In a racist town, nearly every word is a potential land mine
A lot of folks adamantly disagreed with me when I pointed out that Kansas City is a racist town.
It's unpleasant to realize the harsh and ugly realities of any city; like the fact that (no matter how expensive) there's no place to get decent seafood in this town.
However, it's clear that racial tension abounds in the Kansas City area and in one instance after the next the effects of it can be felt.
A fantastic report on Fox4 recently highlighted an interesting story in which it's revealed that even saying the word 'noose' is a no-no in some parts of the metro.
There's apparently been some racial tension in the band at Lee's Summit West, specifically on the drum line. Students were talked to a couple weeks ago because both the black and white kids were using the "n word" and the band director told them to stop. But then talk about a noose landed a couple kids in big trouble.Here's the gist of the noose story:
Some kids on the drum line said they were talking about the best knots to use to tie up the drum equipment.
A student was asked if he knew how to tie a noose.
The student in question, an Eagle Scout, said he knew how to tie it, but told his friends he wouldn't because he didn't want to get in trouble.
Later, a black student on the drum line told the teacher he was offended.
The student who was the subject of the story was later accused of using a racial slur, having a racially charged conversation and simply saying the word 'noose' then he was suspended for 10 days.
And here I thought getting suspended just for speaking Spanish was a bit extreme.
Thing is, in a tense atmosphere any silly gesture in order to diffuse tension seems reasonable. The only problem is that these half measures usually end up causing additional problems which only add to the complexity of the first issue . . . In much the same way that gambling addicts raise the stakes in order to get their money back or skanks return to the bar scene and hope to find a new man who will treat them better.
In the end, this story is NOT ONLY about the ad hoc and utterly indecipherable code of conduct enforced in order to create a politically correct atmosphere BUT ALSO the climate of hatred that exists in the metro area which amplifies any hint of divisive language and makes dirty talk among interracial couples that much more exciting. We DO have free speech in this country. That kid who was suspended for saying the word noose should sue the school.
This whole pc thing is crap. I will not be intimidated and neither will millions of other Americans.

Who is WE? Admittedly, if true, this is stupid but you're assuming that all the facts are in a news story. Have you ever thought that maybe the kid DID use racial slurs and is using political correctness as an excuse or a cover? It makes a good story but the truth is you don't know for a fact what really happened.

Be nice if KC had some black leadership to stand up and say something about this.

Wow. I learned how to tie a hangman's noose in Boy Scouts too. I didn't learn from the leaders, it was just something that we learned from the older scouts. I lived in Whitesville, USA and it never occured to me that nooses were only for black people. I just wanted to learn it becuase it was an 'illegal' knot, which I thought was humerous.
Jesus! Has everyone forgot about the Wild West days where they ONLY hung WHITE people?
Why do all whinny assed minorities always scream racism when they hear something that sounds a lot like a cash register or a " I can make this all about me" and not the issue.
If I was this kid, I would just shoot myself in the face with a 12 gauge. That way he becomes a martyr for the anti PC brigade and that will more than likely do more then any law suit, criminal action or strongly worded letter to the editor.
So go ahead band geek...get the gun, taste the flavor and we'll march in your name screaming anti PC rhetoric every year! Our kids will get the day off from school, racial slurs will lose all meaning, we'll all fuck till were the same color, and then when the space aliens come down to kills we will have already bonded as a planet and as one we will kick their asses and send them packing back through the milky way.

Every town and city in the nation is "racist" if the only qualifier is a few racist residents.

I hesitate to post a comment on here when race is the issue. If a non racist white person disagrees with someone who has evoked a racism claim, that white person will more often as not be accused of being racist. That being said I take exception to TKC calling KC a racist town. Are there racists in KC ? You bet, and they come in all skin tones, and from every corner of the city. But painting KC as a racist town is just plain incorrect. TKC is of course only pointing the finger at the white population most of whom are not racist. Its unfair and incorrect just as blaming crime on the black community or branding all latino's as illegals or immigrants is wrong. The truth is nobody knows what was said or the intent behind it other than the kid who said it. You dont have to look far to find a racist , just look at the comments in here. But Tony you also go out of your way to incite these reactions, probably in part just for shits and giggles and in part to drive home your contention that KC is a largely racist town. the truth is that most normal americans have moved beyond the race issues and judge people on character rather than skin tone.
A word is only powerful if people make it so.

I've got a crazy idea, how about these schools enforce their codes of conduct and stop letting these little thug wannabees call each other "nigger"?

Please. With all the racial slurs, why bother with noose? If this person wanted to let fly with hate speech, 'nigger' or 'porch monkey' are a lot more effective.
It's not the fault of the white community that the "people of color" can't come up with anything better than "cracker" for a white hate word.

Somehow, I doubt he was referring to the Truman and Woodland area.
The Lee's Summit School District does have some screwy rules.
My Daughter was once given detention for allowing herself to be hit by another student.
The girl who hit her was suspended, but if you get right down to it, in the Lee's Summit School District there is no such thing as an innocent victim.
