Kansas City Jazz Scene Denied Top Ranking

REALLY GREAT THINK PIECE from this local culture mag about the future of Kansas City jazz and the only thing we have to offer in addition is that KCMO has contributed $100-MILLION to 18th & Vine Jazz District but this town still doesn't have much credibility when it comes to jazz destinations across the country. Never mind all of the turmoil at the Jazz Museum. Here's the artsy lamentation:

See Hear: Do We Have What it Takes to be a City of Jazz? - KC STUDIO

Early this year, "Downbeat" magazine announced a global list of 25 cities where jazz "thrives." Kansas City, alas, failed to make the cut. A friend in New York responded with outrage. Portland? I see her point, but I also understand how our jazz legacy is so often overlooked.

  1. This cowtown doesn't have anybody that can even manage to keep a local internet-jazz station in the broadcast mode for more than a couple months.

  2. No sane person will go to 18Th and Vine due to shootings and many murders there. Kansas City is NOT a jazz city, or even the birthplace. Do not kid yourself. Chicago and NY are the famous Jazz locations. Lets stop pretending. Plus Jazz is unpopular. Its gone the way of the buggy whip and the butter churn. Only old geezers who are not hip are into old time big band jazz trash

  3. Jazz lovers are like the James Buchanan fan club... small in numbers, not likely to grow. You can poor another 100 million into 18th and Vine and it won't change that fact.

  4. Jazz has moved beyond "The KC Be-Bop Sound", but Kansas City hasn't.

  7. It’s fucking jazz man! Lmao who in this city touts jazz as their identifier when they get asked where they are from?

    “Hey man where are you from”?
    “Oh me? Kansas City, the city of jazz, have you heard our jazz”?

    Nobody cares about jazz. I’m not trying to knock it because sure if I was out at a bar and live jazz was going on it wouldn’t bother me a bit. But cmon, trying to act like jazz creates jobs and revenue is silly.

    Kansas City didn’t make the list because it’s Kansas City. How much money has been dumped into 18th and vine? It’s a black hole (no pun intended). It doesn’t create money and people get shot there.

  8. Ever tried to get a table at the Green Lady Louge or Black Dolphin on a weekend? Good luck. They are packed. Although, just like many professional athletes, don't try to get to know the players personally. You will be very disappointed.

  9. Jazz is one of those things you either love or dislike, not alot of in between. 1pm to 3pm on KKFI 90.1 and after 9pm on 91.5 Kansas Public Radio. It lives, just not beyond its means.

  10. While home, I stream soft jazz all the time on Amazon Prime radio. Great listening. 18th & Vine? Nope. Ivy's used to be a decent jazz restaurant North of river. Long gone. Too bad. Phoenix used to play at the casino, no longer.

  11. Lift me, won't you lift me above the old routine;
    Make it nice, play it clean jazzman
    When the jazzman's testifyin' a faithless man believes
    He can sing you into paradise or bring you to your knees
    It's a gospel kind of feelin', a touch of Georgia slide,
    A song of pure revival and a style that's sanctified
    Jazzman take my blues away;
    Make my pain the same as yours with every change you play
    Jazzman, oh jazzman
    When the jazzman's signifyin', and the band is windin' low
    It's the late night side of morning in the darkness of his soul
    He can fill a room with sadness as he fills his horn with tears
    He can cry like a fallen angel when risin' time is near
    Jazzman take my blues away;
    Make my pain the same as yours with every change you play
    Oh lift me, won't you lift me with ev'ry turn around;
    Play it sweetly, take me down, oh jazzman

    KCMO can't make top 25 in Jazz but it makes top 5 in most dangerous and top 10 of most in debt towns. This is the type of momentum KCMO needs.

  14. When I get a hankering for jazz I just pull up Billy Crystal's old Jazzman routine on the you tube. That always hits the spot!

  16. Jazz has been proven to appeal most to people with mental illnesses, autism, personality disorders, and anti-social personalities. Because Jazz does not have a repeated refrain and verses, its free flow unpredictable next notes and "chaos" appeals to these people. Many Jazz greats were gay, drug addicted, or mentally ill. Jazz is yesterday's "Rap Music", only without the violence. Why not study classical music instead? Jazz is for old fat men with bad hearing (from the loud music) and drug addictions
