Flag display controversy in WyCo!!!

My uncle Jack is a great guy, a Vet and also very picky about how the American Flag is displayed.

A recent story by Tess Koppelman highlights a tense debate over proper etiquette concerning the display of the American flag.
To honor their fallen brother, firefighters all across Wyandotte County have been flying flags at half-staff but one city's mayor is refusing to participate saying that it breaks the law.

The long line outside of St. Anthony's Church in KCK shows how well-liked Tluscik was. The 48-year-old was a proud firefighter and his fellow firefighters have been honoring him since he died last week by lowering flags to half staff. But in Edwardsville, flags aren't lowered because the mayor says it's against the law.

"I understand and I sympathize with the firefighters in wanting to show their appreciation and respect for a fallen firefighter although we won't break any codes of our nation to do that," Edwardsville mayor Heinz Rodgers said.
The Firemen wouldn't go on record but they did tell Koppleman that they were "angry" over the Mayor's decision.

What do you d-bags think? Remember that Kansas City violated the same kind of flag code in order to honor the late Lamar Hunt - Who is mentioned in the Warren Report and comes from a very rich family that has a (weak) connection to the Kennedy Assassination:
In much the same way that contemporary reactionaries were criticized following the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 for having incited terrorism through their antigovernment rhetoric, in the days following the assassination of John Kennedy, H. L. Hunt was castigated publicly. The New Republic editorialized that Hunt's last radio broadside on Kennedy, broadcast the morning of the assassination, was "[t]he kind of program . . . that the brooding Oswalds of the left- or right-wing listen and sometimes act on."

Ward's report -- and by extension the KGB's best estimate on "Who killed JFK?" -- probably derived from a discovery made by the FBI in late November that tied the Hunt family to the events in Dallas. In Jack Ruby's notebook, bureau agents found the name "Lamar Hunt," H.L.'s second son from his first marriage. By the time Ward's report reached Moscow, the distinction between Lamar and H. L. Hunt was lost. Indeed, for a while the US government wondered whether the Lamar Hunt connection was significant. On December 17 the FBI interviewed Lamar Hunt about Jack Ruby. Hunt denied ever having known Ruby. In jail Ruby agreed.
It's a tough call . . . Respecting the flag vs. honoring fallen firefighters . . . Somehow I think scantily clad women wrapped in an American-flag-inspired- design (which I think is also against the rules) should promote some kind of compromise.

Comments

  1. The report says that they aren't really rules but guidelines. The Mayor should have lowered the flag to honor the firemen since they contribute so much with their service.

  2. im a viet nam vet and according to the us government states that the flag is only lowered by the request of the president of the united states who then passes it on to the governors of the states. so i admire the edwardsville mayor for following the flag code. now then can lower and raise the state flag all they want but not the us flag. anyone who has served this nation bleeds when the see this flagant abuse of the flag.

  3. A thorough reading of the Flag Code does not preclude the lowering of the flag to half-staff except by presidential order. A presidential order does require that all flags be flown at half-staff and usually for an extended period of time, normally 10 or 30 days depending on the honoree. The lowering of the flag in the instance referenced here would not violate the Flag Code.

  4. If Lamar had Hunt wanted John F. Kennedy dead, he would have hired an incompetent manager and clueless coach to do the job, which means that Jack would be alive and well reading girlie magazines and drinking Heineken in some well-heeled retirement home today.

  5. It is somewhat concerning that the mayor of Edwardsville can't distinguish guidelines from laws.

  7. i admire the mayor of edwardsville for standing up for the flag. they can do whatever they want with the city and state flag. but the us flag is only lowered by order of the president. therefore the unthinking lemme is not correct in his assetment to the flag code. i suggest that he look it up and have it translated.

  12. This mayor sounds like an idiot.

  13. I did look it up. Nothing in the flag code precludes the lowering of the US flag on a jurisdictional basis without a presidential order.

  14. Lemming didn't look hard enough.

    Respect the flag idiot.

  17. the lowering of the flag by mayor reardon as i found out the the unified government says that there administrator has the authority to do that. i called the vfw headquarters and the kansas gov. and neither one has given them permission to lower the us flag. i wish the government would introduce a law fining the cities that choose to lower the us flag on a moments notice. as far as the fire fighter being honored they should have lowered the city flag for him

WTF? Are you on drugs? Breathe. Stop. You will get outed if you keep stroking this dead horse. We all know who you are, mental case.
Your anger will get you in trouble sooner or later, please consider counseling. Tony and his mom aren't to blame for your problems, you are. Now step away from the keyboard, before you get a CAP(ital) in your ass.
