Shawnee Mission School District offers teachers unilateral contract; union warns of teacher shortage

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Shawnee Mission School District's Board of Education voted Thursday to pass a three-year unilateral contract for teachers in the district, a first in the state of Kansas. Teachers have three options. They can choose to sign on to the unilateral contract, they can keep working under the terms of the previous contract or they can resign altogether.

  1. Let them walk then fire them all. They are paid very well for the hours hey work. I'm sure there will be a huge ass long line of teachers willing to take the jobs at the current pay.

  2. ^^and yet there's a nationwide shortage for teachers. Weird.

  3. The teachers need to tell the school board to go suck a dick, which probably do anyway.

  4. Average hrs worked a day 12, continuing education on there time putting up with ignorant parents and risking their life in school shooting situations, it goes on and on

  5. i feel like these news reports have little context for how teacher salaries and work loads have evolved over the past 20 years. Have they always been entitled to 2 hours for planning? How do teacher salaries compare to surrounding districts (cost of living adjusted)? Teachers have never been been getting rich, but how does their benefits/hours/retirement compare with a similarly educated professional in the private sector? What is the attrition rate of teachers? Has the attrition rate changed over the past 20 years? We know that the unnamed political group out of Wichita has an opinion on school funding with some slanted statistics. We also know that the labor union has some slanted statistics. Need actual reporting rather than regurgitating the party line of whomever is being cited.

  6. Question to all the TKC readers - are you paid well enough?

Every reader's response: I'm underpaid, under appreciated, and worked too hard.

If every reader were given the same platform to bitch and moan about their salary without the fear of getting fired every single company would have the same headline "Employees of _____ feel like they are getting screwed" or "Company ______ doesn't have revenue for raises this year". This is a non-story. The real world - we all don't get what we want. Teachers are no different.

  7. 10:06 is correct, I hope the teachers walk. Just goes to show you how “woke” Johnson county is, if you can take care of illegals, koloreds and homosexuals then you can take better care of your teachers.

It’s time to stop treating teachers as third class citizens.

  8. I hope they walk too and then realize they'll have to work in KCMO or KCK school districts. Have fun, losers

  10. Retired Teacher1/31/20, 11:03 AM

12 hours a day my rear end. I am a retired metro area teacher and very rarely and I mean very rarely did I ever work a 12 hour day. Then it was mostly to my doing not the jobs doing. These teachers today have it made over us who started 30 years ago. 10:12 and 10:17 raise good questions that are not being addressed by the media. Everyone wants to always make more money, that's common thinking and desires of any person no matter what job they have. But today's teachers have it made. Go look at the SMSD website, it lists all the salaries and days teachers work and so forth. My last few years of teaching I taught middle school math. My day started when I arrived at 7:20 to 7:30, first class was at 8:05 and I was done and gone for the day by 4:00. During this day I had app 2 hours of free time that was for lunch, breaks between class and so forth. How many times have you driven by a school and seen teachers cars there at 7 in the morning then same cars still there at 7 that evening? Same as never for sure.

  21. This sounds to me like the Hollywood Celebrities that I am still waiting on them to move to Canada because 1) Trump won the election, or, 2) that two justices were confirmed to SCOTUS nominated by Trump, or 3) Trump was not removed from office through an illegal impeachment.
Let these people go to work elsewhere for less money and benefits. That will show how smart they really are.
