Will we ever know reliable history about Jesus?

Is religion mostly about what we think, feel, believe and search for today or is it more about how what happened years -- indeed, centuries -- ago continues to shape and affect us today? That question is too broad for...

  1. I knew a white dude who practiced Buddhism and another Iranian person who said one reason he didn't know or have a reason to believe in Jesus is because the word wasn't spread that far east back then.

  2. 6:41...yes it was, but his ancestors killed a lot of Christians.

  3. And here comes the Catholic Basher and Israel hater attacking Jesus again. Why does Bill keep pretending to be a Christian?

  4. Don't worry Billy. You will know when you meet Him on Judgment Day.

  5. St. Thomas went as far east as Goa were he was martyred by heathens. There were Christian communities in Persia too.

  6. Anyone really interested in this topic can read Bart Ehrman's books on the topics or listen to his Great Courses talks on Kanopy, the library's free streaming service.

  7. 801 is right.

tammeus raises a big question but just ends up commenting on a book he read. i'm sorry, but his stuff is typical star-quality level.

for the big question in serious fashion, go to ehrman's works as a start.

also, archeological projects gave snippets of information. amazingly, more is being learned now than in the large swath of history. see, for example, qumram and the dead sea scrolls, which were discovered in 1947.

best of all, go and see for yourself. you'll know that something happened.

  8. Bart Ehrman is an atheist. He an hardly be trusted to give an unbiased assessment of this topic.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 8:19. Why did you skip over the fact that Ehrman is an atheist?

    ReplyDelete
  10. ^^^^And yet Ehrman is agnostic, although he started out as a fundamentalist and was derailed by facts. Weird.

  11. Will we ever know reliable history about Jesus?
Bill Tammeus read a book, and wanted to let everybody know it.

Here's the more interesting section: WHERE PEOPLE OF FAITH FAILED AGAIN

"I will write much more here this weekend about this week's U.S. Supreme Court decision that LGBTQ+ folks are protected by federal civil rights laws. But for now, just know that this decision is one more welcome undoing of bigotry, a lot of which finds its roots in a misreading of scripture. People of faith, particularly Christians, should have been in the leadership of the movement to liberate gays and lesbians from this oppression, but, instead, often have been the leaders in promoting anti-gay attitudes. There's something wrong when people of faith have to be shown how to live moral, loving (and constitutional) lives by secular courts instead of by their own faith traditions."
Some would say that there's also something wrong with a homosexual white male Christian "faith writer" who rejects Biblical tenets when they don't mesh with his liberal Democrat theology.

    ReplyDelete
  12. And yet some would say there's also something wrong with someone who claims to be Christian but does not adhere to Christ's admonition to "judge not lest ye also be judged." Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  13. And yet Bill routinely Judges. Double Weird.

  14. 9:20, an agnostic is an atheist who doesn't admit he is an atheist, but thinks he is fooling people. Like you.

  15. Of course Jesus existed and was God. The Jews proved it : As soon as Jesus came and was crucified the Jews stopped sacrificing animals twice a week at their temple (10's of millions of animals each year). They had been told to sacrifice animals in the old testament and had done it for thousands of years, to avoid hell. Do the Jews sacrifice animals anymore - NO! And the Jews no longer seek with zeal the Messiah promised to come in the Old Testament. When is the last time you heard a Jewish person say "I just can't wait for the day our Messiah arrives"? No the Jews know that Christ came and since he didnt do their bidding politically, by removing the Romans - they rejected him. Jesus's detractors proved he exists.

  16. "Of course Jesus existed and was God."

A person named "Jesus" existed; the "was God" assertion can not be proven.

11:52: An agnostic is a person who acknowledges that one or more of the thousands of religions that claim they are the "one true way" may have validity but realizes he or she is not able to determine which if any do. An atheist believes there is no God and is often as adamant that atheism is the one true way as evangelical Christians are that theirs is the only path to salvation.

Agnostics, in other words, believe in live and let live. Does this help open your narrow mind a crack?

  17. 12:21 thinks he is kidding us, but he is making a distinction without a difference

  18. Ever know a fanatic agnostic?

  19. Based on the picture, no we will not have a reliable history about Jesus.

For the record - Jesus was black, not white.

  20. ^^^And female. Maybe trans. And hung out a lot with twelve guys.

  21. Of course Jesus proved he was God. He rose from the dead and visited hundreds of people - and the Romans dared not try kill him a 2nd time. Thats why after he was executed, his followers didnt walk away claiming he was a scam like Jim Jones and other fake Gods. Instead of saying Jesus was a fake and waste of their time and then going back home they traveled the world declaring he is God. They even died and so did their families along with them. Then gave up their jobs to preach. 11 of the disciples died horrible deaths when they could have said Christ was a fake and lived peacefully for years. Judas who was a defector killed himself when he could have been a famous whistleblower had Jesus not been God and was fake. Since Jesus was penniless and didnt have his own grave, and held no political or military position, he should have been forgotten. However your the years are all A.D. and B.C. for the whole world, even in Muslim countries. If he was not God his followers would have called him a fake, disappeared, and there would be no mention of Christ today.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, who would die for a fake? After he is dead. Would you? Your family? I think not!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You will know if Jesus is real 1 second after you die. If he is real, what will your fate be?

    ReplyDelete
  24. The bible saying of "judge not" is taken the wrong way. Are we to "not judge" or punish a child molester or criminal? The bible instructs readers to use the beatitudes as a standard to determine if someone is striving to be Godly or evil. The bible lists human actions that God hates. The Bible lists the reasons people will go to hell. The Bible judges....I do not need to judge. You convict yourself as guilty by your actions

  25. People mock God. They will be sorry.

  26. what's the difference between a religion and a cult?
    your guy is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The difference is a true religion is a 100% true message sent to you by your creator. Telling you the past, present and your future. Yes the true religion mentions YOU as either a follower or rejecter. A cult is like a glass of clean water with 1% poison added, its looks good, but the 1% is going to be very bad for you longterm, and its predictions and past claims do not come true. A cult usually wants power, money, fame, expensive stuff etc. A true religion just wants you to go the good place when you die - its concerned about your future. But the choice is yours! The devil has 1 vote to send you to hell, God has 1 vote to send you to heaven and they are going to let you cast your 1 deciding vote where you might go after you leave this earth. Its your choice. So dont blame God or the devil, Its all your choice. How much time have you spent in your life analyzing and comparing all the religions to find the real one?
