Upcoming KCPD Police Car Controversy

File this under stuff that you might see or read about in the mainstream media a couple of weeks from now . . . TKC is getting word of a number of people who are concerned about KCPD policy when it comes to off duty officers working security jobs and the equipment they're using.

Apparently, the issue is that KCPD cars allegedly are part of a package deal for companies paying for security.

Again (as always), TKC has to claim ignorance on the facts related to these complaints but the point of this post is that there are folks out there pursing this matter and taking issue with what they believe to be massive waste going on in the department given that police vehicles come with tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment that they claim is literally given away to businesses hiring off duty cops.

It seems like a good question to me and something that local reporters might want to follow-up on given that Mayor Funky's budget cuts and ongoing bickering between the KCPD and City Hall have taken precedence over funds for getting more cops on the street that have long been promised to Kansas City.

Interesting.

I can see where KCMO police cars would wear out much more quickly if off-duty officers are constantly using them to make money on the side.

Most officers leave the cars idling rather than shutting them off.

Who pays for the gas?

There's more at stake then gas but that's a good question. What about the dogs, do they pay for dog training? Or is there even a fee?

What about the restaurants and gas stations that give cops free food and merchandise so they come "hang out" at these places.

Go to Chipotle at 133rd & State Line on any given day and you'll see at least 4 cops there (probably the entire south patrol). How is this not considered bribery, and what's the department's policy on that?

The only policing we get in our neighbohood is off-duty KCPD that I assume the neighborhood association hired. The drive around in squad cars. How does one know if they are on- or off-duty? If this issue gets pushed too hard, will that mean the end of the (meager) police presence we have today?

And since it seems like the only cops you can get at all in midtown are the ones you've hired for yourself, then WHY do we even have a publicly funded police department? Oh yeah, I guess somebody needs to man those DUI checkpoints...

lol. I think a lot of people are mad about the checkpoints now. I don't know why there has been a recent stir.

As for the cost of the practice that Tony pointed out. You would flip if you had any idea about the real cost.

Does anyone know an honest (clean) KC cop? Really?

Check the Velvet Dog and Zen and Power and Light district and what about the car at the Blood Bank it never moves.

The old Silo Building on Main has cars there when ever they are open is that off duty or is it on duty called for problems.

Maybe this is the way to tell where the REAL action is. Look for the off duty police cars, that is where the crowd is so crazy they need a cop off duty to keep going.

Is this for real do they really get cars with the security jobs?
If it is then Tony lets rent us a security guard with a car and have him drive us around on Saturday while we smoke a little weed. After all he's off duty and he's guarding us and might as well be driving us. Or each of us could rent one with a car and have a little tire smoking on Ward Parkway.

This is a lot of jive. You have been suckered Tony. You can not use Police property for your personal use. If they can use cars they could go duck hunting with the shotguns or take videos of their kids with the video equipment. Those Police cars are on call not with off duty Police officers. Call the Police and ask them. They'll laugh you off the wire.

Wake up folks, when do the police unions NOT get exactly what they want?

When do candidates NOT supported by Police unions win elected office?

I will give you a hint. The answer to both questions in the opposite of "always."

Shannon was on the radio talking about the fact that Police have 4 ten hour days and the cop he was talking with said that the reason for it was so they could have a three day straight time for their "extra" job.
Does that mean that they work seven days a week. when do they sleep. I guess the old answer to where is a cop when you need him ---in Kansas City they are working off duty. Great answer.

Do neighborhoods really hire off duty to take care of them. My neighborhood always gets the "Blackout" answer when we call.
