While LINC welfare pimps administrators would like to argue, academic programs are much more important than babysitting funds

The Star reports: "In a tense end to its board meeting, members voted to put on hold Superintendent Anthony Amato's decision not to allocate funds to the Local Investment Commission, known as LINC, to help it operate 53 after-school programs in the district. Amato decided to shift $1.4 million that had gone to LINC and use it for academic programs instead."

Again, this is yet another example of the School Board caving to political concerns rather than focusing on the well being of the School District (their job) as they push to provide $1.4 million with no questions asked to LINC and fight nearly every significant change to their deficient schools that comes their way.

  1. Tony,

Exactly what questions were supposed to be asked of LINC?

You are right that this is a political issue. Amato wants to use teachers for the after school care because that will allow state funds rather and districts funds to pay for the program.

No one has said LINC has done anything wrong. Both my kids use LINC and it seems reasonably well run. My school was one slated to shutdown LINC. My guess is using teachers instead of LINC would be fine.

LINC is one of the things that HAS worked, so is it too suprising parents are upset when Amato wants to shut it down?

Would it be better to use teachers, probably, but no one has accused LINC of mismangement.

  2. Here's what the media hasn't told you - the teachers in the schools where the LINC progran was to shut down are not signing up to work the program. Amato was not willing to pay them enough to make it worth working after school, which made for a 10 hour work day.

So the plan is to bus the kids after school to the nearest school with a LINC program that is not being shut down. Problem with that plan is there are not enough LINC employees or space at those schools to absorb the extra kids.

And the parents have made it very clear that they don't want their kids enrolled in more academics after school. That makes perfect sense, since the majority of kids in LINC programs are in younger grades and really do need extra curricular activities rather than academics, once their school day has ended.

Amato has blown $9 million on a reading program that stinks and is worse than the program the district had last year. So no, it is not political and the school board is not caving in to parents on this issue. They have in reality finally wised up to the money wasting Amato has engaged in - money the district does not have.

Amato's days are numbered anyway. He is the worst in a long series of ineffective superintendents in KCMO. And he has made too may patrons angry in his short time here.

  3. As a district employee, I have seen first hand how Amato has blown money. Plus he is a true dictator. He has an assistant that goes around and opens doors for him even though he has empty hands. He even wanted a school principal to, at 7pm at night, to bring his child, who was still at school, to him at his office. He has fired people left and right by eliminating positions, yet has created a slew of new positions. When he wants something, he truly wants it right now, not in 5 minutes. He is the absolute worst super that this district has had in years. It's already time for him to pack up and go bankrupt another district!!!!
