KANSAS CITY LOSES LA RAZA CONVENTION!!! MAYOR FUNKY'S PRINCIPLES COST THIS TOWN $5-7 MILLION!!!
It's official. The National Council of La Raza Convention won't show up in Kansas City because of Mayor Funky's stubbornness.
The rumor that I hear is that Mayor Funky's last ditch offer to keep the convention was an 11th hour plea that he would make a public apology for appointing Semler but would continue to stick by his choice.
For fans of this blog, you might be a little sad that TKC was wrong about La Raza coming here and rumors that this was all a political ploy . . . That's the last time I disagree with my mama because once again it turns out she was right . . . For the record, she probably also had a point when she urged me not to drop out of dental school. In the end, if this error bothers you more than my constant typos and frequent errors in grammar then I urge you (beg you) to stop reading this blog. But what's more important??? Some dumbass joke blogger being inaccurate OR the news that:
MAYOR FUNKY'S STUBBORNNESS HAS COST KANSAS CITY MILLIONS!!!
Right now both Mayor Funky and Latino leaders are keeping to their no comment agreement. But I'm sure statements will soon be forthcoming.
In the end the NCLR followed the recommendation of LOCAL LATINOS and voted unanimously to forgo Kansas City.
And as I noted previously, this thing isn't even close to being over . . . In fact, now it's going to get uglier as the national NAACP has stated publicly that they will consider NCLR's decision in weighing whether or not to come to KC and talk of an NCAA boycott is circling as well.
And all of the blame for this mess AND THE MONEY IT'S COSTING KANSAS CITY rests on the skinny shoulders of Mayor Funkhouser who has brought this town to a horrible impasse with his inability to compromise and take the minority leadership in this town seriously or deal with them in a respectful manner.
Really, if you care about the economic future of Kansas City or the perception that's obviously circulating that Kansas City is a racist town then this issue just became really important and it's about to get a whole lot uglier.
Therefore, tonight's podcast will be dedicated to Kansas City's loss of millions of dollars . . .

I never know what to believe when I see figures on what a convention will bring to this town in revenue, but we are losing more than 5 to 7 million bucks. We are losing more than money.

Those who laugh off what a "bigotville" image might mean to Kansas City should remember that The Edmund Pettus Bridge did not become a positive tourist attraction for at least 30 years after Selma got all that free publicity for "standing up for a principle."
I admit, I did not vote for Funkhouser because I do not like protest candidates in politics. Their decision making capacity has rarely been tested. Their willingness to admit a mistake and to put things right are great unknowns. Such was the case with a protest candidate known as Funkhouser.
Now we know Funkhouser's judgment was faulty. He should have never listened to his wife and appointed Semler. He SHOULD have listened to City Council and rid himself of Semler right away. He should have never listened to his wife and rejected Semler's resignation.
Funkhouser is an embarrassment and Gloria Squitiro is a menace.

Dear Mr. Mayor,
I applaud your standing up to bullying special interest groups such as La Raza. While I live in the Eastern part of Missouri I was pleased to read that LaRaza would not be gracing our state with their presence. Organizations looking for a convention location would do well to consider KC as a city that supports American values, personal freedoms and doesn't succumb to extortion of it's government or it's employees.
The grossly overstated income from such a convention is like the grossly overstated attendance figures at left wing rallies and has little basis in reality. A smart convention planner would do well to consider LaRaza's spot for and FFA, NRA, police/fireman, VFW, Shriner, group and no doubt receive a warm welcome from most of the KC population. I only wish STL had a mayor that resisted blowing in the political wind.

I concur with Frank Hughes that it was disappointing that the local Hispanic leaders didn't push harder to support keeping La Raza convention in KC. They alone had the best opportunity to put a good face on this no win situation. I am also disappointed in Rev. Thompson for not standing up in support of keeping the SCLC 08 convention here . Rev. Thompson receive tremendous support and benefits from KC. And without financial support from KC,the SCLC convention would be in deep trouble Hoepfully Rep. Cleaver will knock some since into "fuzzy" on this one.
I think the blame falls equally on the hispanic leaders who have gone out of their way to blow this non issue out of proportion and to Semlar who should have removed herself out of loyalty to the mayor. At the end of the day I think the Mator reacted properly, he protected the freedom of a US citizen to belong to a group and to speak freely and he did not allow a small minority of the KC population, many who are here illegally to dictate policy or to intimidate through racist rhetoric.

While it was probably ego-enhancing to get whistled at in Spanish, my roommate and I dreaded walking by that park. Our car was stolen a total of 6 times in 4 years.
