TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! INSIDER: KANSAS CITY STREETCAR PARTY BROUGHT DEATH AND DESTRUCTION TO CROSSROADS!!! KEEP TOY TRAIN OUT OF MIDTOWN & PLAZA!!!

In the blame game following the horrific killing of an innocent young woman in the Crossroads, this Summer . . . Amid recent changes and social media hateration, one culprit has been excluded despite a close connection to the party vibe that facilitated the good times and ensuing gunfire.

To wit . . .

MANY NEIGHBORHOOD INSIDERS BLAME TOY TRAIN STREETCAR PLANNERS FOR ENCOURAGING A RECKLESS, DRUNKEN PARTY WITHOUT MUCH REGARD FOR NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACT!!!

Even downtown advocates admit that First Friday had been building to a deadly crescendo with help from streetcar advocates.

Here's a relevant passage from a sponsored contend downtown booster outfit that offers a hint of the worsening chaos:

“We started hearing about experiences being shared by employees getting off work and being hassled going to their cars at 11 or 12 at night,” she said, adding there were complaints of loud music and open drinking on the sidewalks.

"At meeting hosted by the Crossroads Community Association a week ago, about 150 people broke into 10 groups and were asked to make suggestions about the future of First Fridays.

“Many of them wanted to return to art,” Aron said. “They didn’t want a drunken street party, that was the biggest theme.

“It was a response to the whole thing getting out of control, there was no way to monitor it all.”

The association leaders also said their organization had not received the support they would have liked from the city.

Laws against open drinking weren’t being enforced and the police department was not engaged helping with security.

A naive and silly hope . . .

“What’s different now is the streetcar has helped people earn more money and maybe they can use some it for the improvement district,”

Sadly, the ignorance about drunken free-for-all party culture continues from City Hall . . . A recent screed suggests . . .

But Kansas City is going to have to find a way to keep First Fridays going at full strength, because to do otherwise is to let shooters write the script and let stray bullets keep us at home.

In an interview, Lucas said the response to this tragedy and others cannot be, “Oh heck, a kid brought a gun, so let’s shut it down and make the difference even more stark” between life in urban and suburban neighborhoods.

First Fridays in the Crossroads, he said, are one of the few places and times that Kansas Citians — of all ages, races and income groups — enjoy together. “We need to think about how do we spend more time together, not less. We need to make sure we have security, but you have to keep community events going.”

Our TKC retort . . .

ASKING PEOPLE TO CONTINUE TO PARTY AGAINST THE THREAT OF DEADLY GUNFIRE IS THE MOST IRRESPONSIBLE HACK WRITING WE'VE EVER SEEN FROM THE KANSAS CITY STAR AND ONE OF THE FIRST INDICATIONS MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS IS CLUELESS ABOUT DEADLY KANSAS CITY STOPPING VIOLENCE!!!

Thankfully, a friend of the blog and a Kansas City Insider sent us this note that offers a bit of reason and perspective . . .

Here's the word:

"After the fatal gunfire in the Crossroads, we must look at the role of poor planning and the complete disregard for public safety from our civic, business and elected leaders. The pattern is consistent and it's obvious that KCMO's "brain trust" doesn't have any real concern for how their developments impacts neighborhood and residents.

A beautiful, innocent woman had to die before they did anything and even then there's a call to keep the party going for the sake of "momentum" and downtown development.

As a resident of the Plaza I'm warning my neighbors that we must be ready to challenge the faulty premise that the streetcar brings unlimited prosperity. That's an economic theory, when in reality what we've seen is that the streetcar brings a some unsavory characters into otherwise peaceful communities and creates a free-for-all environment that's more focused on night life and street parties rather than homeowners and workers.

BE WARNED. Even in the face of a murder the advocates of the streetcar and rampant development won't back down. They don't care how many people are killed or what circumstances affect our community. They're here to push the idea of "momentum" and "equity" without any opposition, reason or responsibility."

You decide . . .

  1. Within walking distance of the streetcar tracks. I guess all of that momentum was likely to kill someone. Sad it had to be a person who was contributing so much to our city.

    1. Read that quote from Quinton in the Star. Really surprised he could be so callous. People have a right to be scared when bullets are flying. What's unfortunate is he's not talking about more policing or extra security measures, he's just blaming the people who responded appropriately to express their concern about the gunfire.

    2. Blame the schools, not the streetcar. It's the KCPS that keeps producing one generation of thugs after the next who are killing visitors to KC.

  2. Don't blame the streetcar or the bad planning. Of course they might have not been great in making things safer but in the end they didn't pull the trigger only one person did that and he needs to be in jail for the rest of his life.

  6. This is just ridiculous.

The streetcar has been a benefit for all of downtown and the Crossroads. Without help from streetcar traffic there would have never been as much development or interest in these parts of KC.

Of course nobody wants violence but our Mayor Lucas is absolutely correct in wanting the people of KC to be courageous and stand up to violence instead of hide away from it. We must not let the criminals rule the streets, it takes a whole community to continue to make our city best in the Midwest, I am happy that we will not let this kind of skepticism stand and instead work to offer MORE public transit to Midtown and the Plaza and connect all part of KC for free in the very near future.

  7. F**k the street car keep it out of midtown and the Plaza. Try 18th and Vine. Prospect would be even better

  8. Go4KC, the Crossroads was doing fine, and was a reasonably enjoyable place long before the Streetcar was even thought of. As for the "development" there, all the TIFcrap has done is force the fun elements of the Crossroads to leave and move to the West Bottoms. What is left there is just another P&L/Westport/Place clone.

Yet another thing the City fucked up.

  9. ^^^^ Not the case. The streetcar brought far more people and prosperity to the crossroads. Look at the numbers or just the size of the crowd. The streetcar is the future of KC and now is not the time to run away and hide but to continue to expand and help all of Kc become safe and more accessible. I'm glad that Mayor Lucas supports this goal even if many in KC have been dissuaded by the forces of negativity.

  11. ^^^^ I agree with the sausage king. The gopher seems unhinged and doesn't admit that the killing was a real setback and a reality check for all of KC.

  12. “Laws against open drinking weren’t being enforced and the police department was not engaged helping with security.“

I got news for you folks, the police work for the state, not the city. We are the only city in the country that can’t run a police department. Sad.

Rick Usher... David Zagalik I guess we haven’t met. I’ve lived on the Westside for over 20 years.

(Very interesting claim since Usher bought his Westside "home" in 2015 for $85K. Wait for Rick's big flip next)

  15. @7:00pm
The KCPD is "managed" by the Police Board, which is made up of KCMO residents appointed by the governor and includes the KCMO mayor.
They set priorities and provide oversight and direction to the police.
Although, if you've ever met and discussed issues with any of them or attended a Board meeting, you'd quickly see that they are generally the same kinds of uninterested hacks who occupy most of Jackson Count and KCMO government.
And the city council FUNDS the KCPD, which actually gives them considerable influence, if they're interested enough to learn enough about public safety issues to provide any well-informed oversight, which they are NOT.
The notion that anyone in Jeff City micromanages the KCMO police department is just uninformed silliness.
Local electeds need to take the time to inform themselves and then have the guts to assert themselves in the critical issue ofpublic safety.
Public appearances, ribbon-cuttings, and insider deals are sadly more their speed.
    Sad.

  32. People drinking outside had nothing to do with the violence so it's funny how the "get back to art" crowd is so short sighted and relies on Strawman arguments.

Major cities have large public events regularly and the people pretending to be "urban" or whatever show they are just pretenders rooted in the suburbs who went to art school and moved downtown/midtown later in life but kept the backwards mentality. First Fridays being as large as possible is good for this city
