Wetback by popular demand!!!

Apparently, after a lot of deal making, Kansas City is one step closer to being (an even bigger) inland port:
City officials and representatives of CenterPoint Realty Services Corp. on Friday signed contracts that moved the $10.6 million sale of the former Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base closer to reality.

In late 2005 Chicago-based CenterPoint agreed to buy the nearly 1,400-acre former military airfield then spend an estimated $250 million to redevelop it as an intermodal rail and trucking port that already is used by Kansas City Southern.

The ambitious inland port project aims to recruit tenants from the manufacturing, warehousing and shipping industries that are attracted by Kansas City Southern’s existing regional and international rail cargo operations.

Those cargo operations would become the centerpiece of the proposed International Freight Gateway at Richards-Gebaur.
Obviously, the writing is on the wall with this initiative . . . The free flow of commerce across the border will undoubtedly bring MORE PEOPLE from Mexico along the same path (which is what you're scared of) and this seemingly inevitable path of (and for) commerce seems to create a lot of anxiety in people BUT SOMEHOW those same feelings never manifest into folks wanting to pay higher prices or Wal-Mart being any less full . . . As usual, people whine and complain about one thing but where they put there pocketbook usually indicates where their priorities really reside . . . In my case: Chinese food and bad movies AND as far as everybody else is concerned I don't see anybody standing in line to pay more and avoid the lower prices (and wages) that free trade creates.

On a final note . . . The push for (basically) open borders by KC's business community speaks a lot louder than whatever chatter on the Internets and talk radio regarding how this country is going to hell because of the cheap prices for produce and slew of "brown kids" that Mexican workers leave in their wake.

  2. I don't care if people don't speak English. Just don't steal my shit, don't ruin my neighborhood with loud music and scuzzballs roaming the streets, don't expect me ever to let chorizo touch my lips, and come here legally. Pay your taxes, and keep things tidy.

Culture and language and anything else -- who cares? Just keep things nice and safe.

  3. I really don't care either as long as you do learn English and don't wave Mexican flags during protest parades. Whose brilliant idea was that, anyway? If Mexico's such a great country, why'd yah have to leave it?
I'm not worried though, any children of mexican migrants, legal or illegal, born here are certain to learn english, and stats show by the 3rd gen they don't even know spanish any more.
