Bring it on.

The Zocalo link was wonderful, penned by an historian expert on Aaron Burr. And reading that, I might agree about the reason for the duel being caused by Hamilton. Like his son, they were hotheads given to hyperbole and short tempers. They'd both have loved TKC. But signed their names!

I might now recommend America's First Daughter, by Stephanie Bray.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25817162-america-s-first-daughter.

Today we might call Patsy Jefferson wildly co-dependent in hiding her father's many faults and shaping his history.

I also enjoyed 1776, (played viola at Wichita State when we mounted that production. Had a huge crush on Hal Davis, who played Jefferson and went on to major theatre performances nationally.

And yes: Cole Porter is great. Hamilton the musical, like all movie and stage productions based on historical events, may be an artistic triumph but it plays fast and loose with real history. Simplistic, shallow, misleading - it may inspire its fans to look more deeply into the period it portrays, but in no way does it recreate that epoch.

See, for instance (there are many other examples):

http://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2016/03/17/lets-not-pretend-that-hamilton-is-history/ideas/nexus/

And anyway, my favorite is not Guys and Dolls, but Kiss Me Kate - and it will remain the best unless another Cole Porter comes along to top it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-19767486637190690252018-01-14T19:20:59.731-06:002018-01-14T19:20:59.731-06:00Thank you Tracy. It IS based on a ...What a bunch of rubes read TKC!

It IS based on a very comprehensive historical work about Hamilton.
It is the greatest musical of the past century, beating Guys and Dolls, finally.

I do have two friends who saw in in NY and Chicago, and made the huge mistake of failing to learn the libretto--(it IS an opera, after all). One paid $600 for her ticket mostly to be with the IN crowd on a Broadway tour. Sad. I was just embarrassed they and all their family members wasted their money-- because the lyrics go by very fast (I've listened 42 times already to the CD's), so they missed much of the import and thrill and content.

It HAS introduced a whole new generation to the American musical--AND taught them the history they should have learned in the public schools.

As for you not going, fine.
