Let My People Go! The Indy School Secession Scandal continues

I can tell which way the Star is leaning because they're calling it a "school-transfer dispute" rather than noting the fact that many in KC believe there shouldn't be any transfer at all.

Here are just a few of the key points they highlight:
Independence Superintendent Jim Hinson said he would like to hear from his Kansas City counterpart, Anthony Amato, before Friday on Hinson’s offer to discuss the possible transition of the schools.

Here are the important dates:
•Sept. 25: Absentee ballots start going out. Also, Progress Independence, a community group, holds the first of two evening forums on the school issue.
•Sept. 27: Second Progress Independence forum.
•Oct. 2: Election authorities must have estimates available about how much the November election will cost. An early estimate indicates the election could cost the Kansas City district at least $125,000. A similar estimate was unavailable for the Independence district.
•Nov. 6: Election Day.

SOME OTHER QUESTIONS STILL NOT ANSWERED
•How would student-transportation issues be sorted out?
•What is the value of the seven buildings and their contents?
•Could a shift prompt another costly desegregation lawsuit against Kansas City in federal court?
Still, I'm wishing these (white) folks the best of luck (as they leave a predominantly Black District) and I can only hope their departure (cut and run) will create a new sense of urgency in the School Board that's only agreed on giving Superintendent Amato a rough time thus far.

  1. Have you been able to give a real reason why they shouldn't be allowed to leave?

  2. Next thing you know, the Ward Prky/Wornell Rd crowd will want to join up with the Center district. That will leave Southeast, Northeast, Central, Paseo, and the Lincoln Academy. Which might be a blessing in disguise for the KC district. Lower transportation costs, lower staff salaries, fewer administrators (that last ones a joke-haha) and lower energy bills for fewer buildings to maintain. And they could all go to that Afro-centric based education, what ever the hell that is.

  3. If they lose Van Horn, will they re-open West? Would be a tremendous community boost for the west side, a central rallying point for the Mo side Hispanic base.

  4. I don't want to go to school with brown kids. They're icky.

  5. White people who care about their kids education want to pull their schools out of the black hole that is the KC district.

Much has been made, on this blog not surprisingly, of the fact that it is mostly white people. No facts have been cited, just typical bullshit claims by Tony.

However, nothing has been made of the fact that the parents are caring more about their children's quality of education than anything else. Are you forgetting why this discussion is happening? Because the KC school district is fucking shit.

That's it. It's shitty, and no self respecting parent wants their kids in shitbag schools. That's it.

  6. Sorry, forgot Westport. Is that the Latino HS now?

  7. It's unfortunate people want to turn this into a race issue. As a mother of two children currently attending one of these schools but living in KC, I honestly hope Independence wins. Independence parents(white and black), are just concerned about their kids education, and I wish them luck. Hell, I'll be moving from the district after this school year, so I can't say that I blame them for wanting out. KC school district has been a mess for years...

It has nothing to do with "not wanting to be in school with the icky brown kids", as little sue dooley from Leawood ignorantly posted. But it's okay because little sue dooley said she's only 5, she still has time to learn about being different before she turns into a bigot who hides behind a computer monitor saying evil things about others.

Ultimately, it's about the children. It's about what's best for them, and I hope more parents in KC follow my foot steps and choose something greater for their kids.
