KCPD Chief Corwin recommended that officers involved with denying a local Sudanese woman medical treatment during an arrest should be fired.
Police Chief James Corwin announced Tuesday that he is recommending to the Board of Police Commissioners that Police Officer Kevin Schnell and Police Officer Melody Spencer be terminated. So now, just like Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" discussion of the matter will most likely break down across racial lines, how you feel about bad haircuts and, sadly in this case, a dead baby.
Corwin also announced he has terminated Detention Facility Officer (DFO) Norman Johnson and reprimanded another DFO.
Officers Schnell and Spencer will be placed on suspension without pay while they await a hearing before the police board. The police chief can not fire a police officer. Only the police board can terminate a police officer, as outlined in Chapter 84 of the Missouri Revised Statutes.
"The police chief cannot fire a police officer" - that is COMPLETELY asinine.
ReplyDeletePerhaps rather than making uninfvormed statements you might try to investigate why the police chief is not allowed to fire a police officer. One reason would be to prevent the establishment of the "good ol' boy" network that all too often resulted in cover-ups and corruption. It is not inappropriate that such things have some sort of oversight procedure in place. n You might think a lawyer could appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteIf you're expecting TKC commenters to appreciate the subtle underpinnings of how things work, you're expecting far too much.
ReplyDeleteDoods, chill. I think Cara was just expressing her surprise at the strange inner workings of the KCPD.
ReplyDeleteEverybody knows the score, since the Pendergast era this town's police force has been an intricate series of rules and regs designed to make sure that nobody knows who exactly is in charge.
Anyway, she's a very smart lady and just like you two . . . I appreciate anybody leaving their two cents on this blog.
Also, I think I'm gonna allow anony again comments because I feel like it. Still, a big thank you to everybody . .. You too lemming!!! . . . For staying tuned.
Good lord, people - I know WHY the chief can't fire somebody, but again, it's asinine. The years of corruption are asinine (Boss Tom died 60 years ago and people still don't trust local government), the power of police unions is asinine, and bureaucratic maze of who does (or does not) report to whom is asinine.
ReplyDeleteAsinine is letting the police chief pick and choose who he wants working for him. I suspect that such a 'bureacratic maze' exists in most municipal organizations for good reason. Asinine is jumping to conclusions without knowing the whole story behind the rules. Perhaps cara needs to read the law more than she reads these blogs.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I bet it was lawyers who devised these 'asinine' systems in order to protect their clients.
ReplyDeleteAsinine is thinking that corruption in the police department like that of the Pendergast era no longer exists. Seems to me that this incident was effectively hidden for nearly a year. Are you really ready to trust the police chief so easily?
