Body Snatchers soon to come to Union Station. Does Kansas City have a conscience?

For a long time on this blog, I've joked, engaged in sarcasm and brought light to the fact that the lives of people of color just aren't valued in Kansas City.

In many instances I've pointed out that Eastside homicides are treated casually while violence involving white people garners greater attention and subsequently points out the agenda setting function of media which often reinforces and reflects the bigotry and prejudices of their audience.

Time after time with crude jokes I've pointed out that the media frenzy over the fate of affluent, attractive missing white females is simply a manifestation of the missing white woman syndrome that affects media throughout the nation. Invariably, some d-bag will bring up Precious Doe while failing to realize the disparity of the half dozen names of missing or dead affluent white women who have dominated the headlines since Alonzo Washington led the effort to solve the case of Erica Green.

Well, it turns out that the joke is on me considering that UNION STATION IS SET TO REVEAL A DISGUSTING EXHIBIT THAT PROVES ONCE AND FOR ALL THAT KANSAS CITY DOESN'T VALUE THE LIVES OR DIGNITY OF PEOPLE OF COLOR!!!

The "Bodies Revealed" exhibit has a controversial history that was recently glossed over by Kansas City's paper of record but the facts regarding the exhibit CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE that it is a DISGUSTING DISPLAY WHICH PRIMARILY EXPLOITS THE CORPSES OF ASIAN PEOPLE WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD A SAY IN HOW THEIR BODIES WOULD BE DISPLAYED AFTER THEIR DEMISE.

Of course the medical director of the display claims that the remains of the folks in the exhibit all died from natural causes and gave their consent but it is then revealed to us that the bodies come from China which isn't exactly known for its honesty with American officals or its ethics when it comes to the health of their people . . . Put simply, it's not a free country . . . China is a authoritarian Communist regime and anyone willing to take their word on how these bodies were shipped out of their country is being willfully ignorant.

There are plenty of objections against this kind of sickening display that is essentially racist and ethnocentric. . . Here are a few:

  • The officals for this exhibit, in my opinion, aren't being forthright about the circumstances that surround these bodies being acquired. The New York Times notes that that there is "little government oversight, an abundance of cheap medical school labor and easy access to cadavers and organs" when it comes to how the cadavers are obtained in China.

  • The trade of these bodies has been marred by controversy and criminal charges against several doctors who deal with supplying corpses for these shows according to a recent story featured on NPR.

  • The display is not certified by The Missouri State Anatomical Board . . .IF the purpose of this exhibit is educational then some state certification should be required. These displays often skirt around these kind of important medical and educational rules and are in fact governed under rules concerning "ART DISPLAYS" and not subject to CDC stamps and death certificates that are required for medical cadavers. It should be noted that this is not an educational, non-profit display . . . THESE PEOPLE ARE MAKING MONEY BY DISPLAYING DEAD BODIES AS ART EXHIBITS!!!

  • Think about all of the weird, strange and nasty diseases lurking around every dark corner of the world . . . Then consider that in San Francisco the corpses on display started leaking. Again, with no regulation from the CDC, you can't exactly guarantee this thing is safe.

  • This town is in a quest to be more like Seattle, well it turns out that town is moving to legislate against these kind of displays and wants to require written authorization to display human remains for a commercial purpose.

  • Strictly on a human rights front, the objections to this kind of exploitation has been far too numerous to just casually gloss over . . . Blogger and writer Robin Kirk has a great collection of stories on a blog regarding how others united in order to work against this very kind of display.

  • Finally, let's not forget that the Chinese Government has lied about their medical practices for years. China was harvesting organs from live Falun Gong prisoners to meet rising demand not so long ago. A recent case at the Carnegie Science Center highlighted this controversy and most people have come to the logical conclusion that the Chinese government's integrity is questionable.

  • And sitting back and looking at this thing, what's clear to me is that this exhibit is not an educational display; IT'S A MACABRE CARNIVAL ACT. Hell, it's classified as a damn art exhibit.

In my opinion, there are two reasons that folks from Kansas City aren't up in arms . . . Yet. It's a question of racism and ethnocentrism really . . . If these were largely American or white bodies on display there would be an uproar . . . What if the bodies belong one of those missing white women that the media obsesses over? Sadly, people don't identify with imprisoned dissidents, sick people or the very poor from rural China who are going to be displayed for Kansas City's amusement.

Secondly, bringing this exhibit here is a cynical move on the part of the promoters of this event . . . They mistakenly believe that folks in KC aren't capable of doing a Google search, checking Wikipedia or realizing that there are serious human rights controversies involving this creepshow. The Star and any local media who don't give credence to objections to this exhibit are seemingly complicit in what amounts to a cover-up that is attempting to keep Kansas City ignorant as to the drastic opposition to this type of exploitation that comes from around the country and around the world.

First and foremost this blog has always been about parody and satire but I REALLY feel that if this disgusting, immoral and inherently racist and ethnocentric display comes to Kansas City then it is essentially the death nell for any kind of progress on the subject of racial harmony, real diversity or acknowledgment of basic human rights in this town.

    Why?

Because if folks don't care about the exploitation of dead bodies and Asian people who might want to bury their lost relatives which is soon to take place in one of the centerpieces of Kansas City, then they obviously those same people will never care about the fate of anyone else but themselves.

    Put simply:

The exhibit of these bodies isn't education, it's exploitation.

Clearly if these bodies were white, American or belonged to someone you loved who might not have given their consent then your reaction might be different.

This carnival act doesn't speak to the values of KC and I can only hope that a few people who have a conscience will move to prevent this exhibit from coming to Kansas City in what has to be the most disgraceful attempt to turn a profit for a floundering local attraction ever undertaken.

I'm hoping that folks will contact the Mayor, their council person and Union Station with their objections.

I hope that Kansas City thinks better of exhibiting the death and exploitation of other HUMAN BEINGS simply for profit.

    1. I'll bet that you're just losing sleep about the sources of those bodies, huh Tony?
Tony feels too deeply, and hurts too much. He's so much more advanced than you or I.

      ReplyDelete
    2. Thanks for the information Tony. This is probably the best post you've ever written.

      ReplyDelete
    3. Good grief does your bitching and race baiting never end?

      ReplyDelete
    4. What you forgot to mention is that not everyone has the same beliefs as you and your catholic thug squad Tony. Some people don't think whatever the Vatican tells them. This exhibit is about science and just like most mexican catholics you only show your ignorance by obeying every edict handed down to you by your pedophile priests.

      ReplyDelete
    5. Of course! This is being protested by the Catholics!
Say, did they ever decide that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to keep condoms out of Afrika?

      ReplyDelete
    6. I love the way that a brand new CD looks the first time you put it on the shelf. How it kind of sticks out among all the older ones.

      ReplyDelete
    7. Excuse me, if you knew anything about what the fuck you were talking about you'd realize that the Vatican's position on condoms is slowly changing.

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/pope/story/0,,1954759,00.html

And, in fact, it was the Evangelical Christian president Bush who has used U.S. taxpayer money to promote abstinence education that doesn't work in lieu of condoms in Africa.

Get your fucking facts straight and then go learn how to spell.

      ReplyDelete
    8. So THIS is your lame complaint for today Tony and your way to bring down Kansas City while keeping Union Station from being profitable.

      Good luck dipshit.

Thank science nobody in Kansas City pays attention to you.

      ReplyDelete
    9. That doesn't change the fact that the official Catholic position in Africa was to teach that condoms don't prevent AIDS. This while they were hiding their molester priests. This makes them, and you good sir... a D-BAG.

      ReplyDelete
    10. Wow, this is a new low for you. What a fucking idiot.

      ReplyDelete
    11. Tony you are a moron. Stop trying to sabotage Kansas City's success.

      ReplyDelete
    12. Tony, the Sliced Chinamen exhibit is a huge coup for Union Station! Why can't you get behind that?

      ReplyDelete
    13. Good job providing news sources and accurate information. It's honorable that you're trying to present evidence to back up your claims. Thanks Tony for posting this and I'm certain that once more people find out about this they'll organize to stop this nonsense.

      ReplyDelete
    14. I feel bad that I didn't know any of this.

      ReplyDelete
    15. I wasn't going to see the exhibit but thanks to you, I'll go twice.

      ReplyDelete
    16. Old news. Thanks for playing kid.

      ReplyDelete
    17. Strange that the media hasn't mentioned any of these stories or controversies in other towns.

I for one don't plan on going not because I think it's racist but just because it's disgusting.

      ReplyDelete
    18. When and if you stop expressing your blatant hatred and disrespect for women (of ANY race) then you will be within your rights to talk about bigotry. You are such hypocrite!

      ReplyDelete
    19. Thanks for the shout out! In fact, there has been a lot of coverage and protest of the various "Bodies" exhibits now touring the world. A great resource is nobodies4profit.org, set up by NC mom Sarah Redpath. My objection is a rights-based one -- these people never gave their consent to be used in this way and China has a horrible record on human rights, raising serious (and unanswered) questions about how bodies were obtained.

      ReplyDelete
    20. Anonymous 5:55

That is a great point. Let's not forget that Bush and Reagan both have intentionally ignored the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Please don't bash catholics because of Tony's idiotic race bating. I've seen this exhibit and its incredible.

      ReplyDelete
    21. I'm suddenly hungry for Chinese food.

      ReplyDelete
    22. In fact you have offered no evidence that these people did not consent to have thier bodies used in this way. Funny how a certain tubby mexican blogger decries these horrific alleged human rights issues all the while posting sexist photos and making racist remarks. Way to go T!!!!

    24. Everything in US households comes from China but now we're just OUTRAGED about an exhibit. Bwahahahaha!!!!
Oops, gotta run. My Free Tibet bumper sticker needs replacing.

      ReplyDelete
    25. This wouldn't have happened if the black guy had been elected mayor! Funky kills Chinamen and slices them for kicks!

      ReplyDelete
    26. Desecrating dead bodies so we can all "ooh" and "aah" over them... so sad to watch the devolution of our civilization. We had so much potential!

      ReplyDelete
    27. We look the other way when viable fetuses are killed and are just HORRIFIED about this exhibit. You liberal D-bags really crack me up with your childlike thought processes. Bwahahahahahaha!!!!

      ReplyDelete
    28. What's the big deal? It's not like they don't have like a billion or so to spare?

    30. You people are missing the point entirely. This exhibit is a once in a lifetime chance for local school children to really see up close just how gross and freaky the human body really is.

      ReplyDelete
    31. If we allow this exhibit to come to town then we are worse than Hitler. At least he didn't show off the dead people when he was finished. Sheesh.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Does anyone know a good chinese restaurant in the midtown area?

      ReplyDelete
    33. I'm pretty stoked about this exhibit. AND the Body Worlds exhibit is opening in St. Louis this Friday.

Hell, the people "exploited" knowingly donated their bodies to such a thing. It's not like the guy snatched their corpses out of a funeral home or anything.

      ReplyDelete
    34. I got a feeling that if you want to be buried over there in China all you have to do is dig a hole.

Look at it this way, at least all those small Asian peepees wont spur your jealousy.

      ReplyDelete
    35. Tony - I'm officially off your bandwagon. You are a moron.

      ReplyDelete
    36. Man, fuck dead Chinese. Lets slice them all up. All they do is burn the dead over there. I'm sure piling them all up, dousing them with lighter fluid and torching them is a more humane and dignified way to deal with your dead than getting your cut on and slapping them in an exhibit.

      ReplyDelete
    37. I think you are dead on with this one, Tony. I think the 'bodies displayed' exhibits are crude at best.

You correctly highlight the joke of 'giving your body to science' in communist china, as well as the fact that this is not an anatomical art exhibit, but a moneymaking enterprise.

Cadaver study is crucial to medical education and can even teach pre-medical students things about anatomy. Cadavers are useful. Plasticized peasants with flayed organs on display for KC's moneyed class is not.

let the dead bury the dead, and let who is to be fed- be fed.

We have empty mouths to feed, don't bother with gawking at the deceased.

    39. A Bodies exhibit is currently in Pittsburgh at Carnegie Science Center - their website has a ton of information about the exhibition and where the bodies come from. you might also notice there that the Catholic church in Pittsburgh ENDORSED THE EXHIBITION!

      ReplyDelete
    40. You people are fucking idiots.

They didn't give consent to donate their bodies.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE IN KC TRUST THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT?

THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION THAT THESE PEOPLE GAVE CONSENT.

      THIS IS A FREAK SHOW.

      ReplyDelete
    41. did these people give consent to be displayed. How can we prove it?

      ReplyDelete
    42. Heather the point is that these people DIDN'T GIVE THEIR CONSENT.

I would hope that a nurse would be better informed and have a deeper understanding about the ethical implications of this exhibit.

I can only hope that I've never a patient where you work as a nurse because you don't seem to care about people's right not to be exploited by their medical practitioners or their government.

      ReplyDelete
    43. I knew that some religious freakshow was gonna get all frothy over this show, but I hadn't guessed that it would be Mr. Naked Female Bodies On Display All Damn Day Botello.

      ReplyDelete
    44. I think if you read the post Tony is talking about the issue of consent and it's kinda obvious that these people might not have given it.

      ReplyDelete
    45. I'm hungry for Chinese food too.

      ReplyDelete
    46. Tony, I think on this point, you and Missouri's backwater hillbillies have found common ground.

There are at least 3 of these exhibits around the world. I believe this is the least distinguished of the 3 but regardless, its probably the best exhibit ever secured (dead sea scrolls not withstanding).

If it were up to you Tony, KC would be an even greater wasteland, void of culture and quality of life

      ReplyDelete
    47. Gorilla - "on display for KC's moneyed class" has got to be the most douchebaggyest statement on this yet. Stop trying to turn this into some Marxist bourgeoise vs underclass bullshit. That's just fucking insane. Tickets will probably be $8 or so, I think whoever wants to go can swing it.

      ReplyDelete
    48. I'm really surprised that more people aren't offended that the bodies have been swiped from China and there's no documented proof that they gave consent. I guess Tony's right about this town's racism.

      ReplyDelete
    49. WHY THE HELL AREN'T THERE MORE HOT CHICKS IN TODAY'S POST? YOU ARE A ASSHOLE TONY. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO WANK TO?

      ReplyDelete
    50. Hey lets ask the bodies what they think! Oh thats right , they are DEAD and dont care.
Hey lets all go picket museums that display mummies, Im sure they didnt consent either. i cant believe the jesus eaters are so upset since the catholic church regularly display relics, fingers , toes , shit like that, of certain "saints"

      ReplyDelete
    51. Guess none of you have ever been to Johns Hopkins medical museum...can see all kinds of good stuff like preserved human body parts from people with all kinds of diseases, etc. It's call science. I'd bet that most of the ones of you that are horrified, are the same ones that advocate for abortion (as long as you don't have to look at the once living child).

      ReplyDelete
    52. I'll be there with bells on! There WILL be liquor, right?

      ReplyDelete
    53. Okay, one, nobody advocates "for" abortion. They just advocate for the right to choose. Secondly, I would bet that the people who are all horrified by the Bodyworlds thing are actually the anti-abortion zealots who hate it when real life and/or science crowds their dreamworld.

Thirdly, Tony's just scared because this exhibit might be the first time he's been near a naked vagina since he came out of his mom's.

      ReplyDelete
    54. Ahhh...a big eye roll to the LPN. Like that hasn't happened before.

If you really were so concerned, perhaps you should take up the cause of med students using cadavers to learn. By the time they are finished, what's left resembles a turkey carcass after Thanksgiving dinner is over.

If you have issues about the exhibit, don't go see it. It's as simple as that.

      ReplyDelete
    55. Heather the issue isn't the bodies or this display. It's an issue of consent. If you really are a nurse and you really don't see the problem then I pray for your patients.

      ReplyDelete
    56. I can has cheeseburger?

      ReplyDelete
    57. If these were white peoples bodies-gringos Tony would be pitching the exhibit as one of the greatest things to come to Kansas City.

      ReplyDelete
    58. But they're not.

      ReplyDelete
    59. My fav place is Bo Lung's.

      Chinese please!

      ReplyDelete
    60. Bo Lung's - funny

      ReplyDelete
    61. Bo lungs HAH!

      ReplyDelete
    62. Dear god you have lost your mind Tony. Once again you have no proof these bodies were not donated. You suck and your not a media outlet like you think you are....loser

      ReplyDelete
    63. Hummmm. Good story. Nice links. My gosh, this is the first time I've visited here but you obviously have a lot of people who don't like you.

      ReplyDelete
    64. They are the ones who continue to live in a manner that would allow this. They do not rise up and try to create a better life for them or their children.. If they want to continue and condone the actions of this communist regime and not even have a say with what happens to their dead bodies.. tough.

      ReplyDelete
    65. When I read your blogs "reverse racism" comes to mind.

Alonzo Washington is as big a dbag as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Anywhere there is a camera and a tragedy in the black community for him to exploit he will be there. Bad example..

To be honest, I had no idea what race or ethnicity the bodies were. I dont care. I think the whole idea is disgusting. Why does it have to be about race. Oh yeah to further your agenda. You suck!

      ReplyDelete
    66. I'll be going. And taking my daughter. And eating lunch while we talk about it.

      ReplyDelete
    67. I'm an RN, My son is planning a future as a sports therapist, and my daughter is about to graduate with a Bachlors in Forensic Anthropology and is planning on Grad school. We will be going as a family to learn and better ourselves to help others in a way that heretofore has not been available. A person could study a billion pictures in text books or watch a million surgeries and still never be able to visualize the human body in such detail. This is an amazing opportunity that my intelligent, educated, catholic, hispanic children and I will not miss. For all of you that believe the exhibition is disgusting, unethical, and sacreligious, DON'T GO! For those of you that plan to attend only to be the equivalent of gawkers at a traffic accident, STAY HOME! For those of you that are trying to stop the exhibition from coming to Kansas City you may need the future services of one of my children or myself and should be thankful that through technology and scentific advancement there are learning opportunities such as this available. Because, even though you are all FUCKING IDIOTS the information presented might actually benefit you someday.

      ReplyDelete
    68. are you freaking kidding me?! you are taking an experience of knowledge and turning it into a racial and social tragedy?! this exhibit is supposed to be about educating the general public on how the HUMAN body is constructed and how this construction works as a machine. i am a white female and i plan on donating my body to scientific research on how the body decays. so you are wrong to assume that the fact that racism has a place in this exhibit. and in my personal opinion...i find it discusting that you would take such a wonderful act of learning and turn it into a circus act.

      ReplyDelete
    69. I was checking Google to see if there were new protests to the cadaver shows. I read your blog for the first time!..Whether or not you have been sarcastic, etc. in your comments before, it is OBVIOUS that you are very upset by this "show". Well-written article, well-thought out! Your contribution gives me hope! - There was so little protest in North America for so long... now I see a groundswell building up. Some of the comments I read about the Union Station show in your Kansas Star newspaper, are intellignet and caring. (Even the newspaper article slipped in concerns.) In Boston, when "Body Worlds" was at our local science museum (yes, von Hagen initially used Chinese people, and people from a former Russian country...without consent, despite his "crocodile tears" on 20/20. and he still has "factories" in China.)we read mostly the propoganda from "Body Worlds" P.R. machine in our media. I know that Premier's shows are exclusively Chinese, but I don't approve of them or Body Worlds. There should be legislation in North America regarding the shows and "specimens". Don't give up -- there are good people out there who value human beings. Thanks for your impassioned and sincere writing! Civilization needs people like you!
