KCK IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS GROUP DENOUNCES DOUBLE TALK FROM MAYOR ALVEY ON WELCOMING REFUGEES AMID MUNICIPAL ID PUSH BACK!!!
Safe and Welcoming Wyandotte - An immigrants rights group - will be at the UG commission meeting today but they won't be meeting with the new Mayor despite his statement to welcome refugees. In fact, here's insight into a recent dispute with the Mayor and the rhetoric surrounding a move to create a Municpal ID . . .
Activist Faith Rivera says:
"I am mad. Mad that the mayor will listen to our white governor about welcoming refugees. But will not listen to his constituents about this issue.
"Then when I read the article from the Wyandotte Daily, "Two suspects in the Central Avenue shooting, for example, might have received municipal IDs if the only requirement was showing a utility bill, stated by Mike Taylor."
"To me I hear president Trump in these remarks. People our neighbors, our family and friends who want these IDs are not looking to break the law. They are looking to abide by them. They want to be able to cash their checks, get their children enrolled in school, when asked who they are they have an ID. What is so wrong with letting someone have an ID. Welcoming the refugees and municipal IDs go hand in hand. Its as if Wyandotte is willing to extend their hand out and pulls it back when the refugee is willing to extend their hand. We don't need to sike our community members out. We need to embrace them with compassion and fully open arms."
"Our brown community members work hard and deserve to be citizens with IDs.
"Also we need to vote. We need to register our moms, dads, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, while talking about whats going on in our community. If we unite we can change community issues like this. We are 60% of the vote in this community, we just don't vote. That's the sad part."
