I was going to title this a "
TKC EXCLUSIVE" but it's even better because it's a
KICKASS TKC TIPSTER CONNECTING THE DOTS!!!Turns out the
Mid-America Regional Council is trying to expand its reach and could help to spread Katie Horner's panic or some such . . .
Check it:
All of this info is gleaned from an interview over the weekend on
Topeka's WIBW.
Apparently . . .
A great many Topeka Tornado Sirens don't work in the cold weather . . . That wasn't so much of a problem before but with this global climate change thing, that might come into play during the immediate future . . . Also, I guess they kind of need those for other emergencies too. Needless to day, Kansas Emergency Management is in the market for new sirens.
As luck would have it, MARC is holding, regular, huge conferences in an attempt to coordinate all outdoor warning signs in the region from a central control center. They're attempting to bring more than 42 Counties under their control reaching as far as, obviously, Topeka . . . This is being touted as a spring board to expand MARC's reach.
The well-informed TKC Tipster obviously has some concerns over the plan and isn't too happy about the overall performance of MARC on other efforts involving regional cooperation.
So we'll see . . . In the meantime, Spring is almost here and for some stupid reason, I always think that when KMBC's Erin Little gets really excited about the weather . . . She's going to start ripping off her clothes.
Thank You for the information about this N.G.O. acting as if it is local government at its worst! I have come to learn that this is just the begining of the hidden story. As it turns out the Public dislikes faulse alarms. I don't blame them for this. But the public is forced to live with poor quality reporting. Why is this?
ReplyDelete1. The police, fire fighters, and other public experts never attend any storm spotter training classes put on by the National Weather Service. But the volenteer stormspotters are required to be certified every two years. So why would we want a untrained person making the investigation to see if the sirens should be activated!
2. KCTV 5 and WDAF TV 4 both had in house trained storm spotters that provided a quality free source of on the spot information that limited the rehash of hype ! These guys had their training and knew what was needing to take place. Just look back when KCK,Riverside,Gladstone were hit by mant major tornados. This should be the stanard!
If Mid-America Regional Council is involved with storm spotting and warning, we are all in real trouble. This is the agency that has only distant accountablility to the public. This is the agency that keeps backing light rail even when the Kansas City voter has said 11 times they do not want to pay for it. MARC is full of dreamers and social planners who have little ability and even less experience in governing. And by the way, they avoid the black community in some when it comes to seeking public input.
ReplyDeleteI believe that having everything under a single control is too easy to knock out in case of an emergency. I would be against this. A well placed bomb or a possible tornado direct hit or an act of God and gone in a flash goes your capability to respond region wide.
