A blog for the STL Post-Dispatch asks: What if a visitor to a political blog leaves a disparaging comment about a public official? It's basically a stupid question from people who don't know a lot about the Internet or the laws that govern it given that according to this link to a news story I found from lockergnome: "The US Court of Appeals For the First Circuit has reaffirmed that the same broad protections that protect web sites also protect bloggers and message board operators from being sued for what their user’s posted."
Put simply, it's very sad that a girl from Missouri killed herself but making Internet chatter illegal for everyone in the Show-Me state isn't the solution, probably unconstitutional and it won't bring her back. The new Missouri "law" is a joke and now it's being employed to slow down political conversation in blogs across the State - I understand the effort given that the Internets is the last bastion of free speech and a force that already led to the Governor's Chief of Staff being booted.
So, spiteful, vindictive, Internet trolls should feel free to slander away . . . TKC wants you to keep it legal for your own sake but politicos who want to claim that they're being "bullied" on the Internets should really step down - Starting with Gloria Squitiro who is reportedly the biggest bully in the Mayor's office.
