Possibly a new place for Plaza de Niños at Penn Valley

Penn Valley child-care center to close in September talks with Guadalupe Center are underway . . . Which also means that some choice downtown skyline real estate might soon be available . . . It's all about real estate kids.

  1. As a parent of a child there, a few additional facts should be noted (for anyone that cares):

The center received free rent and utilities, yet it was the highest priced center in Kansas City. The fact that they are losing money is a direct representation of mismanagement by the senior level staff there. A typical day care may have one director and a few support administrators. This place had a ton! In essence, they were attempting to employ way too many of the highest paid employees (the senior management) and the school refused to take any affirmative steps to make the necessary changes.

So now, they are going to lease the facilities and provide utilities in exchange for the grand total of $1 per year to Plaza de Ninos.

I, too, lost a spot at the infant care and we are on the waiting list at a few other places with an expected enrollment date of October 2009!

I realize nothing can be done about the closing, but the real culprit is mismanagement that was allowed to go on despite warning signs. I would also encourage any directors of Penn Valley to investigate why the school remains $300,000 in debt despite the favorable rent conditions and an increase fees last year.
