South Loop Scheme Already FAILS To Achieve World Cup Deadline

Support and funding from the feds is already in doubt.

The South Loop Park did not stall, but faced setbacks, like missing out on a $75 million Reconnecting Communities grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the city needing to assume HNTB's design contract from the Port Authority of Kansas City due to delayed payments for work performed. The pace of work prompted Councilman Eric Bunch earlier this summer to dismiss a goal of completing the park in time for the World Cup as a pipe dream.

"I'm going to throw it out there, and people are probably going to be upset with me, but there's absolutely no way we're going to get the lid (over I-670) done in time for the World Cup," said Bunch, whose district will include the future park.
