Chaos Outside of Zen!!!

They say that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions . . . Sadly, this phrase seems to apply to a Kansas City Club that started out for all the right reasons and now has become a major nuisance for Kansas City residents.
Zen is located at the north of the corner of 39th and Main (the old Grand Emporium) and upon reading a message from their owner, Stuart Salomon, I was somewhat inspired. Check it:
One year ago, I was talking to Marquise Simmons, who is a young African-American entrepreneur. He owns a security company that provides security to clubs around Kansas City. Marquise and I had a frank, open and honest conversation, about race issues, about clubs, prejudices, inner city culture, social issues and the list goes on. We told each other we were going to lay things out on the table, be honest, not dance around issues, and just try to come up with solutions to why the city had very few clubs that catered to African- Americans. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with this young man. He was articulate, intelligent, and well spoken, he did not make excuses, and we both admitted that no matter how much all of us say we do not have prejudices, or preconceived notions- we all do, all of us, black and white. What I learned from my conversations with this man made me realize something, no matter what notions we have about people from other cultures, so many barriers can be erased by simply interacting with people, by educating ourselves about others by asking them questions, and by learning about where they came from – because it may have been a very different place then where we were from.Apparently, things started well:
Marquise came to me with an idea, to start a club, which welcomed African-Americans, instead of making up excuses to exclude them.
At this point, I made a decision, I was going to take on this project. With the support of an incredible and understanding landlord, Brent Lambi, I decided that despite how many “people in the know” warned me not to do it, this project needed to be done!Again, from the looks of it, the club seemed to defy stereotypes and proved that an upscale, urban, hip-hop club could make it Kansas City proper . . . I've not only selected and commented on a few choice party pics of the visitors inside the VIP club in order to note the hottie broads the clubs hosts but also to demonstrate that at one time the club had the right idea:
I have been open three weeks, and I have seen beautiful people, People dressed up, college educated people, professionals, and articulate, well mannered people. Imagine this...they were all listening to hip-hop music . . .

Then, like all things hip-hop in Kansas City . . . It turned to crap.
REPORTS TO TKC FROM NEIGHBORHOOD SOURCES COMPLAIN THAT THE SCENE OUTSIDE OF ZEN, IN THE PARKING LOT, IS OUT OF CONTROL FROM THURSDAY THRU SUNDAY!!!
At this point it's only a matter of time until there's a shooting, from what I've heard the police aren't too quick to answer calls regarding this club. However, the police helicopter hovering above for hours upon end is a constant nuisance to the neighbors in the Main Corridor.
TKC hopes the club owners can take care of their problems quickly, before someone gets hurt and so neighbors won't be so concerned with stray bullets flying through their windows . . . The goal of a viable hip-hop club in Kansas City is noble but as of yet very few ventures have found any long-term success. Here's hoping and knowing that listening to Kanye West isn't worth risking a violent death!!!

He changed the format because he was locked into a lease and wasn't making any money.
This is from the same guy who brought you XO and Karma. Both clubs hated by the neighborhoods around them.
He doesn't care crap about who he serves, just that he is making money. I am always surprised that no one ever reports what he charges at the door. $20 to keep out the riff raff or $50 for VIP entrance.
Gee, this white boy really cares about his new found people.
A great set of knockers is universal. One Love.
Gee, if you look at the rest of their web page they have a dress code. Imagine that.
I'm typing LOLZ right now for anon 12:07...one love indeed for those blouse clowns.
This club fills a much needed niche in KC for people to go, park the Corolla and feel like playaz...
I'd hit the two blondes in the first photo, definitely have to give that a push...even though they would smell like the swisher sweets they're classily enjoying.
That black guy's shirt is getting a little long for my liking. He definitely bears watching pretty closely.
lolz. That woman next to him could kick his ass no problem considering that she's twice his size.
Tony have you ever been to Zen? Probably not, because I find it hard to believe that the police aren't too quick to answer calls to the club seeing as how there are at least 3 officers stationed outside the club Thursday through Sunday. And countless other cops patrol Westport and Main in their cars.
By saying that its only a matter of time before there's a shooting, you are only reinforcing the stereotype about clubs geared toward black people.
Actually 04:07 d-bag, that stereotype of blacks shooting up the hip-pop clubs does a pretty good job of reinforcing itself.
Oh, snap.
Why can't some people go out for a good time without becoming assholes?
Club owners run clubs to make money. They could care less about the community or race issues.
Jesus.
Don't just come by to see the club, come by and see the shut down at 3:00AM. It is Maximum styling. Police in front of a place mean OFF DUTY and everyone knows that OFF DUTY means the don't see nothing that is going on with the PATRONS noses. Police in Kansas City OFF DUTY are getting paid to "protect" the customers and the club. Fly over hover craft is an added game, makes the place look scary.

WHAT THE fuck are YOU DOING to your KEYBOARD when you type in ALL CAPS? Are you A FUCK NUT or just stupid?
"Niggaz are the reason we cant keep a new nightclub open for more than a few weeks."
Cris Rock
The sooner that place is shut down, the better. I hate to say it, but if someone wants a hip-hop club for blacks to feel "comfortable", maybe they should open it on Prospect. Hell, everyone knows the 3rd district could use the "development".
The murder last week at the Shell station at 38th and Main, I wonder if that was connected to the club...
Also, folks should come check out the ghetto car show at the Concoco station at 38th and Broadway after midnite on Fridays and Saturdays. That shit is quickly spiraling out of control. No KCPD patrol cars at all come around.
When I'm driving around anymore I now comfort myself with the knowledge that I'll never hear the bullet that kills me...
Let's all face it: We live in a segregated city. This could serve to everyone's advantage. Take a look at 18th and Vine before integration... I would never be allowed to open a Grand Emporium on 18th and Vine, and no one should be able to have a gangsta hip-hop club in midtown.
How can the neighborhood complain when you have crack heads and hookers walking up and down the block all day. Shouldn't they work on cleaning up the neighborhood before blaiming all the issues on a "Hip Hop Club." People were complaining before Zen opened up when the Madrid was catering to a Latino audience. The same complaint was made about Salsa night @ the Madrid and Rock Shows there before Zen opened up. Maybe the neighborhood should work on cleaning up their own issues before blaiming the problems on nightlife in the area. The city doesn't want the urban demographic at the P&L until the fall or Winter when all of the "proper" people realize that they are broke and recession hits their pocketbook.
"crack heads and hookers walking up and down the block all day" is vastly different than three AM gun fire, windows rattling from sound systems, and cars driving on the sidewalk and front yard. It is the difference between Zombies and Terrorists.
I've been there and seen cops not getting out of their cars to do their job.
Private security guards are just know nothing off duty cops making sure the club owner doesn't have any trouble.
This neighborhood has always had its fair share of crap long before Zen. What about the crappy crack head apartments accross the street?
This is the same thing the neighbors in the houses behind the club said about the salsa club down the street and even about the Grand Emporium from time to time. They bought property in an entertianment disctirct, get used to it.
There have always been shootings at that gas station on Main, even back when it was Grand Emporium.
And with all the white folks Tony posted pics of I don't see how this is a black club, unless you mean black guys hooking up with white bimbos
I had the opportunity to visit this club last Saturday after leaving a severely segregated P&L District. Upon entering I didn't feel like the crowd was very warm or happy. Everyone seemed dull. Let's face it, clubbing just isn't the same anymore. It's time to find better ways to have fun, more inviting places. One can go to a bowling alley to listen 2 good music and socialize. I am a minority full time student, and the weekend I spent club hopping Saturday makes me realize more that more individuals need new social outlets other than dancing or drinking in a club...hiphop or not.
In the "She's Smokin" photo, if you took your head out of your A-- you would see that is a cell phone, not "smokes"
People can be so ignorant at times. Zen was the shit when the doors first opened. But since then they've softened up on the type of crowd that they let thru the door. The following is what did it for me, as far as going to Zen: a gangbang in the mens restroom! This incident has nothing to do with it being a black club, cause white people do lines in the stall at Blonde. But that did it for me. The fact that you have women going in and out of the mens room all night, cause they cant use their own facilities is ridiculous. But again, if they go back to the "original" attitude at the door...hell, i'll be a regular!
there has been a bar / nightclub there since 1946,,,,,,so who came first the "whiney" neighbors trying shakedown business owners or the business that employs, entertains and pays taxes,,,sales, income ,property,,,
