Scholarship comes from sad story

I'm not going to go into details regarding the Olivia Raya and Tony Rios story because they're dead and it doesn't really matter now that their (alleged) murderers have been discovered. Even better, a scholarship dedicated to Olivia's memory is being offered at Rockhurst College . . . Which will no doubt attract more Latinos than whatever empty gesture UMKC has recently come up with . . . Still, at every mention of the long, lost couple I feel like I have to swallow my sentiments when it comes to the reality of this case . . . The aftermath of the tragic situation has driven Sylvia Raya (Olivia's mom) to become more involved in the community which has benefited everyone with a number of anti-crime marches, rallies and awareness of the subject in the Latino community . . . And now some kid will get a break in going to college because of the tragic events that lead to their deaths.

Still, I aways wonder when someone will address the circumstances that lead directly to the situation . . . I'm not gonna do it but there is not one member of the community who hasn't spoken of their own suspicions in private . . . It's none of my business and from what I've seen the outcome of the whole thing has inspired other good people to go on and try to accomplish great things . . . And that's probably more important: the circumstance of tragedy seems to be completely outweighed by how people deal with it . . . It's probably a life lesson that was taught to this community in a brutal fashion and something that didn't really hit home for me when watching Scooby-Doo cartoons or after school specials.

  1. I wonder if you could clear up a few question that I have about this scholarship. I believe the young woman who won the award this past year was only given one thousand dollars of the estimated one hundred thousand that was raised at the event. Everything was donated by local merchants. So where does the rest of this money go? If so much money was collected and the family truly wants to do great things for the community why not give out more then one award or give out more money to the winner. Thanks!
