TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! FUNKHOUSER ABANDONS KANSAS CITY!!! THE MAYOR IS A NO-SHOW AT TWO IMPORTANT LOCAL EVENTS THIS WEEKEND!!!

For quite some time now I've argued that Kansas City doesn't really have a Mayor.

The last remaining bit of Mark Funkhouser's political capital was destroyed during the budget debate. He was completely ignored by the entire City Council and he couldn't even get a second from his fellow politicos to listen to his proposal. In the aftermath, he was so much of a non-factor that media stopped reporting a lot of his complaints.

Folks who see him regularly say that the Mayor is looking glum and out of sorts lately . . . I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with him and it's just a case of his continued lack of good judgment when it comes to running Kansas City; because this weekend just about every major political player in this town noticed one thing . . .

Mayor Funkhouser was nowhere to be found.

First . . .

NEITHER MAYOR FUNKHOUSER NOR ANY MEMBER OF HIS ADMINISTRATION ATTENDED THE PRECIOUS DOE MEMORIAL DEDICATION ON SATURDAY!!!

We already know that Mayor Funky's staff is notoriously idle and according to a deposition from Kendrick "Lazy Bones" Blackwood . . . He doesn't spend anything close to 40 hours a week at his office despite the fact he makes 100k a year.

But this kind of neglect of one of the biggest political events of the week is really inexcusable ESPECIALLY from a Mayor who has recently espoused his support of fighting crime and keeping more police officers on the street.

Still, readers of TKC are wonderfully skeptical so I want to make sure to report how important this event was . . . We should note that ALMOST EVERY OTHER PROMINENT POLITICO AND CIVIC LEADER IN KANSAS CITY ATTENDED THE PRECIOUS DOE EVENT!!!

Let's run down the list:

  • Members of the KCPD - Detectives and officers attended the event in order to demonstrate their solidarity in the effort to fight crime.

  • Former Mayor Cleaver was in Greensburg but representatives of his office were in the crowd.

  • Governor Jay Nixon sent a proclamation from The State of Missouri in order to announce Precious Doe Day.

  • Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders was in attendance and came with a proclamation regarding Precious Doe from The County. TKC NOTE: Georgia Sanders, Mike's wife, was one of the organizers of this event . . . And with Sanders in attendance . . . Maybe that was part of Funky's reasoning to skip out on the event, rather than, say, growing up and being a man and a leader.

  • Senator Claire McCaskill sent a letter to the event and some of her regards were read aloud.

  • Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee made an appearance.

  • And Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster was in the crowd.

    It gets better/worse . . .

  • Former Jackson County Prosecutor and current Mayoral Candidate Al Riederer was in the crowd as well.

  • Sly James was in attendance and was announced as a future candidate for Mayor to the crowd.

  • Again, if the Mayor was really committed to fighting crime in Kansas City then he missed an important opportunity to network and express his commitment against violence in Kansas City -- Which is exactly why so many politicians chose to attend and send their regards to the occasion.

But that's not the end of Mayor Funky's incompetence and lack of dedication to Kansas City . . .

FUNKHOUSER WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND AT SATURDAY'S AIDS WALK AS WELL!!!

Kansas City AIDS WALK had a huge, grassroots crowd of people enthusiastic to donate their time and effort to LOCAL charities in Kansas City . . . This is yet another local event that needs the support of politicos . . . Former Mayor Kay Barnes regularly attended the event.

So, I've got to ask the question:

    WHERE WERE YOU MAYOR FUNKHOUSER!?!?!?!

Despite the protestations of his last remaining supporters, being Mayor of Kansas City is A FULL TIME JOB!!! Funkhouser not only refuses to work at City Hall without his wife but now he's not even attending important public functions that serve to unite Kansas City.

This isn't back breaking labor . . . It's about showing support and representing the community . . . Funkhouser has failed at this task and his new, expensive, Republican political consultant doesn't seem to be helping.

This weekend Kansas City was hard at work advocating and supporting causes in order to make this cowtown a better place to live . . . And in all of this, unfortunately, Mayor Funkhouser was nowhere to be found.

Where is the Funk???? Where is the Funk??? Where is the Funk???

It used to be We Want the Funk! Oops!

      Sad but true...

    2. Funk we miss you

    3. I was at Chalk Walk in Historic Northeast, and Mayor Funkhouser didn't show up! It seems that if he cared about community involvement, he would have been there.

Now I'm at home... the mayor obviously doesn't care about me, because he's not here.

Look, I don't want anyone to think I'm criticizing either event... this is America and everyone has the right to donate their time to causes they believe in..

But I think too many people have tried to associate themselves with and exploit Precious Doe... personally, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that event.

And AIDS is another controversial issue. Sure, we want to find a cure, and people should be educated about how the virus is contracted, but I'm more concerned about our mayor focusing on city issues, not international health movements.

    4. Byran has a point but the charities they supported by Aidswalk are all local.

I wonder what Jeff Roe had to say to the Funk about all this?

Is he still listening to Big Jeff? I wonder???

    6. Was Beth there?

    7. Funk's so foolish.

El Bryan.... announce yourself please! Are you Big Jeff Roe? Or some other Funkhouser apparatchik? You're not Big Jeff SImon are you?

    9. OK, let's put this in perspective.

A heart tugging, yet meaningless retrospective on a child that probably would have grown up to be Shauntay Henderson Jr. with the family she had.

Then there's a small grass roots campaign for people who have mostly exercised questionable behavior to even care about the issue.

Those events would be kinda down there on the 'ol to do list.

    10. My identity is hardly secret... in fact, it's probably frightening how much of my information is available on the internets... if you can't figure out my full name, what I look like and where I live from a simple google search, I'm not going to make it any easier for you..

I've admitted that the mayor has made many mistakes, I just think it's a waste of time to nit pick the guy, and waste money recalling him.. His heart is in the right place, and I would hardly let Tony influence me, because we all know how passionate he is about Latino issues, and Francis Semler was easily one of Funkhouser's biggest blunders..

    11. I guess Gloria wouldn't let him out of the house....

      ReplyDelete
    12. Theresa Garza was not only at AidsWalk she walked the route with her family and friends. That's what city leaders do.

      ReplyDelete
    13. So is Funk suppose to show up when some grieving parent plants flowers and a cross on the spot on the highway where their kid died? Oh wait, the parent's not there to get their face on tv or their name in the paper so it's acceptable for him to stay away.

    14. Lay off Funk4/26/09, 9:03 AM

Funk was busy completing his subaquatic performance auditing (for evil) lair deep under the placid waters of Longview Lake. From there, he and Lazy Bones plan to rule the world and exctract great wealth from us poor minions for the grandeur of Funk, Lazy Bones and Lazy Bones' even more lazy Old Man -- George "I ain't worked a lick since the BeeGees sang Rock" Blackwood.

Besides that Funk could not be there because of an old West Virginia Tradition. The last Saturday in April (if they can find anyone who can read a calendar) is always celebrated as Deflower A Close Relative Day! Funk kin race through the hollers laughing and screaming as they celebrate this West Virgina tradition.

    15. AidsWalk raises over half a million for Kansas City service groups, saving the city money. I would think that would merit a visit and a thank you from any mayor who wanted to show some leadership. Obviously that's not in his job description.

    16. Another Midtown Mom4/26/09, 10:01 AM

Yep. Got to agree with the most of the folks here. Funk had a chance to pick one event or the other and he skipped both.

What's the point of being Mayor if he doesn't even want to leave his house.

There were important people to mingle with and talk to at both of these places but the Funk just wanted to stay in Brookside.

      ReplyDelete
    17. If Funk was busy, why didn't Lazy Bones attend in his absence. Kendrick is getting paid enough to cover an event for Funk every once in a while.

      Resign Kendrick!

      ReplyDelete
    18. no one but the east side phonies gives a fuck about Precious Doe. she's dead let her rest in peace for fucks sake.

AIDS walk? how 90's. How about a motherfuckin' swine flu walk.

    19. Stop kendrick

    20. The Funk is bunk. He's not even Mayor. Can I get a copy of the recall to sign?

      ReplyDelete
    21. I followed the links and the clues to see who you are, El Bryan. Turns out your JUST A PLAIN DICK :)

      ReplyDelete
    22. Gloria should be representing the Mayor, not Blackwood. Then she would doing what spouses of Mayor's do and not being co-mayor.

      ReplyDelete
    23. An older woman with a Recall Funkhouser clipboard and petitions was walking at AidsWalk. She had access to at least some of the 3,000 people walking. Hope she got some signatures.

      ReplyDelete
    24. i was out at the city market yesterday and ran into one of the ladies who's collecting names for the anti-funk petition. she said she was getting a lot of signatures. about a half hour later i spot her leaving the market and asked her if she had got her quota for the day. she said no, that she had gotten thrown out of the city market.

now you all know where funk was. he didn't have time for precious doe or the aids walk because his crack team of nincompoops were running around town assailing the anti-funk folks and getting them thrown off of city properties.

      No small feat, that.

    27. Ah it looks like Sly has Diana Kander working the blogs for him already. That will backfire.

      ReplyDelete
    28. Maybe Funkhouser was worried about swine flu.

But about "precious Doe" -- the kid has a name. How about you respect the dead child enough to figure it out fools.

    29. Just got a tip from a friend who lives on 57th Terrace. Word is that Gloria had a breakdown about ten days ago and is "resting" at a "facility."
