Scion Nextup Winner: KC's own Reach

I'm not sure exactly how to write this post because I like Scion cars but I don't like corporate marketing. I was all set to rant about hipsters, faux street cred and my standard discontent regarding all the things I can't afford but then I took a second to listen to "Comin' for You" by Ruskin High grad Reach and it completely won me over. The tune has mad flow, a really nice jazz guitar riff and a beat that's reminiscent of Sade's early (read: better) work. Put simply, it's how KC rap is supposed to sound.

Reach was recently profiled in The Pitch after he first won the contest. It's the standard, "I know everything before you, I hang out in clubs and talk to Black people and I'm so alternative that my corporate daddy sometimes doesn't like handing over my check" fare and it plays up the nice guy angle to an absurd degree. What's more important is that Reach obviously has skill. I don't care if a rapper brakes for puppies or takes care of his illegitimate children, what's more important is his work and not an image. Again, I'm in the minority here because it's clear that hip-hop fans have a taste for the mush mouthed stylings of Jay-Z and the like who put more thought into their videos than their music.

Anyway, I like Reach. I like Reach so much that I don't mind plugging a car that's affordable for some but still far out of my paltry price range. And, in the end, I guess it's cool that a clearly good guy got a little pocket change and a chance at fame for his talent. Listen for yourself.
