There's a great deal of talk about American "liberation" during the coronavirus crisis but one Kansas City movement has achieved quantifiable progress in their mission to free poverty-stricken locals from their bills.

KC TENANTS CELEBRATE CONTINUED JACKSON COUNTY COURTS SHUT DOWN & EVICTION MORATORIUM!!!
Here's the notice and the group's perspective on local pandemic legal barriers to payment for goods & services as cowtown social justice advocacy advances:
KC TENANTS Social Media Celebration: Jackson County, Missouri has EXTENDED its eviction moratorium AND includes a suspension of execution of garnishments, through May 18, 2020.
WHAT THIS MEANS: This means there will be NO hearings, NO eviction judgments, NO sheriffs at the door, AND debt collectors can't take wages and bank account money from people they have judgements against (debt collectors can't take your stimulus payments).

You may not agree with their positions but at least they are keeping the community informed!

It still does not eliminate any debt either. You might not get kicked out but you're just going to keep running up a debt that will be worth coming for in the end and your welfare and tiny non 40 hour week salary can and will be garnished. Nothing is free and those who think it is are in for a huge butthurt.

ReplyDeleteRhetorical, but the courts are down due to the virus; nothing else. Good PR for KC Tenants and Mayor Q, but ultimately the rent does come due and due in full. The landlord doesn't have anything to gain from evictions, only rent.
ReplyDeleteSlumloards aka property management companies look at the eviction moratorium and be thinking...hmm ya I am not getting rent now, but once the moratorium is over I can legally demand all rent due past and present, and once the renter cant pay I can legally evict them and sue them for the rest of their lease get my bonus and re rent the dump down at power and light. If it wasnt mandated that there is a moritorium on rent, property owners would have worked hard to kick your ass out and go after you for the rest of your unpaid lease...its just the way the greedy rental world works....so stop renting and buy a place!

ReplyDeleteIf there is a lease signed, the landlord should provide what is promised and a tenant should pay what is promised. Pretty simple. However; when hard times hit, a good landlord will work with the tenant to get back on track. And a good tenant will do everything they can to get back on track. Communicating in a productive way can make all of this happen more easily. Bottom line is just do YOUR part. Look at yourself in the mirror and asked honestly “Am I doing my part?”
