Overland Park Police department announces death of detective who spent 27 years on the force

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Overland Park Police Department announced Monday that Detective Brian Hampton died over the weekend. "With great sadness this past weekend, we lost another member of our OPPD family," a spokesperson for the department wrote in a post on their Facebook page.

  2. Why is it a tragedy? That’ adjective is overkill. By this use of the word, every person that dies on the job is a tragedy. He of course, didn’t have to be a police officer. There are smarter jobs out there.

  6. Two dead OPPD cops in a short amount of time. Both off duty. What a devastating loss to these officers’ families. OPPD “on paper” tours a grant funded CIT (Crisis Intervention Training) program. This addresses how they treat members of the public with mental illness. This would include PTSD and suicide. I can’t help but wonder if the second officer suffered from some type of trauma and no one from his department noticed. No details from OPPD on how the officer died is suspicious. Either way, OPPD cops are hurting and going thru tremendous stress. I hope the Chief has the courage it takes to speak up on what happened and realize his officers need the courage to speak up if they see one of their own hurting and needs intervention.
