Blogging The Great White Way: More Tacit Racism in the Attacks Against Community Activist Alonzo Washington!!!

Like it or not, Alonzo Washington helps to solve murders and serves an important and unpaid role as a facilitator between urban communities and law enforcement officials. In these communities there's a legacy of institutional racism that lingers and continues to inspire distrust of the police while providing fertile ground for "stop snitchin" rhetoric. Encouraging cooperation with authorities and promoting involvement against crime in neighborhoods under violent siege from criminals who are continually bolstering Kansas City's murder rate won't be accomplished by media or Public Relations Campaigns. In the end, it's going to require the commitment of members of these communities to bravely battle violence and murder in the urban core and Alonzo Washington is one of the most strident voices in this effort.

Even better, Mr. Washington has refused to adopt the typical hat in hand, kowtowing, "poor me" rhetoric used by a previous generation of leaders in minority communities. Mr. Washington's public persona is bold, uncompromising and provocative. Judging from his success, it's clear Washington's image speaks to the ethos of folks in the urban core who struggle every day with violence in their community.

Unfortunately, quite a few folks in Kansas City's largely white blogging community have taken umbrage with Washington's style that refuses to bow down to their cultural values.

The latest string of attacks against Washington come from an anony blog called The Bovine Comedy.

Admittedly, some of their criticism of Mr. Washington's grammar are kind of funny if only because any blogger, writer or reporter working for any length of time will accrue an embarrassing number of typos, mistakes and misspellings. Then again, I'm beginning to think there's a reason the term "Grammar Nazi" rings true.

Bottom Line: Mr. Washington's has a solid reputation for helping to solve crime and murders in Kansas City that is unmatched by any of his blogger critics.

And none of this is to claim that criticism of Mr. Washington's tactics isn't appropriate; even in the minority community he has his detractors . . . But it would be a mistake if a brash style or typos negated the record of one of Kansas City's most ardent and helpful voices against crime.

Also, I can't recall when "The Bovine Comedy" did anything to help the urban core . . . No, providing a haven for Pitch writers trying to work out their angst doesn't count.

Nevertheless . . . Blogger Beef is good for business and everybody knows as much. And maybe that's where the real issues of SUPREMACY arise . . .

WHITE BLOGGERS ATTACKING WASHINGTON FOR HIS CRIME FIGHTING EFFORTS ARE MOSTLY JUST STRUGGLING TO GET ATTENTION!!!

Picking a fight is a solid blog promotion strategy . . . Which is just another way that middle-class white people get a free ride from minority communities . . . Other than Truman Sports Complex funding . . . So the joke just might be on anybody who takes blogs or any online publication too seriously. And I would be remiss if I didn't admit that this entire post is, in part, simply an effort to take a slapfight in the Kansas City blogosphere and make it my own . . . Rather than just see a bunch of middle-class white people rob and pillage without so much as buying a condo.

Maybe to get attention they should go bald but have their hair inked-in so that no one notices?

  2. Maybe Bovine Comedy is just a joke blog so they do not have to worry about truth or good-taste?

  4. Tony, lighten up...they're COWS!

What do COWS know? Especially those in KC, a town that is renown for it's BBQ. I like my COWS cooked at Rosedale. Good stuff when it is warm and hot off the grill!

  9. People don't attack Alonzo for his crime fighting efforts as much as his "look at me" efforts. It's great that he encourages people to give him tips to pass along to the police. It's problematic that he promotes himself as a tip receiving source by denigrating the crime-fighting efforts of everyone else in the community.

Ideally, there would be sufficient trust in the community for people to share their information directly with the police. I don't think Alonzo Washington is working towards that ideal. I think his ideal is that every crime in the city is solved through him. If that got every crime in the city, solved, fine... but it seems unlikely to happen that way.

  10. Oh my god, a rational, sane, articulate commenter at TKC? Sophia, consider me subscribed.

And Tony, you are no stranger to the Blogger Beef. Half the reason i still check in here is to see who you are talking shit about.

  11. Bloggers who use all caps in bold, red font could also be accused of struggling to get attention. Also, there's the whole objectifying women for hits thing...

  12. Sophia: You said exactly what I was thinking, only better.

"Mr. Washington has refused to adopt the ....... "poor me" rhetoric "

Uhhhhh wrong. Yes he has. Whine whine whine.

And I actually like Washington, but he invites his treatment of him for the most part.

  13. Tony, you do realize that your "KC News Bloggers" really should be called the "Alonzo feed" because EVERY story there is by him writing about himself.
He doesn't give a shit about anything other than to draw attention to himself.
    And you simply enable him.

  14. The attention whore thing is a problem for Washington but it also keeps him on the radar of those he is trying to reach, young, street-guys who actually respond to that type of rhetoric. Like it or not you are talking about a counter culture and Washington's tactics speak to them. You only tone him down once you find a way for those people he speaks to to become fully integrated and assimilated into the larger community through better education, more jobs and a difference in their own attitude. Until then they will know what is going on on the streets and Washington will contine to reach them.
And I think he is right to a degree about the lack of success of other crime fighters. The vigils are played out. The cops don't have enough minority officers to get information from the streets or to infiltrate these gangs. So Washington is what's left.

  17. And I see that he is still holding his head from the pain he got hit upside the head with when I told him the truth about himself a few weeks ago. I said my peace and kept it moving, but last night one of my sisters called me last night to inform me that Alonzo Washington wrote about me again last week in his myspace blog.

People in the "hood" and the "burbs" do not care for this Alonzo Washington person for the very reasons Sophia stated above.

But please, know that if he was so effective, respected and well- connected as he claims, crime in the community on both sides of the state line would not be out of control and more cases will be solved.

What Alonzo Washington is too foolish and uneducated to understand is that you don't make fighting crime in your community into some self-promoting circus because people will not take you or your efforts seriously. How can you have a "Snitch to Get Rich" campaign when you don't have a pot to pee in yourself? Who are the major funders for this effort?

This Alonzo Washington guy is a legend in his own mind who often exaggerates or outright lies about his input in solving high profile cases. I sent him an email a couple of years ago to get in touch with Erica Greene's grandfather, who is the real-life hero in the Precious Doe case case--NOT HIM.

The thing about this guy is that he feels as if the world owes him something, begs for handouts, hunts for publicity, has been trying for years to get this "Omega Man" superhero/action figure/comic book business off the ground, criticizes the local media for failing to shine a spotlight on him and constantly cries about everybody somehow being against him.

Point blank, people see through him and when they point this out, he swears that they're "haters" who are either men who are jealous of him(doubtful) or women who are interested in dating him(comical).

I was indifferent to him in the past, but when I saw the way he pimped the Precious Doe/Erica Greene and Michael Todd cases, I saw him for what he really is: a tragedy pimp and an self-aggrandizing opportunist. He acts as if he single-handedly solved the Precious Doe case when many people in the community were instrumental in helping find the child's murderers and her remains in the woods. This is something that I have firsthand, personal knowledge about as well as many other individuals who are family and friends of victims or were instrumental in helping crack these cases. This is why don't respect or support him or his "efforts." But unfortunately, Alonzo Washington is way too arrogant and ignorant to understand this. We are talkging about a guy who has a wife and six children, who is an aspiring comic book author and community activist and community college student who is trying to create a platform and a profittable business for himself, which is understandable and commendable, but what makes it despicable and distasteful is when you exploit other people's pain to do so.

This is my last time responding to somethng that Alonzo Washington writes about me because I do not like giving him the attention that he so desperately craves and don't want to be remotely associated with him or his antics(and I sincerely thank appreciate and extend my gratitude to Barb Shelley for not using him in her article about Richard and Kevin in the Star). It would have only added insult to injury for all of us who loved and cared about them and Michael.

  18. Really, if you go to Alonzo's site, you realize it's "All Alonzo, all the time." He really does seem like a "legend in his own mind." Proof? On his site, he has a place where you can tell him what you think of him. How wierd is that? How cloying. Ick. Focus on the problems, A. Seriously.

  21. It's easy to comment like the above if you've never had a one-on-one conversation with Alonzo. Previous commenter is right about people in "the hood" not liking Alonzo and people in "the burbs" not liking Alonzo. People who defy definition and rail against stereotypes rarely find an easy home.
P.S. For those commenting from the comfort of the burbs re: his crimefighting technique and not his results -- it's easy to be an editor. It's harder to write the script. Sleep easy knowing that there isn't going to be a rolling gun battle down your street tonight at midnight.

  22. Come on, Alonzo's site really is all about Alonzo. He'd be much more effective if he toned himself down and put the issues front and center, minus himself.

He may do good things but his site shows it's all about him.
