Russ Johnson: Genius?

Russ Johnson is running for the 2nd in-district City Council seat and while his web page may not be too flashy what it does reveal, proudly I might add, is that the guy is a member of MENSA.

And while that may be a selling point for some people, I'm not sure if the honor is the best thing to be promoting considering that many outgoing Council members seemed much too smart for their own good or more accurately like a bunch of wiseguys. Also, I would think that a genius might figure out that people who were considering voting for him might want to see his photo and that a static web page isn't really the best way to garner many supporters.

Actually, I'm not sure how smart I want the next group of people on the Council to be . . . In fact, I'd probably be happy if they turned out to be dumb but honest.

  2. Why would any well-adjusted person join MENSA?

  3. Johnson must not understand how much contempt the "average" folks have always had for the smartest guy in the class. (but wait, how could he not understand, he's a genius!) Maybe his ego is getting in the way of "smart" strategy.

  4. dan,

There's nothing wrong with joining Mensa. I am a longtime member and have found the relationships and networking to be very gratifying. It's no different than any other social organizations, it's just the entrance requirements that are a bit more stringent.

Being a Mensan is not, however, something I would publicize on a political resume. Simply for the reaction that you have expressed.
