KANSAS CITY 'SAVE THE PASEO' PETITION PUSHES FORWARD BUT IS IT TOO LATE?!?

Local activists have earned NATIONAL ATTENTION for their efforts today.

More than anything else, this group deserves credit for delivering on promises to bring the issue to a vote whilst some members of the local clergy promised the same thing but FAILED to deliver.

The roundup on the situation from local sources:

KMBC: All street signs along The Paseo changed to MLK Boulevard

Northeast News: Save the Paseo Petition officially filed

KCTV5: Group seeks to reverse naming of The Paseo for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

And so this efforts enter City Hall during election season where strange things always seem to befall the electorate and citizen initiative petitions don't always make it on the ballot in the way they where initially devised.

  1. Not too late at all. The council needs to do the right thing and put it on the ballot as is.

  2. I still can’t believe the city spent resources and time on stripping Paseo to rename it MLK. Nobody gives a shit, and everyone knows that MLK roads or schools have crime problems. The very OPPOSITE of what MLK was about.

  3. it's not too late. keep fighting!

  4. ^^^ Totally too late. Council will reject this petition.

    You heard it here first.

    1. They can accept or reject it, it still goes on the ballot. That’s how the initiative Petition works. This is NOT up to Athens City Council now. Save The Paseo is doing this by the letter

  5. ^^^ Wrong, wrong, wrong buddy!

They did the right thing and they want a vote of the people. Nothing wrong with that at all!

  6. Is it too late to force the Mayor and Council to follow the requirements set out in the City Charter (the LAWS they MUST operate under)?

If so, then why bother with elections and Ballot questions?
If the City Government is TOTALLY INDEPENDENT of the citizenry then are supposed to be serving, then they HAVE CEASED TO BE A CITY GOVERNMENT, and have become WARDENS!

  7. @5:40 NAILS It.

I hope the council puts this on the ballot. That's what the charter mandates them to do. But over the years I've seen several petitions ignored. Just look at what's happening in Jefferson City right now. The voters wanted the Clean Missouri bill but Republicans have moved to invalidate it and they aren't enacting any of the legislation that was approved by the majority.

More often over the years, I see those who hold elected office totally ignoring the will of the people.

  8. Racist petition from racist people. The council should ignore it, it's a garbage petition and does not comply with the charter.

Actually, 6:03 did us all a favor because he shows us the argument that's going to be used against the petition. The city should be careful if they go this route and try to go against the charter by using a technicality. They would be much smarter to try and work to develop a something on the ballot that is fair and equitable.

  11. NO FUCK YOU @6:16 YOU RACISTS WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOUR PETITION IS THROWN OUT AND YOU ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR DISGUSTING DISPLAY OF BIGOTRY. COUNT ON IT.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ^^^ Calm down there sparky, you'll get a chance to vote on it. Just hold your water.

  13. Screw you, 6:21. You and your ilk are largely what’s wrong with the country today. Anything that doesn’t go your way and the race card is immediately dealt. Well, here’s a newsflash for you - suck it! People have had enough and the race card is losing its power among the silent majority. The Paseo was once a beautiful part of the city until the coloreds ruined it like they ruin everything. And Paseo is a lot more important to the KC metro than MLK will ever be. And like other posters have stated, anything and everything named for MLK is in the shittiest parts of the cities where they’re located. What a nice tribute to your “hero.”

  14. 6:03 is the perfect example of racism in KC. The Paseo was pushed trough without the people's vote. That was dirty! They are changing history in KC that doesn't need to be changed. They should have named a new street MLK not changed an existing street. Still should have gone to the people for a vote because it's the tax payers money who has to pay the King family every year!!!!!
It's not to late, fight this without ceasing. It was dirty politics and was a racist move especially to Hispanics because of the origin of The Paseo name, why and how it was named!!!

  15. Tell us how mush the royalties are being paid to the greedy King family. Tax funded payments should be public record.

  16. I’ve never understood why any city would name something for him. Besides paying money to his gold digging family, he was hardly a noble character, and only a Dr by a pity vote. Do research and you’ll see that his doctoral dissertation was later found to be plagiarized. Just another typical black pastor grifter.

  17. you all know if they have to put the petition on the ballot there is a Missouri supreme Court ruling the basically state. That they have to put it on the ballot but if it wins city they can challenge it in court. It's Clay Chastain versus the city of Kansas City Missouri. Let's see if they do it to this petition like they've got into the trolley car petition the hotel petition and the airport petition people have a right to petition their government it's in the US Constitution.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ^^^^ That's a fairy tale. They don't have to put it on the ballot because it violates the charter. The petition is not valid.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great work Northeast! I think this is a sign that our city really does care about government and the vote of the people!

    ReplyDelete
  20. ^^^ 9:56 is absolutely incorrect. You don't know how the system works. Clay Chastain proved this is not the case. The Council is not obligated to put an invalid petition on the ballot.

For instance, you get signatures to charge everyone in KC 10,000 for the air they breath. The clerk can certify it, you can petition the court but under our charter the council can dismiss your petition because it is not compliant. It's invalid. Just like this petition.

Wait and see, I'll be laughing when you guys are crying about all the time and money you wasted.

    ReplyDelete
  21. ^^^^ WRONG.

Again, this guy knows nothing about city council. I agree with some of the commenters on here. It is a valid petition and will make it to the ballot. The group followed the rules and they have a major victory on their hands. Good for them!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Only DEMOFUCKS could have changed miles of signs overnight for no reason, while the rest of stupid fucks have to pay for it!! Too bad the only street sign changes get such fast attention and the potholes and streets get less than minimal attention in this douche town!! And I am not racist, I have nothing against MLK, in fact I think all street signs should read - "ya live here? Good luck with that!"

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anyone have an idea of what happens to the old Paseo street signs? Is the city saving them for reuse if the name change is reversed? Are they being destroyed at this very moment? Can they be offered for sale to the public to help cover costs?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Incorrect in Missouri supreme Court clay Chastain case that you must put all petitions on the ballot that's the law. If they don't do this it will be breaking the law. The only resource the city has isn't it when they can challenge it in court.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How does the petition violate the city charter? Be specific.
