Political Ethics in Kansas City Don't Exist In the Funkhouser Era

Joe Miller comes up with a great post that puts my Kansas City Ethics Commission hyperbole in perspective.
"As you no doubt recall, I reported back in early September that the Commission hasn't met for over a year. In fact, longtime members of the Commission didn't even know who the chairperson is until I told them.

The chair, LaJuana Counts, appointed by Funkhouser when I was still working for him, had never contacted them.

So I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this group to step up and do something about the mayor."
For the most part I agree with him: Under Mayor Funky's watch Ethics rules and regs are completely non-existent.

However . . . This BIG-ASS 600 PAGE ETHICS AUDIT OF MAYOR FUNKY would be a perfect opportunity for Kansas City to show that politicos are accountable for playing fast and loose with the codes that govern their political office.

If Mayor Funky wasn't such a cretin and he really cared about local government in Kansas City and his office . . . He would move toward getting the Ethics Commission in line.

Tragically, it seems that The City Council has lost their teeth and are unwilling to challenge Mayor Funky. If they were on their game they might suggest some Ethics Commission improvements and more regularly scheduled convening of meetings.

Without these kinds of checks and balances Kansas City government is (even more of) a joke and widespread voter apathy is strangely justified.

Did you see the article here? Beth is trying to fix the situation.

Beth is running scared. She is indebt to her Daddy for her last campaign and cannot raise money for this one. She is learning the wrong lessons from the bad political place she finds herself in.

The Orange Revolution should end with Funk and Squid in Orange Jumpsuits.

To the extent that Beth tries to make everyone look bad, to gloss over the car wreck -- she will end her political career.

Joe Miller should stop lecturing the Mayor on ethics. He committed a working on a campaign while still getting his city employee 100 percent paycheck and health insurance. Better consult with an attorney. You will need one.

Sorry...left out the word "crime". It is a crime to work on a campaign while working in city hall between 8-5 weekdays. It doesn't matter who told you to.

That's how far politics has fallen in KC. When the council, the benchmark for mental retardation, looks like a good alternative to the mayor.

oh shut up about Beth.. Shit, the poor thing is barely keeping her head above water right now. Do not encourage her to try a run for anything. It is awful to think of all of her money being blow away on some crazy idea like a higher office. Leave her alone. With a little bit of luck, she will make it through this term.

Joe Miller must be hanging around a toilet stool. Having the heebie jeebies when he thinks about attorney fees, monetary sanctions. etc for helping out loser funk'd. Sure he wrote a piece about Municipal Ethics taking a pass. Wishful thinking?

It was really a surprise to see the blatant disregard for ethics, common decency and a transparent government from the Gruesome Twosome.

We all expected better from at least you, Funk. And you let us down.

I am not sure what anyone expected from the Squid since none of us knew she was coming on board.

Long live the Orange Revolution, the Orange Revolution is dead!

How did Beth Gottstein get involved in this discussion? And who cares what she does or does do for the next year? Nor should anyone care if she takes after the Funk for his ethical transgressions... a waste of time. He's got a year left. Jeff Roe, no, Big Jeff Roe has him adequately muzzled and jerky up and down off of the puppet master Roe's strings. And the Funk is stubborn, disruptive and litigious... especially when he's not paying the bill.

Beth... back to the New Reform Temple with your new man slave... leave the Funk to the voters. And concentrate on your re-election if that's going to make you happy (as if anything can make you happy).

1:17 -- I wasn't talking about Beth. I was speaking generally about the level of incompetence that fills the council chambers like a really wet fart.

NOBODY on the present council has any common sense or a shred of ethics. I have watched how a dress code dominates the schedule, how a takeover of an ambulance service was railroaded without any facts and the stench of self-interest came through, how a light rail vote of the people was overturned, how they paid off a lawsuit that could have been settled for hundreds of thousands less, and so on and so forth.
