It's still cold, nasty and kinda mean in Kansas City . . . And for the most part that's a good thing.
This kind of weather often makes me think how hard other people have it and then enjoy my own Schadenfreude regarding their misery . . . Today especially I'm filled with a depressing kind of glee given that a 150 year-old newspaper is going under while this blog has never seen more traffic . . . Neither one of us is profitable but I'm only sacrificing my spare time and don't have half the smug self-satisfaction common among most media people . . . So, while dead tree media advocates keep on hoping for change and saying that things aren't that bad . . . I don't think people at the Rocky Mountain News are going to believe them any longer.
Notice that the world isn't ending for the readers of the defunct newspaper . . . Like any demise, it's almost frightening how soon life goes on afterward . . . It's actually a bit of a blessing that things work like that . . .
So, for just a few hours I'll try to stay warm tonight while the reality of the death of dead tree media and the global economic collapse sinks in for eternal cheerleaders.
More posts on the way . . . I hope.
Stay tuned . . .
Youza bastard.
ReplyDeleteYou have some of the stupidest commenters I've ever seen (excluding me, of course).
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I don't see how we can blame the newspapers. We, the buying public, decided we didn't need them and stopped subscribing.
They did the best they could.
Actually that's a great point from Donna.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the newspaper, it's the best value out there for the money. Information from all around the world packaged nicely for 75 cents while a good computer and an internet connection will set somebody back hundreds if not thousands every year.
It's the consumers who have really dropped the ball here.
Yeah, but you don't use a computer just for news. That $25-30 Internet payment allows you to shop, read news, watch news, look at blogs, watch video and so on.
ReplyDeleteOther than a quick glance at the paper, it's most common uses include Christmas wrapping, bird-case liner and fish-wrap.
True.
ReplyDeleteThat comment was quite intelligent. If Tony's commenters seem lame from time to time, they are following his example.
I'm also use my newspaper for kindling during the winter.
We can blame the newspapers because they went from a model of journalism to being run by bean counters.
ReplyDeleteGathering news requires boots on the ground and all the major papers have closed overseas and domestic bureaus.
The Star is now outsourcing editing to India.
Where is Ambrose Bierce when you need him?
Newspapers and Windex are still the best for cleaning glass coffee tables and windows, hands down.
ReplyDeleteTony, you learned what "schadenfraude" means. Good for you, as you are its best local exemplar. Look it up!
ReplyDeleteTry to keep your tongue in your mouth, Donna.
