First and foremost, here's a glimpse at good info and public meeting coverage from Kansas City TV news crews . . .
Fox4KC: The Paseo vs. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard debate flares up ahead of November vote
KMBC: Question 5 will be on the November ballot.
KSHB: The Paseo vs. MLK: renaming debate reignites ahead of election
Now, a peek at the political scuttlebutt after talking over this topic with about half a dozen locals who do biz, report on and represent the neighborhood along the iconic road . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS PREP FOR VOTERS TO SAVE THE PASEO AND RESTART THE MLK BLVD CONVERSATION!!!
More to the point . . .
BOTH MLK BLVD SUPPORTERS & CRITICS SEEM UNSATISFIED WITH THE SIGN CHANGE THAT HASN'T SPARKED THE 'ECONOMIC RENAISSANCE' PROMISED BY SUPPORTERS BUT ONLY SERVES TO FURTHER DIVIDE KANSAS CITY!!!
Here's the word . . .
"There are very few people who like how this was handled. And what we're seeing leading up to November is a lot of very motivated people who want to Save The Paseo with very little resistance from those who argued for the change. It's simple math, the most committed people usually win and so far the Revs haven't shown an effort to organize a campaign or any real willingness to spend money and defend their City Hall victory. So, KC might soon have to go change the signs back to The Paseo only a few months after replacing them in the first place."
For KC residents . . . Tell us how you'll vote and why in order to figure out this hot mess as we slouch toward another low turnout election where ANYTHING can happen.
Developing . . .
Felt really strongly about this at one point but now I'm just disappointed that KC has been stuck arguing about this for more than a year. Shame that we don't have more effective leaders who can build a consensus and move the people in the same direction without going back and re-litigating everything.
ReplyDelete^^^ You just answered you own question btw. The Revs do have a plan and it has nothing to do with voting. Stay tuned and don't forget that you were told.
DeleteAt last a quarter of a million dollars spent on this garbage so far and it's not even close to done yet. I guess we're going to have nothing but an MLK debate when we should be worried about more important issues.
DeleteKC has lost its mind.
ReplyDelete^^^ +100
DeleteNever should have changed the signs in the first place.
MLK never even visted KC

It should be on Troost or Prospect. Designate it a Blvd and clean it up. Erasing KC history was always a bad decision.
ReplyDeleteAnd they never told the public how much we have to pay to use the name either, crooked lyin cheatin bastards
ReplyDelete8:27 but that’s what the cleave did and sLIE carries on the tradition of wiping out all white history, sLIE was happy when the census reports came out that the white population was declining, he got caught bragging about it.
ReplyDeleteThis it's always been about nothing but money which is a sin in much religions so what surprises me the reverence are pushing the issue so hard. It's money because we won't get to Southern Baptist convention or any other black conventions unless we Pony up to the king family. It's the same way with all this new luxury building and the trolley line. City was cold by the RNC and the DNC we did not have enough luxury lodging for the wealthy and the politicians and their donors. So build one light two light so we have upscale air B&B close to the convention center. The city is much like the movie Field of Dreams where they really do believe that if you build it they will come.. to everybody out there today May peace be with you all always
ReplyDeleteThe people should vote to reverse the name change.

About the only people who could even pretend that they believed that changing the name of a street would result in an "economic renaissance" are the same know-nothings that think THE streetcar has created a utopia downtown.
ReplyDeleteEvery scheme, no matter how transparently selfish or ridiculous, is pitched with the nonsense of "jobs and economic growth".
All empty BS, as a handful of insiders and boosters walk away with the taxpayers cash.
KCMO has become grifters central.
And the cowardly clueless electeds at 12th and Oak just keep shoveling the cash into the maw.
It never changes.
Not doing exactly what the Black Revs want is RAYCISS!
ReplyDeleteJust like not doing exactly what a immature Sociopath wants is TREASON!
While were at it that's the Paseo bridge. is that racist too....
ReplyDeleteIt should properly be renamed the Paseo Del Norte. If you don't know what it means look it up. Because it's very accurate description of the bridge.
DeleteI'll vote for The Paseo just to stick it to Katherine Shield's fat ass
ReplyDeleteI’m voting to save the Paseo name, opposed to paying anybody to use their name for a street! Are we paying Cleaver????
ReplyDelete^^Did you call the city and ask??? Why not?? Why would you come here and ask???
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone here voting for it being MLK? I can't imagine anyone is
ReplyDelete^^Yes. Now go watch Faux News all day loser. You're completely disconnected from reality.
ReplyDeleteSave the Paseo!
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty sad that the SCLC is running around pushing a street name change while the black community is being destroyed with violence and poverty. SCLC needs to stick with something meaningful to black people, instead of running around trying to line the King family's pockets. The money that the city spent changing out those signs could have been used to help struggling black mothers with day care costs.
ReplyDeleteOhh go wash your neck 9:09! You can't have it both ways!
ReplyDeleteWhen are these so called black leaders going to start helping Our Fellow Americans in the Black Communitys? Instead of worrying about the name of a street sign? Have they noticed the blood running down the streets..... 11:34 Right on the Money.
ReplyDelete^^They will when you will. How about that???
ReplyDelete^^^^ La Dickue voelt lan.
ReplyDeleteNo bananas for chimpy today, he’s in a real bad mood because mlk street is going down! Haha!
ReplyDeleteI would hope that KC voters will restore the name to Paseo as it should never have been changed. The blacks are the first to complain about figures from the past. Well, sorry, MLK is a figure from the past AND he had NOTHING to do with KC.

ReplyDeleteVote to change it back to Paseo! MLK has nothing to do with KC. KC can't afford to nor needs to pay annually for using the MLK name. This was done on YOUR TAX DOLLARS without your vote!!!!!! Vote THE PASEO BACK.
Relocating the MLK signs to Troost street is the best idea I've heard so far. Cost effective, now that signs have been paid for and delivered (de and re installation will cost. Keep those pesky gentrifiers further west where they belong.
ReplyDeletei like troost being named troost...and well the Troost signs have already been paid for and delivered too. Name some numbered street or something, if you want to even name a street at all after mlk, which we should not do
ReplyDeleteThe puppet master here was none other than the shifty nifty E. Clever. Clever lobbied members of the Council for their votes on a preliminary name which was MLK/Paseo Blvd. Then in committee the Paseo part of the name was eliminated by the J. Reed. Did you know he has a masters degree from UMKC??? Clever then lobbied and bullied the members who supported the compromise name to also support the new MLK Blvd name. This is what goes on in the back rooms of City Hall.
ReplyDeleteHey chumpy lay off of chimpy.. go back to mommies basement and play some video games.
ReplyDeleteNow we have the latest proposed taxpayer screw out of millions of dollars fiasco, the "Green Line". We will, of course, need bike lanes painted on it to protect spandexers from dangerous joggers. This city is WOKE!!!!
ReplyDeleteChimpy deserves all the criticism, he earns it and deserves it daily, that boy is dumb!
ReplyDeleteThe MLK debacle is just one more racially dividing issue. MLK was a uniter of people. There is no one uniting KCMO on this vote. Sad.
ReplyDeleteThe hell with saving Paseo . Let’s save the law abiding citizens from the thugs.
ReplyDeleteHow about the Conman Cleve naming his car wash after MLK? There could be the Selma Express Wash, the I Have A Dream Hot Wax, etc.
ReplyDelete@7:38 Conman Commie Clev so true and logical.I like it. The rest sounds perfect. I'm surprised he hasn't done this yet. After all he is a progressive Democrat.
ReplyDeleteThe Uber app still shows the Paseo as the Paseo, I guess Uber knows Uber black riders wont win this one, and Uber saved a software change from Paseo change to MLK back to Paseo BUHAHAHAHA I love Uber they get my drunk ass home every friday night and on the CHEAP, how do the drivers make a living driving for companies like that?
ReplyDelete8:23 true, they should have put a plastic bag imprinted with the MLK BLV sign OVER the Paseo sign, secured it with zip tie, then now all we would have to do is take off the plastic 3 cent bag and turn it back into the Paseo once it gets changed Back ( and it WILL). And for the hood rats you own the Paseo name too, hookers, killins, drug deals for decades happened on the Paseo....you can't just change the name and pick your history statement. That would be like changing the signs from "Welcome to Hell" back to " Welcome to Kansas City" see what I mean? It would never work!!
ReplyDeleteLots of fools here, the area actually has a lot of new residents and people making very good livings.
ReplyDeleteKeep the name, move on to a new issue.
ReplyDeleteThis is what happens when you have a group of elected officials and/or civic leaders with personal agendas that don't give two squirts of piss about the will of the people. This thing never made sense from jump and is about as original as sliced bread. Just about every major to semi-major city in the country has an MLK Blvd somewhere within it's boundaries.
ReplyDeleteAdd the costs of this ridiculous move and you have something that NEVER made ANY kinds of sense on any level.
NOW we're going to add even more cost with a potential move back to The Paseo.
And people wonder why this city has some of the highest dept per capita in the country. Shit like this.
