TKC FACT CHECK: KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR LINE CAN'T SUPPORT KALDI & MORE THAN A DOZEN COFFEE SHOPS!!!

Here's a tragic Downtown Kansas City fact gleaned from a developer blog that needs to be put into context . . .

"Kaldi’s Coffee is closing its location at 12th and Main in the KC Power & Light District this Friday . . . A note on the door to patrons reads that it was a “pleasure serving downtown Kansas City the past six years.”

A few insights . . .

This location is at the nexus of the streetcar line. The coffee shop was  flanked by a taxpayer subsidized grocery store, a movie theater and an EPIC party place.

A biz CANNOT expect any more help than this but the coffee shop couldn't cut it. To be fair, they worked banker's hours and prize making a decent and very fancy cup over speed. People in KC need their caffeine fix quickly if nothing else.

What biz will replace it??? Another coffee shop is a nice fit given that this spot is perfect for cowtown poseurs.

Nevertheless . . .

COUNT THIS COFFEE SHOP CLOSURE AS A MAJOR INDICTMENT OF KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR LINE ECONOMIC PROMISES GIVEN THE PRIME LOCATION STILL COULDN'T BOLSTER HIPSTERS SELLING FINELY CRAFTED BEANS!!!

Again, we want to be fair and it's important to note there are no less than a dozen coffee shops that remain within walking distance of the streetcar in addition to the nearly free swill available at most offices. The "coffee scene" in KC isn't percolating, it's nothing more than a glut of overpriced sludge that isn't nearly as good and is far more expensive than gas station fare or a Starbucks trip every now and then.

And so the myth of an economic boom inside the downtown loop persists and the higher taxes are VERY REAL whilst the financial benefits are difficult to quantify and economic incentive hype is now harder to swallow than most upscale hipster barista concoctions. Ewwwww.

Developing . . .

  1. only agree about the banker hours. Closing at 4 pm is not going to work for most places of business. Even in downtown. And yeah, they were slow but that' part of their appeal. They wanted to be more of a sit down place.

I think one of the better and cheaper downtown restaurants should consider moving there.

    1. This isn't the nexus of the stretcar line.

      It's welfare avenue.

You've got P&L, Streetcar and One light.

Face it, Cordish isn't good for Kansas City local business. People MUCH smarter than TKC have been saying as much for years.

  2. where's the best coffee in KC?

In your own home if you aren't a total idiot.

    1. Tried hundreds of varieties--fresh Colombian, Costa Rican, Guatemalan, and Kona have good flavor and fair priced! Volcanic soils grow the best beans!6/26/19, 5:01 PM

Yes, and the best beer and great cocktails, too. Sure, it's fun to occasionally check out the retail and restaurant fare, just for a change, and for some recipes inspiration.

Whole bean, high quality, medium or dark roast, batch processed in the grinder for a French press pot every morning--Perfect! Process a finer grind for the espresso machine most after dinner rests--add rock sugar, whole milk or cream, heated or frothed, and a shot of Irish whiskey--Slainte!

  3. Quay is the best place on the streetcar line. Everyone is just a pretender.

  4. Now now little Tony, I know it's lots of fun to blame the streetcar for all the world's ills and all your shortcomings.

But Kaldi's sucked. Horrible service and bad coffee. They could have been located in a concentration camp and not done any better.

    Now run along and play.

  5. Kaldi’s would be a good location for queers to meet up and suck each other.

  6. The only businesses downtown has been able to rope in have been coffee shops and restaurants...and hotels. Office jobs haven't been pouring in. In fact, DST who used to be one of the city's biggest downtown tenants laid off thousands less than a year ago. Cerner has 15,000 employees here and can't build campuses fast enough but won't even sniff downtown. The poor leadership focused so much on building condos that weren't worried about how downtown will fair 10 years from now when it's taxed into oblivion. We're coming full circle.

Expect the Main Street Morgue to be back by 2030.

  7. To be fair there is a Starbucks across the street, a Scooters in the next door building, and many other coffee options near by

  9. another 30 million tax free is the missing piece!

  10. Agree with most of the comments there that Kaldi was a slow suck house with horrible service and even worse coffee. So yeah, this isn't a big loss for downtown if you don't count the millions and millions of dollars we keep giving to the P&L district every year.

  11. I think some of the really "unsavory" people getting off that streetcar stop chased a lot of the customers away.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually, there is a Starbucks across the street in City Center right by Domino's Pizza.

  13. I only drink coffee made of beans that have passed through monkeys' digestive systems. Kaldi did not carry that brand. That's why it had to close.

  14. I'll bet they are leaving because Kansas City is a dysfunctional nasty city with what Sly did and all. They will probably relocate to a better place in the burbs. The next place?????? Well does anyone think they will last? Doubtful!

  15. ^^^ Maybe or maybe because they just take way to long to serve up a damn latte.

  16. Or.......the rent went up.
