually for political gain, he is generally regarded as a first rate asshole.
i don't see how one can report on alligations that are not yet proven. the plaintiff is a golddigger and a class A hooker...why are you not reporting on that?

ReplyDeleteI know Mr. Lambi; and I know for a fact that while he can be a resolute businessman (one has to be these days), he has also been extremely generous with his time and financial support for city projects and other community causes. He does this not because it benefits him, he does it because he believes in giving back to the community. I do not believe it is fair or responsible to speculate on guilt or innocence on the Internet. Mr. Lambi, to my knowledge, has never sought publicity for his good deeds and has always been generous with his friendships and relationships. His former partner of many years is a very rich man because of his generosity. Someone who does all of these good things cannot be the deceitful person this article implies. There are always two sides to a story, so let us all take a deep breath and let the story unfold before we pass judgment.

People who do "good" things can also be liars. It's true Brent is known for being generous with his pet causes but he is also known for being a reckless mess when it comes to his personal life. The lawsuit is the sad end result of his carelessness.

ReplyDeleteBottom line is this. Brent has money... would this post be up or this conversation even be going on if he was poor? No! HIV/Aids is very easily avoidable, its called safe sex. While I do believe everyone has a duty to inform a potential partner of positive status it is up to you to protect yourself. I dont know the stats but roughly 6000 in Greater KC metro are living with HIV/Aids how do you think they got it???????? Why dont you put a post up about that. No money in that though right...
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else in KC who puts themselves out there in the public eye, Brent Lambi is fair game to be sliced,diced and defamed by bloggers and anonymous posters. Many reputations have been destroyed on these types of blogs. It's sad we have a society today that relishes in the fall of the mighty. This scandalous lawsuit would have gone largely unnoticed 10 years ago. Now it will remain forever on the internet in plain site for all to see.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if he does have HIV? and if he does who did he sue or blame.?? Maybe that slime ball John gave it to him ....sounds like a gold rush called greedy prostitutes and slimey lawyers ....Kansas City no doubt just lost someone who invested in the inner city properties and protected thses properties with his own savings gave to charties .and always helped anyone that usually asked......but then again some people dont wnat to know the truth they just want smear someone that like a jealous child . Maybe if people worried this much about curing AIDS this story would be moot.....but it seems most people in Kansas City would rather exploit a problem than solve it.......look at your school system as a prime example.

I am sure the attorneys would love public reporting of STDS then every hooker in town could move to Mission Hills ..oh hookers and attorneys as neighbors ...sound like perfect combo.. so much in common.....screwing people over.....lol

I have heard from reliable sources he did not tell his partners he was positive before sleeping with them...he is such a COWARD!! RUN COWARD RUN
ReplyDeleteAfter knowing Brent Lambi for more than 5 years and any one else that knows the true Brent Lambi we all know that it is all his way. the sad thing is that he was a nice person till liquor and drugs took over his life you are dealing with a man that is to smart for his own good and he will self destruct himself and others if not careful. Its another case of to much money and no happiness. I wish Brent no harm but have always wished he would get psychological help and then all of this might of not happened
