Even better alternatives to silly, expensive and impractical regional light rail

Just when I'm about to write a scathing post about all of the evils of Johnson County and their residents . . . They come up with a really good idea.
The county’s Board of Commissioners on Thursday gave the go-ahead to plan an express bus service that would run on the shoulder of I-35 when congestion gets bad.

The I-35 service is part of a long-term plan that calls for increasing transit spending in the county by about $40 million a year in 10 years . . . The plan outlines broad transit needs, including additional midday and late-evening service, better service within the county, improved connections to Kansas City buses and increased service to the Country Club Plaza.
But it gets better, the truly visionary part of the new plan is that it completely contradicts greedy Kansas City people only concerned about generating another pricey public project that will fund architectural firms, construction companies and politicos. Check it, JoCo just comes out and says regional light rail won't work:
The study recommended bus service over commuter rail or light rail because it was less expensive and was predicted to attract many more riders.

The service, also known as bus rapid transit, would cost roughly $49 million to start and $5 million a year to operate.

Commuter rail on existing freight tracks was priced at $320 million, while light rail could cost as much as $1 billion in capital expenses alone.
This is basically the bureaucrats and the decision makers in Johnson County sending a subtle but clear message to Mayor Funky: REGIONAL LIGHT RAIL ISN'T GOING TO WORK. The bus is simply a better idea which is what so many people have said to Mayor Funky from the start, sadly Kansas City's Mayor is too stubborn to listen.

Comments

  1. Regional lightrail would work if only other cities or towns would hop on.

A starter line down Main Street is for the white people.

    Commonly known as "whiterail".

  2. The starter line will include an east leg on Linwood or Clever II.

Paintman, sounds like you are proposing segregation. That seems like a rather unenlightened suggestion.

  3. it'll never make it to linwood or 47th Street.

It'll go bankrupt in the first year.

City has always lied. Why stop now?
