Phil Kline don't live here anymore

Last night Channel 5 dropped a bombshell on Johnson County District Attorney Phil Kline.

Turns out Kline doesn't really live in Johnson County and, at least in spirit, he is allegedly breaking the residency requirements of his office.

In other words . . . Phil Kline is very much like an illegal immigrant to Johnson County!!!
After weeks of staking out a crummy apartment--located on top of a storage facility owned by Phil Kline supporters where he pays $400 per month--KCTV5 never once saw Mr. Kline or his wife come home to the apartment.

Then after following Mr. Kline and his wife on camera numerous times from work they found both Phil Kline and his wife driving to Topeka and staying at a residence they own there. His wife also regularly picks up his daughter from a Topeka school and she too stays at the Topeka home with her parents.

Kline and his wife Deborah both changed their voter registration to Johnson County just before Kline ran for district attorney, and both of their cars are registered to a Johnson County address in Stilwell, Kan. – a storage facility south of Overland Park, Kan.

The law requires this to be Kline's "residence," and if it's not, he must "resign" or be subject to "removal from office."

"I would say that people snickered at the thought that he lived in Johnson County," the insider said.

KCTV5 News caught up with Kline as he was leaving the Johnson County courthouse one afternoon and asked him about where he lived.

He pointed out that he owned a home in Topeka, but that he also had the apartment in Stilwell.

KCTV5 News frequently found his wife's car, which was also registered to the Stilwell address, at the home Phill Kline owns in Topeka.

KCTV5 spent weeks waiting and watching for him to show up there -- more than a dozen times early in the morning and late at night -- but not once did KCTV5 News see Kline in Stilwell.

On a recent evening, KCTV5 News did, however; catch Kline and his wife leaving the office heading home to Topeka. The next morning KCTV5 News watched as the two of them left their Topeka house and drove to the turnpike.

Later Deborah Kline, who also claims to live in Stilwell, returned to their home to pick up her daughter and take her to school in Topeka.
Yep, according to KCTV 5, Phil Kline is definitely (allegedly) falsifying his employment information so clearly he must be deported to Mexico!!!

Also, the story revealed that the guy isn't working a lot of hours for somebody who makes nearly 150k. According to KCTV5's calculations the guy only works 29 hours a week at his office. I'm not a lawyer but I've seen The Firm a few times and I think that constitutes over-billing.

Ironically, I wonder how the people of Johnson County will react to this story given that they weren't too picky about jurisdictions when they swamped local media outlets with their (stupid) opinions on the Semler issue but had no legitimate stake in Funkhouser's rebuke of KC's Latino Community and the economic impact Kansas City would face by being (accurately) labeled a racist town.

Now that an out of town anti-abortion activist is carrying out his agenda on JoCo's dime I can only hope the folks in that part of Kansas will become more cognizant of jurisdictional issues in much the same way that KC area Latinos NOW realize that our population in Kansas City has been gerrymandered in order to thwart our voice in the local electoral process.

Again, this is a good scandal and a nice scoop but the way KCTV5 was hyping the story I was sure that the details would be on par with the Trent Lott story and allegations of a ghey sex scandal . . . Thankfully, it was nothing that sordid and just the typical ulta-conservative hypocrisy accompanied by allegations of wrongdoing.

And because of this scandal I can't seem to get seem to get the 1978 classic by Rose Royce "Love don't live here anymore" out of my head.

  2. Tony,

I missed KCTV's story. I saw the build up, however. This is quite interesting. Yeah, he needs to be deported. Just think, they slammed the Bishop (McFadden-Weaver) for trying to hook up a crooked deal so she could live in Lee's Summit.

Now, this non-racist city should squat on Kline.

  3. Topeka? I thought "L'il Philly" lived under a rock -- in an exclusively white, Nazarene neighborhood in Olathe.

  9. I can't believe people are quick to shoot the messenger. It's not like KCTV forced Kline to violate the spirit of the law.

  10. Regardless of alleged hidden agendas behind the KCTV 5 story it doesnt change the facts. Those charged with upholding the law are expected to abide by same.

  11. It seems 'odd' to me that someone sworn to uphold the law feels he's above the law. Kline shouldn't have been given this job in the first place. Now he's been proved to be a cheat and a liar and made his wife a liar as well. Phil, go back to Topeka and STAY there. You are a disgrace to the law profession and the state of Kansas.
