Pitch Layoffs could be Karma as Kansas City's least creative hipster hack Justin Kendall carries out his silly vendetta!!!

I'm not happy to see anybody lose their job . . . Except for the people at The Pitch!!!

Local Twitter users broke the story of Pitch layoffs and Kansas City Big Media still hasn't followed up.

So far all I'm hearing is rumors . . .

THEY say that Jen Chen is gone.

Somebody also told me that Ferruzza was forced to say farewell.

And some lady named Lorna Perry might have been let go.

I'm guessing that hack Justin Kendall made the cut but it wasn't because of any talent.

For months upon end the guy has been throwing hate in the direction of Alonzo Washington in one of the most clear cut cases of bias that so-called journalists always deny. Kendall has sunk to new depths with his latest snarky screed that basically reports something that doesn't exist. The Pitch prides itself on some kind of "investigative" acumen but this year the only stir they have created has been a very clever photoshop image and their usual hate directed at people with whom they disagree. Put simply, The Pitch is nothing more than a glorified blog guilty of wasting a lot of paper.

In his recent (s)plog post Kendall throws slurs at Alonzo Washington as if the guy deserved to be attacked for his stance and work against metro crime. He accuses Washington of operating "with a twist of homophobia, attention whoring and race baiting" and of course he's entitled to his childish and reactionary opinion but Kendall's arguements on the subject of race are disingenuous considering that the staff of The Pitch is one of the least diverse of any news organization in Kansas City.

With his attacks, Kendall opens himself up to a lot of questions about his actions, words and deeds as a so-called journalist.

  • HOW MANY HOMICIDES HAS JUSTIN KENDALL HELPED TO SOLVE?

  • HOW MANY MISSING PEOPLE HAS JUSTIN KENDALL HELPED TO FIND?

  • DOES JUSTIN KENDALL SPEND TIME HELPING TO PREVENT VIOLENCE IN KANSAS CITY'S BLACK COMMUNITY?

The answers are pretty obvious when it comes to a hack "reporter" like Kendall operating on a pointless and hate filled agenda and a local rag that has devolved into nothing more than vehicle for escort ads and bar listings. Kendall's record on fighting crime or helping anybody but his bar buddies is zilch in much the same way that it's mostly anonny commenters who claim to have a problem with Washington's work . . . This isn't that much of a coincidence since Kendall has a rep for trolling the Internets for story ideas (and only God knows what else) like nearly every other newsie in town.

From what I hear, The Pitch lost some pretty talented people and a few of the best freelancers in Kansas City . . . Sadly, a slimy scumbag like Kendall remains at a publication dedicated to serving nothing more than their niche market . . . Honestly, with Kendall as part of their crew, I can't see the Pitch's value over Ink any more . . . Hipster Hack Kendall can do his best to swagger jack the ethos of the Internets but in the end blogs and everything else on the Internets get only the attention they deserve . . . That's why Justin Kendall is a fancy boy struggling in a dying medium in small market while Alonzo Washington is a nationally recognized anti-crime leader embarking on a City-wide campaign to combat violence and seek crime tips.

The sarcasm and second-rate writing at The Pitch seems to have backfired as advertisers are leaving because dead tree ads don't work. Now all that remains is a bitter fancy boy like Kendall and his cheap shots at someone with a solid record of helping to make Kansas City a safer place.

Criticism of any public figure is valid and should be welcomed, even vicious mocking is to be expected . . . But these actions from a "reporter" come at the cost of print media's so-called objectivity . . . The editorial vendetta against Washington at The Pitch is not only apparent but also unwise. At a time when readership and ad rates are declining The Pitch should seek to expand their audience beyond the narrow-minded hipster community . . . Instead, Kendall's bias, pettiness and vindictive "reporting" make it clear that any disagreements from a member of the minority community will be cause for a smear campaign as the lily white publication makes even more bad decisions in what might one day be known as the last days of dead tree media.

    1. Agreed. And good call.

      It's why I surf here.

TKC is fair, balanced, and unbiased.

    2. You know how many homicides Justin Kendall has solved? You know how many missing people he's found? You know how much time he's spent trying to prevent violence?

Just as much as you, Tony.

Here's what Kendall and Washington have in common:

      1. They're both attention whores.
      2. They both think they're more important than they are.

The difference is that Kendall knows he's a hack, but at least he's a professional hack. True, he works for a failing, low-rent "alternative" rag ... but it's still a legitimate member of the Kansas City media. He's a writer and nothing else. He's not claiming to be a super hero or the black version of Gil Grissom.

Alonzo? He rips the media on his blog and refuses to give interviews with reporters, then gets pissed when the media doesn't give him "credit." He's an alleged community activist who spends more time whoring himself out and asking people to provide tips about crimes than actually walking the streets and asking questions. He lets other people do the real work, then takes credit for it, using the tips to portray himself as a crime fighter.

I don't know why you keep sucking up to this guy so much. Kendall's "snarky screed" was only a couple of hundred words long. Your long-winded missive defending Alonzo? 787. Nice.

    4. What with INK's tour de force descriptons of cum and being peed on during sex, the Pitch is really becoming more and more your grandmother's free alternative weekly.

    5. Ok, this EXACT same post is on Alonzo's blog. Did Tony steal from Alonzo?

    7. Ferruzza will still contribute, I think as a freelancer.

    8. Is Justin a bald man who draws in a hairline with a Sharpie?

      Case closed. Alonzo is insane.

    9. The Pitch backed light rail and was bias in how it covered it. The owners of the Pitch might want to avoid trying to be a promoter. The Star does that and it has hugh problems. When the Pitch listened to the community it produced some real good articles challenging the status quo or the powerful.

    10. I love Alonzo. "I refuse to talk to the media." "The media refuses to cover me because I'm black! Why won't they cover me!" "Tomato!" "Pickle!"

    11. Alonzo Washington is an ignorant douche. A fucktart.

    12. If it were not for Alonzo Washington, Mike Sanders would have the worst response to baldness in the metro area.

    13. Alonzo Washington killed my cat

    14. Isn't a "pointless and hate filled agenda" what Tony's Kansas City is all about?

      ReplyDelete
    15. Well, I say GOOD RIDDANCE to Jen Chen. I think her Night Ranger crap did much to contribute to the douchiness quotient in KC. Terrible writer to boot. But the best cut, IMO, is Lorna Perry. Everything you rant about: snarky, hipster, ignorant. That about completely sums up the whole of Lorna's character. Maybe she'll get a day job that doesn't involve writing and then she can put up yet another shitty blog on her spare time.

    17. Is that really a picture of Justin Kendall? If so, he sghould be shot on sight in an outfit like that...and those glasses!

If he is an example of the the hipster community, then there is no doubt they, as a group, are collective douche-bags. Exactly like the simpering oh-so-clever group at INK...which stINKs.

The Pitch is as irrelevant today at the Kansas Shitty Star, and hacks like Kendall and the slut who publishes INK (Laurie something..?) are getting exactly the criticism they deserve.

Does anyone really believe these two media dinosaurs have anything to offer? They engagae in coming up with vapid stories about topics that are good for nothing but shock value. One could throw Urban Times in the mix, as well. Another overwrought glossy publicatrion offering nothing of value in news. That's put out by the arrogant bitch Christina Boveri, self-appointed saviour of this shitty city. Right on, Christina, you go girl!

Kendall ia a hack journalist, and the Bitch Weakly a hack publication, but he and it have lots of company when it comes to plain vanilla publications, offering nothing of value.

It would be an insult to any parakeet to have to shit on these piles of mindless crap.

Rag on Tony. Expose these fucking asshole people for who and what they are. Frauds!!

    18. While there are some things I admire about AW (such as his help FINALLY solving the Precious Doe case), his racial bias against JoCo is overbearing and clouds his thinking...case in point? His problem distinguishing Leawood vs Lee's Summit, where a girl was shot in the face. I seriously doubt he would have went on his hate filled tirade against the 'whities' if he wasn't looking through his 'black' colored glasses.
I do admire things he's done...but he loses credibility a LOT when he does things like that. A LOT!

Perfect description of TKC, and every word ever spoken or written by Tony.

    21. Fuck the Pitch

    22. Ferruzza and Jen Chen are gone? I know the Pitch is alternative, but does that mean their business model is to lose money intentionally?

Why am I supposed to read it now? For a long-winded cover piece that is going to be summarized elsewhere if it is of any value? When I have time to kill, maybe, but that's not a consistent reason to pick it up. I suppose there is occasionally some good stuff in there, but nothing I'd consider a primary draw.

It used to be a must-read at lunch on Friday so we'd have options for the weekend. When they stopped running Night Ranger (why?), Ferruzza was the only rationale for picking it up sometimes.

Ferruzza was pretty reliable in his reviews, although some of his backstories would get a little long. When it came to reviewing food and service though -- he was usually dead on.

As for Jen Chen, simply enough, her column was entertaining. It was the counter-weight to societal douchebaggery. And what happened when Night Ranger went away? It led to worldwide economic collapse at the hands of...you guessed it...pretentious douchebags.

I hope they both are reincarnated somewhere in Kansas City.

    23. The reason restaurant critics get the quick boot, is because papers have to buy their meals and pay the writer. It ain't cheap.

      ReplyDelete
    24. I never thought of that. And how old are those photos of Ferruzza? It looks like they were taken in 1989.

      ReplyDelete
    25. Ferruzza was full time? To write ONE food column a week? Really? What did he do with his other 36 hours a week?
