However, these organizations can engage in advocating for or against issues and, to a limited extent, ballot initiatives or other legislative activities.

“The political contests, especially for president, are starting earlier than usual. The IRS, as it has in the past, wants to remind charities and churches of the ban on political campaign activity. We also want to urge nonprofit and religious organizations to review the guidance we have issued to help them avoid any problems,” said Steven T. Miller, Commissioner of IRS’ Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division.

The IRS’ goal is to educate the leadership of these organizations to help them stay within the legal boundaries. In this regard, IRS Revenue Ruling 2007-41 outlines a number of scenarios to help charities and churches understand the ban on political campaign activity and actions that may arise.

In addition to the revenue ruling, the IRS has other helpful information for churches and charities on its website at /eo. For example, IRS Publication 1828, Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations, contains a discussion of the law affecting political campaign activity by churches and religious institutions.

Violation of the law can result in imposition of an excise tax or, in extreme cases, a loss of tax exempt status.

**********************************************************

I can think of several times local ministers and churches have broken this ruling.

How about this those of you who think it was a political rally contact the local IRS office and file a complaint. There is a huge amount of what can and what can't be done using a church for lobbying for something. You all know as well as I do Cleaver has campaigned from the pulpit many a time. But we also know Cleaver has never been one to always play by the rules either.

But long story short I don't think the meeting was against the law by being held in the church. Was it the correct place to do so, no in my opinion. Was the Save the Paseo group wrong in what they did? That's really too silly of an issue to get into to. The videos I saw the only people talking loudly maybe screaming were those at the front of the room supporting the cause. I asked a local minister his thoughts and while he asked to remain anonymous he stated he wouldn't have allowed such a meeting to take place in his church that there are many other place that are free for the public to use for those sort of things. He also stated people standing in the aisle would in his view be seen as being disrespectful only if they were yelling and interrupting the speaker. He made it clear come Sunday morning if worshiping by standing in the aisle felt right to you he would by no means ask you to sit down. And far as he knew there is no written law that says you have to sit down in a church. In fact he pointed out we stand and sing to the glory of God many times on a Sunday morning all over the church.

Time to put this issue to bed. The voters have spoken it is now a moot issue and those who see it as a loss need to get a grip on themselves and move on in life. It wasn't a racist issue it was a personal preference issue about an object that's a huge part of the history of Kansas City and as I said the voters have spoken and that's that.Super Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17259048078423520826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-85841371423239374582019-11-13T10:10:36.931-06:002019-11-13T10:10:36.931-06:00These 'churches' are far from sacred groun...These 'churches' are far from sacred ground. My first reaction was surprise, but upon reflection, I remembered that you are a devout Catholic so maybe it's not so surprising. I agree that churches, temples, synagogues, etc. should be respected. Because of our bloody, racist history, Black Churches are special, & should be respected as special. Members of the Black Community must feel safe in their special place, because they have been murdered in their churches & had their churches blown up.

To claim that it's inappropriate for Black ministers to be politically active is to ignore the disproportionate influence that Evangelical ministers have over our politics, & national discourse.

Finally, I agree with Bryan, that because it was not an actual church service that was taking place, but a political rally their mere presence was not inappropriate, but once inside they behaved inappropriately. While the entire effort was not racist, it is clear from the comments that some members were motivated by racial hatred.

Bottom line: Will Kansas City remain the only major city without a street named after Dr. King?

Byron Funkhousernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-5129160643553608862019-11-13T09:53:32.816-06:002019-11-13T09:53:32.816-06:00Politics out of the church altogether and crime ou...Politics out of the church altogether and crime out the urban core as priority number one before even considering a GD street name!

Can I get an Amen?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-74583357823067039812019-11-13T09:52:23.626-06:002019-11-13T09:52:23.626-06:00@9:36 You Rock !@9:36 You Rock !Ursula Haverbecknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-2563408107682201362019-11-13T09:46:21.959-06:002019-11-13T09:46:21.959-06:00I don't see a problem with Save The Paseo folk...I don't see a problem with Save The Paseo folks entering the church as it was a political rally and not a worship service, however, I believe they probably should have taken a seat rather than blocking the aisles.
