So did anybody see the Mayor today on Main?
Mayor Funkhouser will pump gas at a Midtown gas station tomorrow, Wednesday, July 23, to build support for transit alternatives. He will be at the QuikTrip at 43rd and Main St. at 10:45 a.m. filling motorists’ tanks and urging attendance at several public hearings regarding transit. The Mayor will be joined by Councilman Russ Johnson and has invited regional leaders to participate.It's a cute but completely uncreative publicity stunt. The high price of gas vs. light rail is a non nonsensical argument given that simply building light rail won't guarantee ridership as it hasn't in other cities AND it overlooks the nearly $1 BILLION price tag of even a modest light rail plan that won't transport that many people or even the vast majority of commuters in Johnson County.
I'd much rather he ride the bus instead of engage in yet another PR pose.
I didn't see it until 11am. Too bad because I would have been there, it was too close to my shop to pass up the opportunity. When was it announced? I didn't see it yesterday, but I may have missed it.

ReplyDeleteI don't care if Bush was pumping gas. There's no chance I'd go to the Quik Trip on Main unless I absolutely had to (or it would cost me $8 to go to the next gas station). That place is a mad house.

Funkhouser said during his campaign that he wouldn't do the "happy talk." I, for one, am amazed at the number of publicity stunts he has been pulling. A few weeks ago he had a barbecue at 27th and Prospect. Then he had his lap dog Johnson put on a hard hat and vest and pretend to get rid of a metal plate. Now he's pumping gas. What's next? Is he going to jump out of a suitcase and tell people to come visit Kansas City? He is simply ridiculous.
