TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! CROOKED CITADEL PLAZA PROJECT LIKELY TO BE PUSHED THROUGH TOMORROW!!! CULTURE OF CORRUPTION RULES KANSAS CITY!!!

Another day, another disappointment in Kansas City.

One of the most AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS just sent an e-mail in order to inform me that more than 20 million bucks just might be rammed through the City Council legislative session tomorrow in order to fund the Citadel Plaza project!!!

And before we get into this . . . Let's consider development deals in Kansas City's African-American community for a second. Of course we need to invest money in the Eastside, of course the dividing lines in this town are disgusting and representative of an overall sense of SUPREMACY that permeates this town. But tax breaks and sleazy public money deals don't hold the promise of the road to prosperity because they usually only benefit a few suits and politicos (see: Mayor Funky's New Tools Program). Again and again, it's important to realize that a greater focus on SECURITY is the only way to spark economic development on the Eastside. On the other side of Troost entrepreneurs are far more innovative than anywhere else in the metro . . . But crime kills business . . . So every bit of economic stimulus sent that way simply ends up wasted because of a failure to truly connect, cooperate and fund the Eastside in order to achieve a lower crime rate and safer neighborhoods -- The cornerstone of any successful business attempt. The tragedy in all of this is that it's all set up as a racial issue rather than simply looking for an expedient way to control crime on the Eastside.

Now, let's get to the details of the the upcoming Citadel Plaza Debacle:

Word is, the money slated to come from the Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC).

Rumor has it that the deal is the brainchild of City Hall Finance dude Jeff Yates who has a penchant for experimenting with weird financing schemes at the behest of City Manager Wayne Cauthen. The fast and loose approach to City Hall finances and freakish experiments have labeled Yates as "Kansas City's Mengele of money." Which is quite a clever nickname for this cowtown.

The advance of money out of PIAC's 5 year plan violates rules (i.e. laws) regarding use of public funds for private projects.

Most importantly . . .

THIS PROPOSED CITADEL PLAZA PUSH THROUGH VIOLATES CITY CHARTER REGULATIONS REGARDING INTER-FUND BORROWING!!!

However, there's a small glimmer of hope the deal might not happen because the Council needs a 2/3rds majority vote on this move and not just a simple majority. However, judging from charter legal confusion in the past . . . There's no telling whether or not this rule (i.e. law) will be enforced.

In the final analysis, despite the fact that this thing could be turned into yet another racial issue . . . The bad finances of this deal are a big part of what is pushing Kansas City into bankruptcy and ruining this town's credit ranking. Of course there will be silly defenses of the details of this deal but the fact is that, in the end, it's really just a horribly planned scheme using taxpayer dollars to finance a weird semi-private deal. It's corporate welfare plain and simple . . . With little chance of success. Citadel Plaza has, so far, been an unmitigated environmental and economic disaster. And now, politicos are trying to move quickly under the radar and encourage Kansas City to simply and stupidly throw money at the problem.

  2. So what should be done about the Citadel project? It has been stalled for nearly a decade. Isn't about time they started developing that area that has been an eyesore for all of these years?

  3. Corruption --- Where is the name Henry Rizzo in this post? There ain't no real corruption until Henry takes his cut.

  4. This deal is garbage. Call or e-mail your council person and tell them to vote NO:

  5. Yancy, do you ever consider facts, maybe a little critical thinking or even, dare I say....analysis?

Sorry, let me be clear, analysis involves math, logic, a little more than the race + race = race formula.

It doesn't appear you have those skills. Go back to organizing, that way you don't have to think.

  6. The police only need 3 Mill to make their budget, but Terry Riley and Mark Funkhouser have decided to spend 20 Mill on making rich people richer.

  7. What a fucking stupid thing to say - it's been stalled for years, therefore we should do it.

Good reasoning - anon at 9:05, you're right, the broad can't think straight.

  8. dumb!!! what more can be said.

  9. As long as money is being wasted outside of the Eastside and not given to a Black church then it's ok with you cowards who post insults anonymosly on blogs. Typical passive-aggresive racist bullcrap as usual never direct. I never said anything about race. You are the ones who post "nigger" this and "nigger"that on this thing daily. It doesn't offend me because I know that you only do it to make yourself feel better about your own pathetic lives. And besides, I know that you'd never call somebody a "nigger" or "beaner" to their face. )You are just mad because you couldn't get McCain elected and Funkhouser recalled and why rich developers will continue to rob you blind. I'll do like Tony from now on and not pay you no mind since you don't have the guts to identify yourself-even on the internet. Idiots...

  10. ...And I don't recall any of you geniuses providing an answer to my original question because your intellectual capacity is only limited to typing childish insults and taking cheap shots instead of engaging in a real debate on the issue. You people really out to get out and see the world and interact with diverse people more-seriously.

Yancy, lay off the malt liquor.

So let me see if I get this correctly.

Some folks want business' around the 'hood hospital. The people that want this can't make it happen on their own so they want the people that pay taxes to do it for them.

There comes a time when the white folks need to say 'you've gotten enough' former slaves'. Go get your own future. You've been freed by the big O. Quit trying to suck up our white money.

  12. I am soooo sick of the race-baiting in KC. Know how to stop an intellectual debate? Call people racists. The only way to prove you're not one is to throw dollars at minorities whether or not it is in the their best interest or smart for the city or community. And if a black minister like the Reverend John Modest Miles comes up with a great, much-needed project IS good for the city/community and it wins the support of some in the white community, call HIM racist. Puh-leeze!

  13. 11:32 - I'm grossed out by people who take the bait, too. Not that it matters.

  14. Here's an answer, wait for a developer that is willing to commit *some* of their own money . . . if you can't find one willing to promise anything, that's a sure sign it's a bad project.

I feel certain it will be held tomorrow, Riley, Sharp and Funkhouser probably won't have the votes to make it happen.

So step up an be a leader all you annonys. Make that Citadel Plaza project important. Make it a shining example of 'inner city' leadership. Make it a place people WANT to go to. Not a place littered with plastic bottles and syringes. I dare you!

Take me up on this challenge! Make me want to shop there. Otherwise STFU all you 'community organizers'.

Unfortunately this is a case of Not Gonna Happen. Wish it would.

  16. All time best commenter name "inconvenient Ruth"

    That's funny shit.

And yes. This place needs real support if we're going to waste so much money on it.

  17. Just a question, what retail is waiting in the wings to go into that area? I'm not sure I understand why you're pushing a project that will be sitting empty, waiting for an economic recovery that could take a very long time. Even in the best of times convincing retail to commit to a contract is tough.
So who have you got lined up?
