NEWSFLASH!!! KANSAS CITY CONVENTION HOTEL WILL FAIL AMID TAX BREAK GLUT!!!

On Sunday and to start the week, local MSM is catching up to a not-so-fun-fact that our KICK-ASS blog community talked about last year.

Resolved . . .

SUPRISE SUCKERS!!! THE NEW DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY CONVENTION HOTEL IS A DISASTER IN THE MAKING THANKS TO A MARKET GLUT FUNDED BY CITY HALL!!!

Here's a nicer passage the proves 12th & Oak FAILS at basic biz and doomed a monstrosity of their own creation.

A report revealed that occupancy rates were below the level considered healthy and that occupancy rates are expected to continue declining if demand doesn't increase.

Jason Fulvi, VisitKC's new CEO, spoke last week about the issue at a meeting of the Tax Increment Financing Commission of Kansas City.

"What I'm saying is we have done a great job of developing supply," Fulvi said. "At this point, it might be wise to take a pause, let demand catch up and re-evaluate."

With the biggest addition to the hotel market still to come, Kurt Mayo, executive director of the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Kansas City, told WDAF that "we need to pause and take a breath."

"Let's start selling what we've got. Many of the downtown hotels have reinvested in their properties. We've got the best product we've ever had."

The new $325 million Loews Kansas City Hotel is expected to be completed in the spring of 2020. The convention headquarters hotel will add 800 rooms and 63,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space.

What's worse is that based on nothing more than promises and drawings, KCMO taxpayers fronted more than $35-MILLION to start and then will continued to finance this thing to the tune of about $135-MILLION just because Mike Burke is a "nice guy" and didn't want to run a real campaign against Mayor Sly James.

  5. Seanot, isn't it more of an example of why TIF was turned into a disaster?

If it was being used to reconstruct blighted areas as was intended, it would probably have stemmed some of the decay that surrounds Downtown, but instead it just became a funds transfer from taxpayers pockets to out of State developers, with a hailstorm of "little white envelopes" hitting City Manager's and Politico's desks.

  6. This "transaction", like most of the "development" that depends on subsidies, tax abatement, TIFs, and all the rest of the private/public menu of giveaways, was designed to take care of the proposers and their consultants and attorneys up front.
They've all already done very very well, thanks for asking.
And now the residents of the city are stuck with a huge building in their lives and you can be sure that when it "doesn't meet its financial objectives", they will be the ones who will be identified as the lenders of last resort.
    It never changes.

  14. You idiots who thought this hotel was such a great idea are clueless. First off who would want to come to Kansas City to do a convention? Many towns other than Kansas City offer so many nice things to do other than attend the convention. Why do you think Vegas books so many conventions. KC was ranked 39th in 2017 as a town to go to to hold your convention, St Louis was 29th.

You need weekly good sized conventions coming into town week in and week out to support these hotels. A convention and basketball game here and there isn't going to cut it. This isn't a build it and they will come deal one would have thought the Sprint Center would have taught you that lesson. There is nothing to do downtown but go to bars. And the bars there are are nothing to write home about.

Kansas City isn't a go to town for having fun if you live elsewhere. You're going to one of the other 38 cities that people do want to go to for conventions and vacations.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ^^Ugh. You're so fucking stupid. Get a clue. KC has always had great convention business. Just go to KCCONVENTION.com and you can actually see what's coming you brain dead simp! Serious question here: Did you have an actual brain injury or are you just fucking dumb??

  19. 1:34 and 1:40 you both and I think you're one and the same who couldn't be more wrong.

Dave paints a very accurate picture of the downtown area and the number of conventions being held here. He's very correct in the number of events that need to happen weekly to support the rooms currently available for overnight guests. Kansas City has nothing and has had nothing for a long time to draw in the good large number conventions. In the next 30 days only 3 conventions will be in Kansas City Convention Center 2 of which are very small 4 hour events. A quilters show in May and that will be made up more of local attendees that people coming into Kansas City staying over night.

So no Dave once again rocks and is on point with his facts.

  21. ^^Sorry Dave 1:34 is as you like to say, dead on the money. It's not just three or four events rube. Go back and count them again. You were given the website. Also you should know dummy that KC is excluded from bidding on several of the larger conventions because the lack of available hotel rooms near the convention center. The Lowes Hotel address that need. This isn't new information dummy, KC has needed a downtown convention hotel for decades. I'm sorry you're retarded and can't figure out how to count the number of conventions coming and I'm also sorry you shoot of your mouth without understanding what you're saying every time you post one of these idiotic paragraphs. Maybe go back to school?????

    ReplyDelete
  22. We’re ready for conventions except for one major detail. Conventions will never come here until we upgrade the quality of our whores. Most of the whores we currently have are drug addicted and used up. We need some hot fresh young 18-21 aged sluts.

  23. Over lunch I was alerted to this post and I responded that the sender should refrain from not only reading this blog bus also responding the to comments.

This post isn't just myopic and wrong, it's sinister in the hope that Kansas City won't succeed in our plan to make this city best in all of the nation. The quotes are being misconstrued and interpreted out of context. From the KC Business Journal, Fox 4 and The KC Star, the media has taken the statements out of context and opportunists have spun the words to fit their own agenda. What report shows is that Kansas City has been successful in building our capacity. The report shows that our efforts have paid off and now businesses, residents and merchants are ready to capitalize on the progress if we can keep up this kind of momentum.

To argue otherwise is to ignore all of the incredible achievements our city has to its credit over the past 8 years. We have done so much to build interest and excitement in our city. Already tourism has become one of our biggest industries again and we're on the cusp of making continuing the downtown renaissance.

At the airport we've making the same kind of gains.

And do all that I can ask to the constant critics is simple: What have you done to help our city? The answer from most is likely nothing but complaints and criticism. The readers of this blog have constantly tried to impede the goals our city every step of the way. While they might brag about a few successes, overall voters have decided that they want to continue to build a vibrant downtown, to keep up our streetcar and push forward with the airport.

The only reason I write this is to remind anyone who stumbles on this blog that the negativity does not represent Kansas City. We are proud of our mayor, our new hotel, our streetcar and our upcoming airport. We are making incredible gains and the only complaints are from those who are left behind because they refuse to realize what great opportunities we have created.

  24. @2:08PM Sorry, but Dave is absolutely wrong when he said that there were only three conventions in the next 30 days. There are five in April alone! There are 7 in May, so I have no idea what the fuck you(Stupid dave) are talking about!! I mean this information is right on the fucking website!! I guess you really must be stupid! I just kind of chuckled at all the posts making fun of you, but apparently you are either really dumb, or willingly ignorant. Which is it? Both render everything you post in the future utterly irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 2:14 there are several featured events but check the dates and they are not all conventions that take place in next 30 days as I pointed out. Conventions is what brings in the money not graduation shows and church services. Some of those events listed are for the Music Hall and those are not conventions either. Events attended as I said by local people.

Sorry you lose. If what you say is so true post all these so called conventions you claim are happening.

Go4KC was made aware or alerted as he says. That means those with something to lose are saying, "Get on there and try to dispute what the are saying by any means." Calling Dave stupid all the time is a prime example.

My challenge to Go4KC and the Superdave haters is stop spewing meaningless hateful words and start posting hard core facts to back your verbal purging that always comes across as a whole lot of nothing by a couple of fools too chicken shit to say who they are.

3:19, right on! Taxes being fully and timely paid, and telling the clown car characters of their corruptions help this city. Corporate welfare is too generous. More taxes need to be paid by the crooks and the connected---they know who the scammies are.

More media and the masses need to put the spotlight on KC's dark side. Coverage of city market flowers, cooking segments, and road runs through rich hoods crowds out the not so soft and cozy sides of life here. Although, Fox 4 does some calling out on shady shit more than the rest. Lately, the sinking ship Star, tosses out occasional hints on some dirty dealings--surprise.

  50. Did a bit of research...

Ibuild Showcase April 18 - a one day event for schoolkids 6th-12th grades, all local sponsors all local participants (number of Hotel Rooms needed ?, probably ZERO)

Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference April 23-24 - a regional two-day conference that does draw a few out-of-area participants, the Downtown Marriott has easily accommodated all attendees the last two times it has been held here.

VIP Dance Competition April 26-28 a local (one of 32) dance competition, usually held in such venues as High Schools,
might require a few Hotel rooms, but easily accommodated in places like Wichita, Grand Rapids and Des Moines. Held in the Music Hall, not the Convention Center.

Geekcraft Expo - April 27-28 (note overlap) - a local two day "makers" show, to be held in the Municipal Auditorium, not the Convention Center. Mostly regional exhibitors (hotel rooms needed - any?)

Petfood Forum - April 29-May 01 at last, a real Convention! Per their website, there are 183 attendees and 142 exhibitors (of the promised 350) registered. At last, this will take place in the Convention Center.

I'm not one of Dave's fans, but you fluffies squealing about "knocking him out" need some real evidence!

Maybe a few of the "4vents @2:43 cut and pasted from a KCMO website will draw better, but if all we have to brag about is this sort of petty shit, something's wrong.
