Kansas City Snow Removal Fail For Mayor

So . . . Mayor Funky spent 2 years blaming Kay Barnes for all his problems and now he'll spend the remainder of his lame duck tenure trying to pin all of his failings on former City Manager Wayne Cauthen.

But the buck stops at the Mayor's office and the simple fact is . . .

THE X-MAS BLIZZARD HAS MADE IT PAINFULLY CLEAR THAT KANSAS CITY SNOW REMOVAL IS SERIOUSLY LACKING!!!

Again, maybe if a half-a-mil wouldn't have been thrown out the door by Gloria Squitiro thanks to the Mammygate Lawsuit maybe snow removal workers might have had more resources at their disposal . . . So much for Funky promises of "A City that Works" and more of a focus on basic services. There is just no way the mayor should get a pass on this one. Overland Park street crews are clearing residential streets meanwhile there are certain roads, passages and corners of this town who have no idea what a City Snow Removal Truck looks like.

Once again the Mayor of Kansas City has nothing to offer but excuses and has been in hiding for the worst snowfall and street mess this town has seen in a generation.

AND ALL THIS HAS INSPIRED TONIGHT'S TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!!

Mayor Funky's lack of snow removal is having consequences for motorists . . . But on the bright side KC Photog Blog is getting some great photos.

Here are some of my favorite songs related to snow and bad weather . .

So be careful out there on streets that Mayor Funky and The City Council have ignored. Sadly, The Star and most other media outlets have ignored this issue because they live in Johnson County.

As always, thank you for reading and have a safe and fun weekend.

I wonder if the lack of salt available for snow removal/road maintenance has anything to do with the Squid enjoy salt on her eggs and anything else she eats and that she dipped into the reserves of salt kept by the City for the citizens? I mean after all with her husband being so hard working on the clock 24/7 for KCMO, why should or would we begrudge her a couple of scoops of salt for her own personal pleasure?

  8. Funk you cannot blame anyone else for this failure.

I am surprised that the dead-tree media and the dead-head media has let Funk get a free ride on this. Who is buying Mahoney beer and keeping him silent. Who is providing DeAnn with new sex toys for her silence? Who is providing Dave Helling sex toys to garner his silence? Hey Fuck Sticks, there is a story here that might sell newspapers or up ratings! DO YOUR JOBS!

And as for the lame members of City Council, especially Jan, Cindy and Beth, where the hell are you? You should be beating the drum for your constituents. You are no where to be found.

In real cities, much larger cities than here, the expectation is that all the streets will be cleared, not just main arteries -- and KC is not even doing that.

I saw that the city estimated that it would cost 200K to clean the streets after this storm -- that is just about one Chuck Eddy. Fire Chuck and clean the streets with the proceeds!

Funk ran on the slogan "the city that works." The old term for Chicago. Well Funk, in Chicago they vote people out of office if the streets are not cleared.

Funk you said that you could do the job, but that was a lie. Ever since you were elected all we have heard are excuses. Kay did this to me. Wayne did this to me. Fuck that noise Funkhouser! You can't do the job. Do us all a favor and quit.

You are a loser Funkhouser. Go away. Find some dump in the Ozarks where you can hide with that skag.

Tony this is really an issue where you could make your point if you hammer Funkhouser on it.

Don't know what everybody is bitching about, when you elect a shitty mayor you're gonna get a shitty city government.

If you wanted your streets plowed than you should of moved to either Gladstone or JoCo.

    Quit cryin'.

Anyway, with all the money the city takes out of our paychecks via the E-Tax, the city could be plowing year round. Ohh, I forgot, they gave all the E-Tax money to the rich developers.

    Bwwwahhhhahahahahhahahahahahaha

  12. I wish I had a dollar for each time I heard a fire truck, police car or ambulance tell their dispatcher they were stuck in the snow in a residential neighborhood. Funky's (non)snow removal is not just an inconvenience, it is a life safety issue.

  13. In New York City, things like trash pick up are done by city employees rather than for-profit contractors with ties to the mob. If a big storm hits NYC, they simply convert sanitation efforts to snow removal. It works.

Funk is too stupid to be creative about getting the job done.

  15. This is nothing new. KC has been horrible about snow removal for decades. Wasn't it just a few years ago that Kay's block was cleared and others in her neighborhood weren't? Or am I misremembering that?

I took the kids from home in PV to Brookside yesterday and they could see the difference between the states--it's a visible difference in the streets. Told my dad today, who's looking for a house, that he couldn't move to KC, he had to stay in JoCo, because KC's services are such a joke.

On my side street in PV, they plowed twice yesterday, and the arterial streets were cleared. I expect we'll see them again tonight or tomorrow morning.

You hit the nail on the head with this one T. This was the heart of the issue with Funkhouser and there is no arguing that he has failed. Hell, is he even in town or is he up at the cabin again. He let Kansas City down on the snow removal issue. We all knew this was going to be a rough winter and he wasn't watching the ball.

He paid more attention to his wife than Kansas City streets.

  22. anon 4:45...PV to Brookside, hmm, no doubt to take advantage of the great things we in KC have to offer and pick up the tab for. JoCo never pays for anything that is part of living in a big city...yes we have problems, that result from an aging infrastructure and a diverse demographic, but at least we're not freeloaders.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My view's always been if KC residents would quit killing each other and rippin each other off, maybe THEY could have more road crews than cops... like the suburbs do.

Ya can't have it ALL Tony. I expect if it wasn't for the income tax on suburbanites and some nice areas north and out south, KCMO wouldn't have the tax base even to do the Snow Routes.

But KC's never had good snow removal. Nuthin to do with this mayor, or the last one, or the one before that. Got to do with that most people who have money left the inner city.

Who pays for the projects, anyway? Are there projects? Are there projects where suburban snow crews are plowing the neighborhoods?

I know my street's plowed by 5am on a snow day, every time. And probably again 4 hours later if it's still snowing.

Why is this hard for you, or do you just have a funk for the funk?

Maybe if you'd quit bittchin about dress codes, and other whiny crap, wasting taxpayer dollars appeasing your asses, there'd be money for snow removal.

  24. Well, this is what you get when you post pictures for people to peruse with one hand on the keyboard: Critical-thinking skills that are right up there with TKC's. Yes, yes, KC should spent MILLIONS on preparations for a once-a-century storm. It snowed. Bad. Get over it, people. Trying to assign blame for this is as pointless an exercise as trying to figure out how Tony is able to concentrate on posting Denise Milani shots while his mom is going down on him.

  26. MoDOT and KDOT were both overwhelmed by this storm, so I would not expect perfect roads and streets from any governmental entity after this storm. Even pricy JoCo suburbs like Leawood were struggling. However, KC's snow removal has indeed been dysfunctional for a long time. It's not a matter of blame, it's a matter of fixing it finally.
Radioman, I'd stay away from the eggnog when commenting on TKC; your anger and racism are showing.

  27. 4:45 - You can't compare a town with about 50 streets to a city with hundreds (thousands?) of miles of streets. A better comparison would be Overland Park, and my family near Oak Park Mall hasn't seen a plow yet.

However, all the streets in my KCMO neighborhood have been plowed... at least 4 times. Of course they are reburied again a couple of hours later but they are all passable.

  38. No eggnog involved. Not about racism or anger until you realize that in THIS society, in THIS city, in THIS country, black people don't contribute as much to the tax base as white people do.

Not because only 10% of the population is black. IN KC, it's way more than that, but rather most of em don't make as much as other cultural groups.

LESSON: DO NOT suggest that when someone states a sociological truthful statement he/she IS a racist or angry just because it's not a high compliment to the race/culture being mentioned.

    REVIEW:

IT'S NOT RACISM. But yup, it might be largely about RACE! It's about the money. Poor people don't make much money. (cough, cough, did I say that?) So cities don't get so much money per household than say, Johnson County KS, Orange County CA, Hillsboro Co FL (Tampa). Non whites in the US don't fare so well, right?

I'm sure if KCMO had the choice to annex a new Briarcliff kind of area or an inner city Van Brunt area, they'd go for the one that has the higher property valuation and residential areas with higher mean incomes. Is that racism? No. It's economic sense.

SO LEARN THIS LESSON! I'm not a racist. FLASH! But I'm not afraid to bring race in, when its pertinent and true. That does not make radioman a racist. Makes him honest. The racists are the ones who look at their shoelaces when there's the big RACIAL ELEPHANT in the room and they pretend it's the 'school board' or 'the mayor' but not institutional/cultural racism!

Tho with all the blowing and drifting, well.

Let me point out, that I've been physically indisposed from shoveling a foot of snow off my driveway the past couple months... but. There's a guy about my age (nearly or ON the public dole) with a very fancy gas- powered Honda snow blower.

They guy's doing several of my neighbor's double-car driveways. I go ask him if he's making a living, how much he charges. He says he's doing it just for fun. given that he's doing the driveway across the street from my house, I say, well, I'd rather pay you. He says, no, he'll take care of my driveway.

He did it in ten minutes and clearly didn't have a heart attack after a half dozen driveways. We managed to take a half a case of Tampa Oranges as big as grapefruits over to his house in appreciation because no way can we eat them all.

I don't know him, so don't know if he was a 40 year Ford Union worker LUCKILY with a great retirement, a ne-er do well rich man's son who lucked into a pile of money, or a hard- working guy who didn't have kids so he can just afford to buy a huge Honda snow blower or anything else he wants because he's not repaying tuition loans.

In any case, my view's that if you have excess money, spend it where it does the most good, and don't call the TV stations for a minute and a half plug. Can be with Harvesters, or being Secret Santa, or sending your money overseas to feed black children in Angola, or Coats for Kids or... well ya get the idea.`

Just don't send your money to the Republicans. Even tho so many of them gained THEIR fortunes just like you did.

There's a lot to be said about people sending their excess money to people who happened to be short of it. I know, I know. That sounds soooo socialist. Scrooge McDuck probably wouldn't do that. But well....

  49. Well, I got to echo the statement above that this was hardly a "once in a century" storm. I've lived in KC since 1974, and have seen at least a dozen like it, and many of them worse.

Now as far as the Funky fans trying to say snow removal was always bad, nope, sorry. After humongous storms in the late 70s, the city decided to contract everyone with a Chevy Suburban and a snowplow, just to do first passes on residential streets near their homes. Worked like a charm.

And I would also like to point how how quickly the tree limbs were picked up following the ice storm of 2002. Now THAT was a "once in a century" storm.

The 3-1-1 employees are totally useless and making excuses like, "We got hit hard." Yes, that sometimes happens in Kansas City. That's why you fricking prepare for it, and then plow the damn streets when it happens. I don't expect them to be as quick as in a snowier city, but in areas where this happens frequently, they have the streets plowed in a matter of hours. A week later, and KC still can't get it done. Can we sue them for taking our money and failing to provide basic services?
