The places people live are shocking and these aren't shit holes where college students live, these are where small-town America lives. I've spent plenty of time in almost every neighborhood in KC because of my former job and I'm here to tell you houses in Pittsburg are worse than houses in the hoods of KC. A lot of the houses in Pittsburg are worse than the houses you see around Knuckleheads. These people are poor in a town with mostly bad job prospects. There is pockets of Pittsburg with money of course but so many of the people are poor, white, and on welfare. The only difference is crime is low, especially violent crime. I agree with the thrust of the article, & I live in small town America, though I have been all over the country, & experienced big city living, contrary to what my haters like to contend, & I've worked in both factories & offices, again contrary to what my haters like to contend.

A map of the distribution of opioid deaths shows that West Virginia is the hardest hit state, & a breakdown by county shows that the most deaths are occurring in the southern coal fields. If you've never worked in a coal mine I can assure you its no job that a sane man with other options would chose (not to mention being a mile underground in a tunnel with a three foot ceiling). It is hard, physical labor that often results in lower back pain. These coal miners didn't decide one day to become heroin addicts. Since there is little that can be done to repair a damaged back the doctors prescribed these opioids. The prescriptions were short term, as if the doctors didn't understand that opioids are addictive. They unwittingly created addicts & then shut off the supply. It didn't take long for drug dealers from Pittsburgh & Cleveland to arrive & educate them as to what they were really taking & offering them a solution to their withdraw symptoms. (I remember telling a friend, now deceased, that they call it Oxycontin because if they called it Heroin you wouldn't take it.)

These people aren't hippies from the counter culture, they were rather prosperous coal miners. (In 1972, the pay was a standard %100 a day. I don't know what it is now, but its logical to assume that it's comparable. Union workers are the highest paid workers, duh.) Now, they are poor & angry, & addicted to heroin. Treating this problem as a crime problem is stupid. This is a health problem. Able bodied, formerly prosperous, men are dying in droves. The southern funeral homes can't keep up with the demand.

The smarter young people are leaving West Virginia as they have always done, but now the rest of rural, small town America is migrating as well. What does this mean for Kansas City? The good news is that your new arrivals are young, intellect & motivated to better themselves, or they wouldn't be risking a move. The bad news is that they won't have your shared cultural history. They won't know, for instance, that the song "Going to Kansas City" says incorrectly "12th Street & Vine" instead of the correct 18th Street & Vine. A small example yes, but it shows the point: they won't know.

They know guns, even better than your urban combatants, & unlike the street gangs, they actually know how to shoot & hit their targets. The poor ones have already been hunting for food. There will be cultural conflict, & for the most part they have no experience with black people. (I was seventeen before I actually saw a black person in the flesh.) That's both good & bad.

Bottom line: Change. Since, the present sucks, embrace the risk. Welcome the new arrivals. Some of them will add to your city's vitality.
Byron Funkhousernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-53844727436390337922017-05-28T22:43:37.347-05:002017-05-28T22:43:37.347-05:00America was always a house of cards that was built...America was always a house of cards that was built on a one-time gift of post-war cheap oil...we've been in decline for decades and things are finally starting to be felt by what was formerly called the middle class.
What happens when a fully armed and entitled nation starts to see their livelihoods dwindle?
Gird your loins folks, it should make for exciting times!Jimmy Knoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-60418758748101548402017-05-28T22:42:18.788-05:002017-05-28T22:42:18.788-05:00And Raytown, Raytown is the worst. And Raytown, Raytown is the worst. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-2194266847395146312017-05-28T22:07:21.135-05:002017-05-28T22:07:21.135-05:00I thought Trump was going to fix all of this?
