For the most part, I think a great deal of the excitement that surrounded Independent filmmaking in Kansas City peaked during the mid to late 90's back when people came out of nowhere with great movies like Clerks or El Mariachi . . . It's odd because the distribution mechanism for Independent movies (the Internet) is so much better nowadays but completely unprofitable . . . SO that might explain the downward trend. Nevertheless, there are a lot of great outlets for local Movie Makers and the 48 Hour Film Project is a national contest on tour to a bunch of cities that might be a great excuse for local creative types to actually use their video cameras for something other than sex tapes.
