Coronavirus Report: The Hill's Steve Clemons interviews Mayor Quinton Lucas

The Hill's Steve Clemons interviews Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Quinton Lucas. Read excerpts from the interview below. Clemons: What does getting back to a healthy community look like? Lucas: So I've had the fortune of being mayor now for a grand total of about 10 months, and we have dealt with on the positive side, a Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory and a parade, and then we had COVID.

  1. Is this idiot for real? The virus mysteriously disappeared during the mayors planned riots and now it's suddenly back and he's crying about KC and what's becoming of it. How much money did it cost to buy bricks and concrete for the riots? How much money did it cost to keep the city closed for the riots? Wait until everyone pulls out and then he will really be crying. Not very smart is he?

  2. This shows smilely selfies Lucas hasn't been paying much attention during his tenure as a "public official in KCMO.
The city ran out of money quite a few years ago and now depends on re-directed bond issue money, grants, and bucks from the feds just to pay its operational bills.
Bankruptcy happens very slowly at first.
    Then very quickly.
And ponderous self-important speeches aren't going to change anything.

  3. The people of Kansas City might have a different opinion about the 'fortune' of having the boy blunder as mayor. In ten months time he has driven the city, its finances, and its law enforcement institutions right over the cliff. The ground is rushing up fast but until it hits QL can continue indulging his fantasies about his competence and moral superiority. When the time comes to clean up the mess he will probably be moving onto to national politics so he can continue cutting swaths of destruction where ever he goes.

  4. ^^and yet he's been a fantastic mayor in every way. Done a terrific job! Weird.

  5. At some point the guillotines or whatever the modern day equivalent is are going to come rolling out if things keep going the way they are and these politico's continue to spin, lie, and play mind games with people.

  6. I don't see how Q Mayoral policies in KC are any more or less responsible for COVID financial losses or police morale than in other communities. This is a national problem and another 2 weeks lockdown is not make-or-break. Cities that opened up early are already seeing cases spike and hospital capacity overwhelmed.

Kansas City has not seen a debt-sensitive mayor since Byron and he was pilloried by the Star and the corporate welfare class. Back then debt funding and unrealistic retirement benefits was the way to go. What could possibly go wrong?

Imagine if Slie was running the show. The city general fund is mostly public safety: 400 million for...cops n KCFD. Transportation costs, streetcar, Sprint Center....these are all pre-Q. Yup, the city might go broke with a $1.7 billion budget, the country already is.

  7. The Hill must like interviewing idiots.

  8. Man, if you clowns think this virus has run it's course, you got another thing coming. The Memorial Day spike is showing up in a lot of places just not named Missouri or Kansas at this point. Yeah, yeah, I can hear it now "It ain't gonna kill me so why do I care?"

You know what'd be nice? If we had a national mitigation strategy.

  9. Since the boy blunder has always been playing to a larger stage than cowtown he could not resist the temptation to act like the mayors of New York and Los Angeles was to much for our little play mayor. The lockdowns in KC were draconian and never justified and went on for far too long for a danger that was way overblown for the local area. Once the PPE questions were addressed and it was obvious that local hospitals were not being overrun he should have started easing up and letting healthy people go back to work while protecting the vulnerable. That is what a reasonable and prudent man would do. Not a vain, narcissistic climber with way more ambition than ability.

  10. ^^^Why? Are state and local politicians too stupid to work things out for their own citizens?

    ReplyDelete
  11. OK, things are tight financially. So stop spending money like a drunken sailor.

If Quinton Lucas worked on municipal problems as well as he promotes himself in the media, things might actually get better!!!

  15. Mayor McDrinkerson doesn't know who to surrender or kneel to next! It's his number one skill!

  16. Q has the education, smarts, ambition, people skills and talking points to go higher. He is a media natural and obviously being groomed and coached for higher office because demographics are shifting and he is a vote getter. Better for us if he can do that while attracting attention to KC problems which include not whitewashing the budget issue.

Yes, the covid response was overblown in some ways and too late in others promarily because the "expert" CDC and White House guidance sucked. The age morbidity, traveller risk, and respiratory droplet spread were obvious from the start in Wuhan. Hydrochloroquine was shown effective back in February and the recent Lancet study showing otherwise has been withdrawn.

Q points out to The Hill that mid-sized cities are not getting the Federal Covid benefits that flow to larger cities. IMHO, he is not trying to outdo LA or NYC, he is trying to shake the DC dollar tree when the only other options are higher taxes and/or lesser services.

    1. Mayor McDrinkerson is a disaster. He has done absolutely nothing about the long standing issues in the community, and instead of leading has spent most of his time pursuing media spotlight. Maybe he looks good to himself on camera, but we were expecting an actual mayor.

The worst part by far is his nauseating attempt to please everyone during the epidemic and the riots. His approach to COVID was ridiculous and justifiably mocked. His virtue signaling during the riots has been pathetic--but well designed for the national stage.

I just wish he'd put in some kind of performance here.

  17. he'll be in biden's cabinet, so who'll take his place?

don't know what position, of course, as he's too honest to be attorney general.

    tbd.

  18. You're wrong. The cabinet will be smart hard-core idealogues with agendas, not regular guy generalists, even if they're black.

  21. And yet kc has a total of 1600 confirmed cases dating back to the first week of March, no recovered numbers have been removed from this list that’s now four months old. When will the truth about actual active cases come out? Not in our lifetime apparently because it goes against the narrative of scaring people to death so they’ll stay home.

The best news is the great state of Missouri is coming off all restrictions June 16!

Take that and shove it up your pie hole boy blunder! Hahahahaha!

  22. By the way, has mayor mcdrinkerson withdrawn his allegiance to blm? Or is he still in the drinking phase of the initiation!

  23. Mayor Lucas you should have thought about the city's revenue before you led the BLM / ANTIFA protests, looting and arson of Kansas City businesses that shut down the tax revenue stream in KC.

The economy was just starting to kick back in after corona virus and then wham the protests start.

Hmmmmmmmmmm..............election coming up soon; could the left-wing media's throwing gas on the flames in both the Corona Virus and George Floyd case be politically motivated before a national election?

  24. Hey according to American white folks, we have all of the best minds in the whole world. The American white man is the smartest, the most knowledgeable, and has all the answers to everything. White people are constantly bragging about how much they know and how great America is and the rest of the world is light years behind. Well...

All these smart ass white folks we have, why did we have a shortage of simple face masks, why do they have no idea where to start to fight Covid 19, why have over 110,000 people died from it, why does the US have many times more positive cases and deaths than any other country in the world?

The answer is simple, white people are a bunch of phony, ungodly people who will never amount to nothing because they have no heart.

  26. @3:41 - AS usual, you folks had nothing positive to contribute to the COVID-19 crisis other than wait for Whitey to take care of you.

I am sure twenty years from now a Hollywood movie will come out saying three African American women came up with the cure for Corona Virus and saved the world like the b.s. NASA mathematicians Hollywood movie from last year.

On another note, it appears Mayor Lucas has been hitting the cannabis.

  30. Kansas City = Detroit.

Bankruptcy is in the air. Good. Teach these assholes a lesson on mindless, needless spending. That gazillion dollar airport, the toy train, the hotel, Power & Light, East Patrol relocation and paying for mortgages to relocate occupied residents... yep, their chickens are coming home to roost.
